I am a big fan of the original Spider-Man and regretted not purchasing one when they first came out.
Recently I purchased a new Spider-Man Vault Edition. Like the original, it's a great game and I appreciate the art, upgrades and LEDs. I've written my likes and dislikes, compared to SM on other forum threads.
One of my main complaints is the call outs on the new VE. All call outs appear to be done by the same voice actor. The recorded quality is better on the VE but the original SM had better variety, including the J.K. Simmons recordings for the game (the voice clips on the original SM were undersampled, most likely to save memory).
I miss the JKS call outs and the enthusiastic "Wooo-hooo" of Tobey Maguire on the ramps and wanted to see if it was possible to modify or replace the callouts on the SMVE.
I pulled the code off of the SMVE (https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/backing-up-settingsscores-to-usb-stern-sam-machines#post-3111799) and compared it to the last revision of SM on Stern's site using OGA83's great Pinball-Browser software.
SM contains 593 sounds (music, movie clips, voices, sounds, etc.) and SMVE has 1637.
The SM ramp call outs numbered 6 (http://www.wanderwheels.com/pinside/smve_remix/request109SM.m4a) compared to 12 on the SMVE (http://www.wanderwheels.com/pinside/smve_remix/request118SMVE.m4a).
Unfortunately, the really great "wooo-hooo"s on the SM were much longer than any of the call outs on the SMVE and couldn't be mapped over directly without running through some audio software to shorten them. I ended up with a mashup of SM and SMVE (some weren't so bad, others were too short to modify a SM call out) for the ramp call outs (http://www.wanderwheels.com/pinside/smve_remix/mashupSMVE.m4a).
I imported the modified SM audio files into the SMVE code and loaded it to my SMVE as a proof of concept (Note: this will clear any high scores you may have). For a first pass, it worked. I'll probably go back and tweak the audio from SM and start adding JK Simmons callouts to the code of SMVE - "Eight Arms? He should be playing this game!".

Yes, my flipper skills are only marginally better than my ability to roll balls up a ramp.
