Quoted from beelzeboob:Well, thanks for the kind words. I'm a ridiculous Star Wars fan (don't get me started on all the overpriced crap I've bought since Disney took over), and I preordered the LE without seeing it. I went through the typical Pinside trashing when the game came out and, of course, doubted my purchase for about five minutes. But as always, it has turned out to be a great game. It's just that I can probably think of 10 games out of the top 50 on the Pinside list that I think are more worthy of a Top 10 designation. That's not a slight on SW at all.
Here is what it comes down to for me...
Theme: A+ without a peer. Not sure this is even arguable (and I know some people don't like Star Wars, but those are definitely the exceptions not the rule).
Look: Beautiful pin in the home setting that certainly isn't going to be anything other than admired by others and has a wow factor with the rails and mini-LCD screen, etc.
Play: This is where I will fight to the death on why this is a Top 10 pin IMO. It has so many ways to play it that gives a great deal of variety in spite of being a typical fan layout. I also think it is one of the best pins to install a shaker motor as it brings the Tie Fighter "bobblehead" to life, as well as the video mode-- in addition to adding to overall gameplay in more typical ways.
The three main ways to play:
1. You can just play to try to hit the Hyperloop shot and enjoy the heck out of it when you hit it. Then, even after hitting it, you can get even more enjoyment by adding balls before it times out (my personal best is 4 balls going at the same time-- which is absolutely thrilling). This has to be one of the best, if not the best, multi-ball modes in pinball.
2. You can focus on trying to finish all of the modes. Which is rewarding because beating any of the modes is rewarding in of itself, but you can also "just unlock" all of the modes and you get to fight the emperor which is also awesome.
3. You can focus on getting a high score by moving the multiplier. This risk-reward way of playing is VERY unique, and is by far the best integration of a center button in pinball. It is also the reason most who don't like the game don't like it. But there is more to pinball than high scores (see above), but if you really want to get that high score, you're going to have to regularly take your hand (and attention) away from those flipper buttons. Totally different gameplay, and hitting a 40x shot (that you caused to move to the right shot) is awesome!
Given the fact that the shots are smooth and fast (inner loop has to be as fast as pinball gets), it makes every way to play more satisfying.
Conclusion: I can think of other pins I may rather play 1-2 games on, but none of those games have the variety of Star Wars. Do I like games like Medieval Madness, Attack from Mars and even Elvira HOH better than Star Wars? Probably for the first game or two, but not for hours. What about Jurassic Park or AIQ? Those layouts make me jealous every time I see them... until I am on my third game and am sort of sick of hitting the same shots over and over. The genius of Star Wars is that all of the shots are smooth and none of them (other than HS ramp) are necessarily that unique... but hitting them when you have to, without bricking or hitting the wrong shot... that is unbelievably rewarding.
If you think there are 10 games that offer all of what I just said about Star Wars, I'd be surprised.
