Nothing magical about this list, but this was even more lopsided that I would have thought. Most of the non-TV/Movie/Band machines are pretty old. If you remove machines made on or before 2002, there are only two titles that have absolutely nothing to do with TV shows, movies or bands: Big Buck Hunter and Mustang.

    Title with absolutely no TV/Movie/Band relationship (9 - 19%):
    1999 Harley-Davidson
    2000 Striker Xtreme
    2000 Sharkey's Shootout
    2001 High Roller Casino
    2001 Monopoly
    2002 Playboy
    2002 RollerCoaster Tycoon
    2010 Big Buck Hunter Pro
    2014 Mustang

Titles with indirect or some TV/Movie/Band relationship (7 - 15%):
    2001 NFL
    2005 NASCAR
    2005 Grand Prix
    2006 World Poker Tour
    2007 Dale Jr.
    2009 NBA
    2012 X-Men
    2015 Wrestlemania

    Titles that are purely TV/Movie/Band licenses (31 - 66%):
    2001 Austin Powers
    2003 The Simpsons Pinball Party
2003 Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
2003 The Lord of the Rings
    2004 Elvis Gold
2004 Ripley's Believe It or Not!
    2004 Elvis
    2005 The Sopranos
    2006 Pirates of the Caribbean
    2007 Family Guy
    2007 Spider-Man
    2007 Wheel Of Fortune
    2008 Shrek
    2008 Indiana Jones
    2008 Batman
    2008 CSI
    2009 24
    2010 Batman
    2010 Iron Man
    2010 James Cameron’s Avatar
    2011 Disney TRON Legacy
    2011 The Rolling Stones
    2011 Transformers
    2012 AC/DC
    2012 Metallica
    2012 The Avengers
    2012 Transformers The Pin
    2013 Star Trek
    2014 The Walking Dead
    2015 KISS

You missed South Park and KISS.

Grand Prix is purely TV/Movie/Band? I thought it was an unlicensed version of Nascar for the European market.

    Playboy has the Playboy channels.
And any mainstream sport is going to have some kind of TV coverage. Doesn't mean it is TV show related.

Those are some pretty lame themes pre-2003. Seems like that year was a turning point. Thankfully.

I wouldn't lump X-Men in with TV/Movie. It's licensed off the comic. There are films and TV shows off the comic too, but they all come from the same source.

As opposed to Walking Dead, which is based on the comic, but the pin is taken from the show, not the original source.

And the last Stern pinball game without a licensed theme was way back in 2001.

    Quoted from Aurich:

Me neither. However, I put it into the "movie related" category because it's hard to ignore the fact that the title was made in the middle of a highly successful movie series, which is probably how most people have come to know X-men. If all the movies had flopped and not generated several sequels, I'm willing to bet that Stern would not have considered the X-men franchise.

It seems that some level of TV or movie success is needed for Stern to get interested in a license. In any case, this is all just for fun.

    No! This is serious business!

Yeah but that's still just a general term. Stern didn't use a license for their Grand Prix pinball machine, did they?

    #12 8 years ago

No they didn't. F1 licensing is one of the most guarded and expensive trademarks on the planet. I have not seen any Formula 1 marks on the machine and Bernie Ecclestone, who ran f1 for the past 30 years, would have crushed stern if they even got close to f1 imaging.

    Isn't nascar racing for dummies?

It's racing for people who can't turn right. Like Derek Zoolander, but in reverse.

I'd say South Park was Sega not Stern.

And out of the whole list, Striker, Sharkey's and High Roller are the only unlicensed, Stern original pins? Unless I am missing others. Where are the off the wall, original thought, out there wacky pins of yesterday.

Junkyard, Diner, Fish Tales and High Speed for just a few.

Gary has said quite often they aren't going to do non-licensed titles, so I'm not expecting to see anything original thought titles from Stern. And I'm not counting WNBJM because it's not really a Stern game (and its' also a licensed title).
