I have absolutely zero evidence to back this up, but something just doesn't *feel* right about this move.

Adobe uses the subscription model, and there are communities out there actively pushing back on purpose with open source software that does the same thing. This is a bit different though because Stern isn't the only player around town anymore and you can't make pinball machines for free. Point is, piss off the customers and they'll go elsewhere. It'll be interesting to see where people start taking their money when they get pissed enough.

Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:Valve used to make games. Now they admitted that they only have about a dozen people or less working on these updates. They require extremely low overhead but bring in huge amounts of cash.
Soo... no Half Life 3?
Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:We will probably see less pinball machine releases and longer working lifespans as they milk them for every drop.
Thought about this for a minute and I think it all depends on how well this takes off with the operators. If they push back or don't buy it'll be interesting to see how deep this goes. An interesting move for them to hire this guy before the pilot program has really even shown any indications of success. Seems a bit soon to me.
Also, the Half Life 3 thing sucks.
