No good deed goes unpunished..

Star Trek Premium, noticed that the flasher on Vengeance was not working. As is common there was a black wire broken which I repaired and re-installed. Works great.

Now none of the opto switches seem to be working. I tried the ramps, the Vengeance in the down position and one for the drop target and nothing responds. Unplugged and plugged back in all the node boards, nothing changed. Board on the top left on the underside of the playfield has a flashing yellow led and the other boards are flashing red, is this normal? Due to the optos not working will spit two balls out on game start, thinks there is a ball jam.

The factory manual is borderline useless for troubleshooting. I'm at my wits end here. Went back over my work and everything looks fine, disturbed as little as possible when I was working.

Did the black wire actually go to the spot you put it on ? Or could it have shorted to something else before you fixed it ?

I'd contact Stern tech support for guidance.

Yes I just rejoined the black wire to itself, was a clean break and a known issue from the ship flexing around. Everything on that bundle right there is just led lighting for Vengeance, nothing else.

All the mechanical switches seem to work fine as do the coils and flashers.

Maybe a fuse??

Does each opto circuit have its own dedicated transistor on the driver? Or are they piggybacked?

I would call Stern also. It’s a newer game, and I’ve heard a lot of stories of their node boards crapping out or having issues.

Stern not taking any calls due to covid 19.

E-mailed Stern, will keep you posted.

Can anyone verify on their modern Stern that board flashing yellow is normal or not? I'll try and get a part number or description.

FIXED!

Flipping through the schematics I determined that the board in question was related to the lighting and more than likely not my problem so started looking at the optical boards. Noted that they listed power and grounds and so broke out the meter and at the optical boards had no power.

5 volts was present at the I/O board so started looking further downstream. Found a single broken black wire at the bottom of the cabinet which turned out to be the ground path for the optical boards. Little solder and heat shrink and all is well.

Near as I can figure, when the playfield was in the service up position a loop of wiring was sticking up and the playfield snagged it when I was putting it back in place and neatly cut it in two.

Whew.
