got one, and even if i'm not a basketball fan, i really enjoy the pin (lets assume its also because HGTT was one of my favorite when i was young)

what you guys, especially from USA (land of basketball), think about it ?
seems that pin is really underated here in Belgium (Europe)

just a first "good" point : as its an easy pin, my wife play it !!! (and she didnt play TRON... much harder & faster)

you thought ?

#2 9 years ago

I like it and want one. They are hard to find in the states.

I played one at the PHOF in Vegas a few years back and I was pleasantly surprised, it was a nice change of pace. I'm also not a basketball fan and didn't expect much considering the quality of the pinball releases coming out at the time of NBA. They're hard to find and I recall reading somewhere a few months back that only 300-400 were made. Not sure if that's true, but if it is, you really do have a collector's piece.

#4 9 years ago

huh !?

well, very hard (who said impossible ?) to know how much were done, but yes i read that already
even if it seems a very small run !? btw, when you said "hard to find in the USA", is it because people keep them home (loving basketball), or the fact is due to this possible small run... ???

i've also read that the "standard" NBA is a kind of "LE" version, and the later run made for China is to be taken as the "light" version (no spindisk, missing the transversal ramp, no up/down MVP targets)...

ok than, lets wait for more feedback

They are hard to find because it was a small run, no one bought one and the game is widely considered one of the two worst modern Stern pinball machines of all time along with IJ4.

#6 9 years ago

I personally hate that machine.

#7 9 years ago

and than, we have opposite feeling, finally that's a good thing we all not love the same pins

even if i think NBA is really underated, especially if you try it just few games with no aim
its a very open playfield, and yes, game is quite simple and easy, except SUPER STAR mission, and than its very hard to play the NBA FINALS (wizard mode)

all friends who came home have that first negative feeling about NBA
and all enjoy the game & were happy to play it when they leave the garage...

#8 9 years ago

I love basektball, hate the NBA, but like the game.

I usually play it twice a month on route.

#9 9 years ago

huh....never heard or seen it till this thread.

#10 9 years ago

There is one at the Pinball Cafe here in Toronto. I think it is a decent game though that spinner can really tick you off lol.

#11 9 years ago

The machine at TPC Toronto was the prize won by Sean O'Neill for winning the Canadian National Pinball Championship in 2009. He has donated it's use to the cafe owners with all revenue going toward the legal fund for granting the cafe an arcade permit. A valiant gesture. Now to find a liberal lawyer who will do something for the few hours time the machine will earn.

At Expo 2010 I saw a few Chinese models for export.

The game is hard IMHO, with short ball times.

#12 9 years ago

Never played it nor Fastbreak.

#13 9 years ago

I think it's a great game! Hope to own it one day. The only problem with sports themes in particular is they really date themselves after a while.

Regardless, I like it.. I'll never get tired of that jump shot. I have a feeling though those of us who enjoy the game are in the minority.

Yah it is a fun game I like to play it at the Cafe not too sure why it is so unliked is it the theme or that there isn't too much going on in the game? I don't know but I do know it is fun and annoying at the same time.

#15 9 years ago

"there isn't too much going on in the game?"

well, if you only shoot for the basketball, yep, it's poor
but if you try to finish the game (to NBA FINALS), its another story

what to say about the spindisk !? there in the middle, sure it can drain balls or save some others, thats as it (btw, this can be set up for working with bumpers and/or slingshot, or even cut while unplug...)

i like it working with the bumpers

I liked playing Stern NBA when they had one in the Goodge Street arcade in London during 2009. I haven't seen or played one since. I imagine that there can only be a handful here in the UK. That jump shot up from the playfield into the hoop is simply amazing. I prefer this game over NBA Fastbreak.

#17 9 years ago

I have looked at it before and didn't see anything I would like better in this game then the other.
I like the bally/midway NBA fastbreak.

#18 9 years ago

The PHOF in Las Vegas has a satellite location at the Riveria Casino. It has both an NBA Fast-break and Stern NBA. Its nice to play both and have a comparison. I like the little basket on the NBA. Its a bit of a one trick pony, but the trick is pretty cool!

I would have easily picked Striker Extreme or NFL to put in Modern Stern Worst Game category before IJ4.

another afternoon playing home with friends, and guess who was the (surprising !?) funniest pin of the day ?

