Also got my digi ket order in and replaced all the molex metal inserts on the harnesses. That was a good few hour job

#102 5 years ago

Got my paint issue sorted. As noted by another the wicked line is not as opaque. I started painting the play field again with the new paint. Never actually done painting quite like this as I’m more of a plastic model guy.

So what material do you use for masking? I can see that it looks to be yellow-colored. Are you cutting the material by hand (like frisket) or do you use a cutting machine?

#107 5 years ago

Using both methods for cutting. I got the material from maple airbrush. Stuff works awesome.

I’m almost to the point to do something to cover the natural wood areas. I’m still not sure what direction to go there or just leave the damaged wood showing.

#109 5 years ago

I still think some sort of black onyx over all would look neat so the damaged areas slightly show thru as darker lines / cracks.

#110 5 years ago

Laying down the mint now.

Had to sneak a pic with the current state of the play field in the cabinet.

Obviously it's your decision, but I would keep the wood tones as such. You might regret later on that you painted them black. A thin, transparent layer of wood tone is what I would do, just to refresh the areas, whilst making sure to keep the wood-structure visible. But then again: it's your game, you decide

#114 5 years ago

It is a hard call to make. I like the exposed wood but not a fan of actually applying beige to simulate a wood colour theme. If i could achieve something like this i think It would look neat.

I did not realize the playfield had so many bright colors. A dark gray shooting lane may be what you need to create a beautiful contrast. Or matte black as a last resort.

Yves

#116 5 years ago

Picked up some transparent medium grey today. That might be perfect to still let the wood grain thru.

#117 5 years ago

Bought myself a Circut Explorer air 2 yesterday. I wish I had one when I started painting the playfield. Being able to cut the paint masks now is so much better than having to do the blade knife thing.

Hey, my wife has one, but I have no idea where to start. I can use Photoshop and CAD software, like Microstation and a little AutoCAD, but no idea how to take a scan of a playfield area and turn it into a vector file, scaled for that machine. Is there a good tutorial or guide for this? Thanks.

#119 5 years ago

Im old school. My whole life i have been in cad drafting. I just hand survey the playfield and redraw it all.

#120 5 years ago

Think the blue colour match is ok. Had to lay a larger section down to test. It was hard with small test boards.

Great thread! How are you doing the paint splatter on the cab?

#122 5 years ago

I bought a $2 heavy plastic bristle brushes and dipped it into a can of Tremclad. I used my fingers and just pulled back on the bristles and get them them flick the paint on as they snapped back into position.

Wow.. Harbor Freight has those for cheap and sometimes on sale..

Thanks for your reply wolffcub Since posting the question earlier I've been practicing various techniques brushes etc on everything I could lay my hands on (including a dishwasher door) and I'd come to the conclusion that a similar brush to yours was the way forward. Once I saw your post, flick, flick, flick and my resto cabinet is now speckled! Your reply boosted my confidence to go for it

#125 5 years ago

Another easy way to do it is take the same brush and cut down lots of the bristles only leaving a few long. Have a tray with only about 1/32 of a layer of wet paint in the bottom. Dab the brush straight down and then just tap the brash to your work surface with out actually stroking the brush. It leaves a perfect dot like pattern that is more of a speckle and not a splatter.

#126 5 years ago

This is awesome work! I just read through all of your thread and am looking forward to seeing this when it's done!

A+ job mate!

2 layer test of the transparent grey. I like it.

Well done so far

#130 5 years ago

Its great to see a classic stern getting this type of love. I have restored many of them. They deserve love too!!!

#131 5 years ago

My line method. Lay a strip of 1/16” tape.
F7A1B771-940B-48E1-A4D6-3E0675FE8046 (resized).jpegF7A1B771-940B-48E1-A4D6-3E0675FE8046 (resized).jpeg

Trim ends off by gently pressing the blade down while it’s level. You will hear it pop thru the tape and it won’t dig into the wood.

