Man, I was really hoping for another mini game for Jurassic Park but doesn’t look like that will happen.

Escape Nublar is super fun and it would have been cool to see a multiball challenge much like ghostbusters.

#1561 4 years ago

I was hoping to get Game of Thrones update. Can't use tournament button. If you turn game off it deletes the setting for the tournament you set.

Hope that the Black Knight one (SDCC edition or not) will be listed at a cheaper price.

Engineering Update:

Stern continuously looks to improve our systems and features available to our customers. Moving forward, all Stern games will include the unique system adjustment TARGET_GAME_TIME. The TARGET_GAME_TIME standard adjustment is only accessible when the BALL_SAVE_TIME adjustment is enabled. TARGET_GAME_TIME enables a multi-use ball saver, whose duration is dynamically calculated for each ball to help ensure the player has a guaranteed amount of play time per game. The TARGET_GAME_TIME adjustment has a range of 1m 30s to 3m 00s and defaults to NO_TARGET_TIME (disabled). When disabled a traditional single-use BALL_SAVE_TIME ball saver will be used for each ball in play. When TARGET_GAME_TIME is enabled the first ball of play will have a multi-use ball saver of BALL_SAVE_TIME seconds. The second ball will have a multi-use ball saver which is 25% of the (TARGET_GAME_TIME – player_game_time). The third and beyond will have a multi-use ball saver which is 50% of (TARGET_GAME_TIME – player_game_time).

The multi ball saver will be pretty cool for route games to keep new players interested!

No. Example: game is set to 3 mins.

If player 1 plays for 1 min on balls 1 and 2 (total of 2 mins) and player 2 plays for 5 mins total. Player 1 will get extra ball saver time to reach the 3 min goal while player 3 will not get extra ball saver time on ball 3 as they surpassed the min game time.

So it's the old min game time but under an new and more confusing name?

#1578 3 years ago

It sounds like the same idea, but implemented through the service menu instead of user controlled selection. I think it was called NOVICE before?
I remember it with few sega games. I think it will help location pinball so newbies get some more play time for their coin.

Quoted from Joe_Blasi:

#1579 3 years ago

This is smart. On location play is too quick on a fast machine for some of my friends. If they knew they would get at least “x”amount of time to play I think they would play more.

It could also be a way to increase play cost without losing novice players. If game play cost raises to $1.50 a play or 3 plays for $3 on newer machines many new players might only play once. Yet with a healthy ball save dynamic, they might feel like they are getting more out of their money and keep dropping more coins.

Games had both is the past.

Its close to that, except the time is front loaded on ball 1 and then drops depending on “player time” after “target time”

So if it’s set to 3 min, then you get 180 seconds on your first ball. The amount of time a player plays beyond that is subtracted from 3min and divided by 4.

Player 1 plays for 4 min total on ball 1, then they will get an additional ball save on ball 2 of 30seconds. (180 seconds-60seconds)/4

Then ball 3 takes the ”player time” and subtracts it from the “target time” and divided by 2.

Player 1 plays ball 2 for 1min (30seconds of player time)

On ball 3 player 1 will have had 90seconds of “player time” so they will have a ball save for an additional 45 seconds. (180 seconds - 90 seconds)/2

That’s all assuming the timer is set at the maximum of 3min. If it’s set at the minimum of 90seconds the time decreases dramatically.

If the same player plays 1min of player time on ball 1 then they will only have 7.5seconds on ball 2 (90seconds- 60 seconds)/4
If they then play the same 30 seconds of player time on ball 2, they will have 0 seconds on ball 3. (90seconds-90seconds)/2

#1582 3 years ago

Interesting and it adds up but how does the player know how much time he has? Is there some indicator, some timer? I like the concept though for sure.

Maybe a countdown will be shown on the screen?
Hopefully there’s some way of telling the player what’s happening. I can imagine someone who has never played pinball before draining over and over on ball 1. The game just keeps giving their ball back, so they keep playing, and then they play player 2s ball because they don’t realize it’s over.

#1584 3 years ago

That gives me the idea that it would be nice to be able to set this up for 1 player in a group. Kind of like bumper bowling.

My daughter would definitely play more if there was a way to make the game more even. If she could get a timer and I don’t, that would be really cool.

The idea of this setting is to prevent novice players from feeling ripped off but not make the game too easy for expert players. So based on your ball time of ball one the ball save is dynamically calculated for ball 2 & 3. If you had a less than stellar ball 1 then your ball save is boosted not only in duration but number of saves. If you had a great ball one then your ball save works as normal balls 2 & 3.

Unlike guaranteed ball time settings of past games this will prevent having a good game and only getting to play one ball. It also does not guarantee you will hit the minimum game time but will help you reach it.

This setting is disabled during competition.

#1587 3 years ago

I like this. I think it will be great for casuals and no one feels ripped off. For better players they won't even notice.

#1588 3 years ago
Quoted from sk8ball:

There where 2 ways of guaranteed game time in the past. and the non player choice one let you play an full 3/5 ball game.

Also buy in's give you an unlimited number of saves for XX time on a lot of the games with buy in's Even if main ball saver off. (some have an buy in ball save time setting)

I just want to know one thing. Did Josh scream "Not Like This" when he first heard the concept of extra ball saves as we know how much he cherishes a ball save.

Pretty cool feature. Only question I have, it states "moving forward, all Stern Games....". Do you know if this coding will be added to existing games that get a code update? I assume it wouldn't be added to games that are considered complete and not going to get another update but was curious if the newer games may see it added to a future update (Like Elvira, JP2, Stranger Things, Etc). My kids love Iron Maiden and Deadpool. Still waiting on my JP2 but I know they will love it too. Their games often times are less than 3 mins so it would be AWESOME to be able to set it to allow for longer games for them.

#1590 3 years ago

I believe these are associated with the Stern TARGET_GAME_TIME feature.

Will this stand up in court under prior art? If stern trys to be an patent bully / troll?

#1592 3 years ago

Why would Stern need a patent for this feature? It could be reproduced and called something else, it's just a formula.

#1593 3 years ago
Quoted from luvthatapex2:

Why would Stern need a patent for this feature? It could be reproduced and called something else, it's just a formula.

In a number of industries these days, the philosophy is "If it even <i>might</i> qualify for a patent, apply for the patent. Even if we have no intention of enforcing the patent, even if it gets thrown out later, it'll still prevent <i>someone else</i> from patenting it and using that patent against us."

And there's quite a history of patents in pinball. In my opinion, one of the biggest competitive advantages that Bally/Williams had over Data East during the peak of their rivalry was that Bally/Williams machines could automatically compensate for switch failure and Data East machines legally couldn't. That made a big difference in perceived reliability, and probably led to some of the uninteresting one-ramp-that-awards-everything-eventually Data East rulesets.

sega games did kind of the same

#1596 3 years ago

GTB Waterworld does that. I think it minimal adjustments for time.

#1597 3 years ago

Kinda nice when you are playing someone that either doesn't know the game or isn't really into pinball.

#1598 3 years ago

Gottlieb DMDs have multiple ways to do this... there is a minimum time per ball, and a minimum time per game. This has been done before. Nothing new. You could also set them where you could BUY IN for more time too...

#1599 3 years ago

Last time I read the prosecution on this patent it had had to be neutered in such a way that something must physically block a drain on order to be patentable making it mostly useless. That was some months ago, but that's my recollection.

Anyone notice that this month's "Stern of the Union Brewery" is a place that's been out of business for years and I believe (based on memory when I talked to someone on the staff when they opened) prided themselves on not having modern Sterns?