NBA of course, no luck for TRON & Airbone

Those two are too old. By modern, I meant more recent Stern.

It's a cool game but most people haven't played it cuz they only made about 300 or so. The free-throw trick is awesome. I great physical pinball "magic trick" ...but not immediately obvious since the shot looks like a typical saucer. When it launches the ball diagonally & it sticks to the backboard magnet and lands in the net, it's a definite "WHOA, COOL!" moment!

Like most, I had zero hopes for this being a decent game since it's a sports theme, a re-theme of Space Jam and from Stern's "Cheap Years" ...I went to L.A.'s now defunct C.A. Robinson and they had NBA & 24 set up. I was more interested in 24, actually ...but ended up HATING that game and playing a ton of NBA instead! Go figure!

#24 8 years ago

Awful game, just dreadful. NBA Fastbreak is better.

#25 8 years ago

That game is not good.

#26 8 years ago

I actually enjoy Stern NBA - fun just shoot the ball around type of game and I like the modes in the game - difficult enough to get to the finals and ball times are not long. Good game in a collection if you are a sports fan - also gotta love the NBA jam announcer in the game - I agree not for everyone but friends and non-pinheads really enjoy it and we always have fun playing it.

Just curious...have you guys played it? More than once? Nothing wrong with not liking it, but I'd like to see some constructive criticism and reasons for why people don't like games. Just blurting out "it sucks" doesn't tell me much about your experience with the game.

#28 8 years ago
Quoted from Rarehero:

The free-throw trick IS awesome and the shots are decent enough, though unimaginative (typical fan layout, with target banks on both sides of the playfield). The theme and sound are downers for me on this one and they re-used the IJ4 ramp "box-thingy"...it is what it is. I don't see myself buying this ever, but if I see one in the wild I'll pump a few more bucks into it.

#29 8 years ago

Love the game. Wish I still had mine. Biggest mistake was for me to sell it towards getting an acdc premium.

#30 8 years ago

I like it a lot. Little longer ball times than I prefer but fun. I would take this over a super hero pin anytime.

Yes, I've put quite a few games on it. Repetitive. Unimaginative. Standard setup of standup targets on each side. It actually feels like a system 11 game to me, without the imagination. IMO of course....

Fair enough. Seems like the pushback against the Stern "System 11' Style has actually transitioned into acceptance, with the love of IM, Tron, and the short-ball-time style.

nobody has mentioned seeing it on the Dan Patrick show/??? wow, no sports fans here i guess. i like the game..much more so than my space jam (same layout). i'd trade up in a heartbeat..with cash along.

congrats!!! i would like to have a nice one someday.

Nope...unless you count pinball.

I've seen it on Patrick's show. I also like the game and have played it quite a bit.

I would love a great sports themed game, but superheroes, science fiction and geriatric rockers seem to be the big draw here.

Me too Balls....I'm thinking not a lot of sports freaks amongst the pin nerd crowd...

Of course, I am both!

#37 8 years ago
Quoted from JoinTheCirqus:

Yes, I've put quite a few games on it. Repetitive.

i think that's the problem...
"few games" is surelly not enough to check the 6 main missions, and even not the 6 secondary ones !

in that case, i can understand people not love it
BUT, if you gave this pin a chance to be played & mastered (as it as to be, to finish it, and not to only shot balls with no aim in mind), than its another story for sure

btw, lovers or haters, peace all, cause again, its a good thing we doesnt all like the same few pins...

#38 8 years ago

i owned the game and had it on location at my shop and it outearned stones , spiderman , addams , transformers and 24 by a large margin . very short ball times and the kids in my shop loved the title

NBA is horrible. I am a huge NBA fan. Great for noobs though. I think it has the easiest shots to make in all of pinball. NBAFB is much better, that's not saying much though.

I think Stern NBA is a great game.. would love to own one some day.

#42 8 years ago

I remember one in a small restaurant here in St George, UT called Frost stop or something like that. Never played it, just remember it standing out because I'm a b-ball fan. That must have been 15 years ago.. Next time I go by there I will have to see if they still have it or even want to sell it.

I just picked up an NBA and was hoping someone here might have a new spinner disc decal for sale? Mine's worn.

An extra spinner disc decal anyone?

Unobtanium. But give a howl if you stumble on to some. I am sure most NBA owners would be interested in getting a spare or two. Me included