7C9EB92B-00B5-40A1-8698-B439ACCD6E28 (resized).jpeg7C9EB92B-00B5-40A1-8698-B439ACCD6E28 (resized).jpeg

Cover tape lines with the masking and use toothpick to help define and press down the mask around the line tape edges.

Cut the inside and out edges of the line tape and peel out line tape. Apply black and voila it’s closer to being finished !

few boards need to come back off to install some new caps but it is nice and safe when it’s no longer in cardboard boxes.

Damn you have some serious talent.

#136 5 years ago

Holy hell, that's progressing nicely!

I thought you were batshit crazy at first, and assumed you had no idea what you were getting into. Obviously you're just extremely talented!

Was there any particular reason you picked Lectronamo to do? I have one and love it, but it's not a sought-after game generally

#137 5 years ago

I just jumped into this pinball thing. Always wanted one so I got one then a week after owning one I thought a good way to learn more about them is to actually get elbow deep into one.

When I bought the Bally blackjack I was only looking for 2 things. A working machine and something older. I like simplicity of the play field and the laid back characteristics of the game.

The purchase of the Lectronamo was easy for me because I like to do things that are not commonly done. I saw the machine in person, muttered “holly shit this thing is in bad shape” and then started to get all excited over it. A quick google on my phone about it actually being not desired because if it’s horrible sounds and not so fun play field sold me on it right away, and also you have to admit that back glass just screams late / early 80’s and that is totally cool.

I don’t have the intention to rebuild and flip but if I see another possible project I might need to sell to make room. I would like to attend next years edmonton pinball expo with it and might stick a for sale sign on it then.

I’m the guy who goes across the gain and won’t follow. I don’t do different things to get the attention but rather do them to prove to myself they can be done. My truck is a good example. 52 chev truck with a 55 in-line 6. I’m all about the early inlines while others toss them to the scrap pile. I devote endless time to improve things and that’s how I get my high. Ever seen a old inline give some other guys grief on the roads ? This is what causes that lol

I’m really enjoying the pinball learning curve and I’m looking forward to working on the play field mechanics but this painting is taking longer than I expected. I hear you have to let the 2pac paint cure for weeks prior to sanding / polishing. I’m going to pull my hair out waiting.

#138 5 years ago

Also this has been a great project for my 9 year old daughter. She is like a sponge when it comes to learning about electronic and mechanical related things.

#139 5 years ago

It's been great watching your work progress. Very, very impressed thus far. Keep up the good work! Hopefully you will bring this machine to YegPin 2019. I know I am looking forward to trying it out as I've never played Lectronamo. Those old Sterns are awesome and need to be shared!

Careful with spraying (and sanding) 2PAC! Not near enough warnings on Pinside with regard to how toxic this stuff is. Lots on isocyanates, guaranteed to cause health problems - Try to make sure all your skin is covered up (tyvek suit with hood, rubber gloves, and a full mask respirator with supplied air).

Do Edmonton pinball people gather other times of the year or meet up here and there ?

They have a monthly tournament and various other tournaments throughout the year.

The DHPL is on a short summer break.. next league night is Sep20 at Lucky’s Lounge. Sign up to sub or come visit.
There’s also the annual Yegpin event.. set for April 2019
Pinheads can also be found at the Denizen hall, the provincial pub and the Beercade.

Great rebuild thread wolffcub!

And you may also be interested in the Vancouver Flipout pinball expo. Sep 7-9. Lots of Alberta folks will be attending.

#149 5 years ago

Oh NO!!!! A System 1.... Forget anything you know or learnt about Bally/Stern machines.
They are quite different. The System 1 is a lot simpler in a way, with just enough control for 8 coils.

Yves

#150 5 years ago

I need to stuff it in a corner so i can get back to my Lectronamo. Just one question about the SYSTEM 1. What kind of pins are in the connectors and where can I get the tool to take them out to install new ones.
