is there a chance these are wired in series? 4 ohm + 4 ohm in series = 8 ohm... probably not?

Two 4 ohm speakers wired in parallel would be a 2 ohm load.

Running 4 ohm speakers wired in parallel at 8ohms would be overdriving - more prone to clipping at higher volumes.
