I've been looking for this game for a few years, and found one a few days ago. Playfield is hammered, but Neo says he can fix'er up. I know these pf's will be reproduced sometime, but I'm not that patient.

I love peeling stencils.
Red goes on tomorrow.

That looks great.. Is there a trick to knowing what the base color should be..could you have done blue first?

#9 3 years ago

I paint in the order that Pimp tells me.
But the base color on these early ss are always what is on the inside of cabinet as well.

#10 3 years ago

Thanks Erik, I'm ready to check out that Panthera any day now...

#11 3 years ago

Just waiting on the boards and it should be good. Maybe another week or so.

Looking good. Couple small areas to touch up, but NBD.
Colors turned out sweet, I can share paint codes if anyone needs them. I use custom mixed auto paint, and it's not cheap.
I'll put 3 or 4 coats of clear on tomorrow to protect this.

I can't be sure from one photo -- but so far, I like the blue you chose.

It appears to be a shade darker than the dominant playfield light blue, and a bit less red and dark as the ominous blue in the BG, but perhaps matches the plastics and apron quite well. Makes sense, to be pick something between the extremes of 4+ different blues on that overall composition -- no easy decision to make. (Meanwhile it has to balance with the orange as well...)

Thx.
If anyone is able to get a scan of a good 9ball pf, please contact me. I just need the typical worn out area around the balls/wizard.

#19 3 years ago

googled: site:pinside.com "nine ball" "playfield scan"

first hit:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/anyone-got-or-can-get-a-scan-of-nine-ball-playfield#post-3690754

He had that one restored by HSA so the keylines are a hair thicker than normal, but great result.

#20 3 years ago

I sent that earlier to playfield restorer, but it doesn't quite go far enough.
And that poster no longer has machine.
I appreciate your effort. Thx.

Got the coin door decals from Pinball Rescue. They get the blue foil around the credit button right.

Nice: I really hate the earlier repos that weren't shiny/foil. I will pick some up from Pinball Rescue for sure!

#25 3 years ago

AND $34 for shipping up to 500grams due to Covid, so I will live with my crusty/missing credit stickers for a while..

#26 3 years ago

They sell Stern apron and spinner decals as well.

#27 3 years ago

Great work! I never should have sold mine, though it was necessary at the time. If I can ever find another... this is one of my top ten all timers. Definitely worth the work you are putting into it.

#28 3 years ago

Thank you. I appreciate that.
I cant wait to rearrange my bsmt to put together my 1980/81 wall.
I have one wall that will fit 7 machines.
I'll have these 4

Original displays were junk. Going with these led units from pinballsolutions.eu.
Sold as a "solder yourself" type kit for around $150 plus ship, these are a nice option.

They have a brightness adjuster, so u can match them to existing displays if using alongside originals.

Drop targets are bit of a pain to clean and refinish, but the results are well worth it.

Nothing like a clean working bank of drop targets.

That is going to be an excellent line up when you're finished.

#42 3 years ago

Thanks
My early solid state wall of machines are the ones I'm most proud of. It's been alot of work, but all worth it.
Nine Ball will fit in nicely.
And if the stars align, I'll be squeezing in a Stargazer.

Time to attack the beast.
Classic Stern mechs had the worst plating of the time. Gets this powdery oxidation, then corrosion everywhere.
I take them completely apart, wire wheel them clean, and apply paint.

Looks great.
No interest in light boards? Any opportunity to get rid of those fucking big metal nightmares I take it.
Interesting painting the metal.

#50 3 years ago

Definitely interested in light boards, are they still available?
And yeah, painting the frames is a good way to freshen up.
Just clean all that oxidized crap off.
It doesn't take much time with wire wheel.
