Got the new board today but did not fix issue.
Background info -
Node board #9 is slow blinking yellow (48 volt is red and 6 volt LED is green)
Node board #9a is not lit up at all
Node board #8 is fast blinking (like it should)
---- Board exchange
Installed new board today
Set dip switch #3 to "on"
Installed
Rebooted game
Node 9 not found (same error as before)
--- Cable swaps
Replaced cable (with one I had) from backbox source to Node #9 - gets same error
Replaced cable (with one I had) from Node #8 to Node #9 - gets same error
--- Board swaps
Swapped the old (original in game) Node #9 board to the position of Node #8 - set dip switch #3 to "off"
Left the new Node #9 board that Stern sent me in the Node #9 position
Booted game and based on the above, that new Stern Node #9 board was now getting it's RJ45 data from the old Node #9 board ... gets me the same error (number 9 node not found)
---
Talked to Pablo at Stern and he suggested I pull all the connectors to node 9 except the RJ45 comms cable
Did that and node 9 booted fine, then I added one connector at a time until it wouldn't boot again - it was connector at CN12 (orange)
I pulled every pin out of that connector housing and then placed each back in then booting the game
The very last (black) wire was the culprit
Chased that wired to a 2 pin disconnect just at the edge of the backbox
Disconnected the 2 pin connector and node 9 worked great
Turns out that connector led to the inside of the T-Rex head
Pulled the entire head assembly, popped off the jaw and barely touched the red wire on the jaw opto board and it wiggled and quickly just fell off
It had been loose for sure but I was wondering how that could have had caused a short
Check out that tiny hole in the opto board just to the left of the positive solder pad
That hole is actually grounded on the board
If you touch the brown wire at the connector lead in and touch that hole you get continuity
Not a big deal except that Stern soldered the positive (red) wire right on that side of the solder pad and once that wire shifted, it grounded on that hole
I re-soldered the red wire more in the center of the pad and put a tiny piece of electrical tape over that hole
Game plays like a champ now!
4 hours of chasing ghosts ...
