Quoted from The_Dude_Abides:I don't think this pin will play anything like STTNG at all. Just because there are a few same shot locations does not mean this is a replica and will play similarly. That stuff gets blown out of proportion most of the time IMO. Almost after every pin is released this is a response from someone and most of the time after people play it they see that they don't play anything alike and the comparison ends there. IMO this game will play much more like SM than STTNG.
I feel the same way, which is no surprise as our opinions usually match up. But even though it's similar to existing pins, I do feel that, like Tron, this game is going to be all about the experience of playing it. I think the light show will play a huge part in the immersion factor here, hopefully.
And even with a similar ramp layout to STTNG and SM to a lesser extent, ST will flow way better, I think. No one pushes the fact that the warp ramp circles back around to feed the orbit back to the upper flipper, not feeding back around the the right ramp. The VUK is also going to fire the pinball directly up into and through the warp shot, which means the VUK feeds the upper flipper. This is going to create some awesome loop shot combos a'la DW or Shadow, but possibly a bit faster than both of those. Might be a really bitching' shot to hit successively.
Of course my final judgement will be reserved for when I play it, but looking at the how these shots seem to interact with one another just makes me think it's going to feel different, even with the similar layout.
By the way, I've gone on record with my opinion that Tron's playfield is art is pretty boring and bad, and the shots are fairly straightforward. Were we to be just seeing that playfield only nowadays, we'd probably be lambasting it as well. But the code, sound and lightshow integration are what makes Tron an exceptional game and a winner. All those factors that make Tron tick can't be measured in playfield shots or a quick veiled cosmetic teaser video. I hope, for Stern's sake, that the gameplay videos and quick tutorial/features video from Steve will really make things come together.
