Racking my brain on this problem. Turning to the forum for thoughts. Hopefully someone has been through this

Problem: Stern NASCAR has been playing without issue for many years. Turned it on and the DMD is displaying garbage (see pics). Game will start and play without issue but the DMD stays garbage.

Troubleshooting To date:
- Swaped displays. Same thing happens with a different DMD
- Checked voltages on Display Power Board. All good.
- Absolutely no acid damage. Game was HUO and clean as a whistle.
- Reseated and checked all ribbon cables. Swapped ribbon cables. Same thing occurs.
- No visual issue on the display controller board.

I don’t have another stern to try swapping the display controller. The 5v to the display driver is good.

Thoughts?

Dave

Quoted from Dpb128:

Absolutely no acid damage. Game was HUO and clean as a whistle.

Did you take out the batteries and look to see there is no corrosion there or anywhere in that area or on the Rom legs.Corrosion sometimes hides behind the battery holder.

Did you check the display voltage? They are generated by a small board in the upper left corner of the backbox. There should be -120vdc, -108vdc (12 volt difference, ), and +65vdc...

What were your measurements??

Yup. Removed the batteries and the holder (cut the zip tie). Not a trace of acid.

Voltages are as follows:
-110v
-97v
5v
67v

By what I see from the attached, the voltages are close to “nominal”

Yes,That should fine...Next would be the DMD controller board, mounted on the back side of the dot matrix display panel. It has it’s own 68b09 processor and ROM, and runs on +5 volts. If the +5 is missing or bad connector at the board then display won't work or start acting up.

Dave,I see in your first post that you swapped displays and ribbon cables and the measurements are good coming from the small board in the backbox.
1.Both DMD displays not working and both ribbon cables not working is highly unlikely.
2.Measurements from the board is good

I'm guessing,Just taking a shot in the dark...I would suspect the connector that goes to the DMD controller board on the back of the display panel might be bad.Look into that and see if it is burnt/bad/faulty ect.See if it measures +5V

The other thing would be is a bad RAM or a bad 68b09 processor I know you swapped displays but did you use the same controller board on the back of display?

5v is good to the Display Controller Board. Checked voltage at connector on board 4.95v and 5v led illuminated on Display controller board.

When I swapped the DMD I only swapped the display and used the old display controller board as this is my only stern so no other game with a similar board. The DMDs and ribbon cables I could use from my Williams.

I also checked both the 26 pin ribbon and the smaller one by swapping with no change.

Just trying to get a second opinion before I order a new display controller board. Also, I see they are $220 at Marco for a stern board but looks like Ks sells a rottendog version for $140. Anyone had any experiences with this rottendog Board?

I have a few laying around tested 100% working. If you want a original board I can sell you one for 160.00 shipped.
