Good thing no one's dropped any custom code in the last week given Stern's landed up with 1.01 today. I jumped into the other project's custom audio two days ago just after it's release and have played one game since doing so prior to today's new code. Looking forward to the results of this project though .

#160 4 years ago

Now that's custom audio! I can't wait for it. Although, I hope as you say we can downgrade the code to 1.00 from 1.01. I get the feeling it is possible though, I feel like I've done some like that in past.

Keep up the great work Tim!

Quoted from Manny65:

Changing to 230V isn't the issue but the newer Sterns have hertz freq protection so a US machine (60Hz) won't work here (50Hz), I believe you need replace one of the internal boards ... but most people probably wouldn't want to risk buying a machine, shipping it over to then try and get it to work.

There are some guys on Gumtree parallel importing them. There's a guy in Sydney who's been flipping machines for years who's selling NIB Sterns. I don't know what the story is as I've never bothered contacting him about. He must have some method though.

#247 3 years ago
Quoted from Eagle14:

I had 1.01 installed on my LE and then installed the custom rom and it worked fine, so in theory you could install 1.01 and then the custom rom and be fine.

Same here. Already had 1.01 and downgraded the other day with the custom 1.00 image.

#254 3 years ago

I had no dramas at all Tim going from 1.01. Restored my setting and everything was hunky dory. Looking forward to having a decent play shortly finally as I've been a bit busy.

Quoted from imagamejunky:

Have any of you guys tried the Stern topper with the 1.0 code?

This post could provide a clue. If the topper actually an integrated update (or unlocks something existing), perhaps there's hope it will work with 1.0 anyway.

Quoted from timlah79:

I hope that no one is honoring requests like this. Sharing my code is against what people agreed to in the disclaimer. Sharing custom code made from PinBrowser in general is also no longer allowed per its developer. I will lose my PB license if this happens. Once I can get all the macros and sound script locations in order for 1.01, there will be an option to "patch" my code changes. For now there is no option. Please do not try work around these requirements. Please be patient for now.

Been reading about it on the PinBrowser thread. Kinda sad it's all gone this way now. People like you and especially guys like Cleland who have done so much for the community now can't share their work, pretty much defeating the purpose of being able to mod the code. I can't see the average owner taking the time to do sound and video modification. I did it once for GB cause I wanted Bobby Brown in the mix, but apart from that never use it.

Some advice for those who encounter dramas with Etcher like I have on 2 separate really good PC's and in past attempts to use it to burn RAW files. Win32DiskImager works a treat and is also totally straightforward to use. Worked first go for me as compared to several attempts with Etcher and Rufus.

#578 3 years ago

Lol I literally just got the last version burnt on Monday. Sounds like a Saturday quick project . Awesome stuff Tim, you are the man! Ironically, I used the example of your audio to school some regional pinball guy I know on a local private FB group, who was going on about how he didn't rate JP, especially 'the annoying call outs'. Told him most modern Stern audio is entirely replaceable citing your example as the best of the best in that regard.

Hahah our_man_in_oz ! That's hilarious. Feel free to tag my artist profile if you want. I'd love to see this discussion (and I won't chime in unnecessarily of course). https://www.facebook.com/timstilesmusic

I ended up doing up the new version yesterday afternoon, all of a 15 min turnaround and away we went again.

Yeah actually I'll edit that post to tag you for sure. You should chime in definitely man. I find this guy a tad over-opinionated for someone who doesn't really go to any effort to stay informed about recent pins but is in some kind of local bush pinball club/league. He comes across very much like a FB keyboard warrior than a well informed forum member.

#594 3 years ago

So awesome, can't wait to see Delt31 videos! Perfect timing here, mid Saturday. I'll go and get the SD now and flash it

#599 3 years ago

Up and running and I absolutely love the video! Integrates so well and makes the whole presentation look so much more polished .

Quoted from MikeS:

Thanks. I used Etcher but will give win32img a try instead and report back tomorrow.

Absolutely use Win32DiskImager, Etcher is by far the most unreliable piece of image writing software I've ever used.

Quoted from Eagle14:

Hi Tim, This new file doesnt work, sends machine in to a reboot loop.

Works perfectly for me. I just did it 20 mins ago man. You should wait a tick for other feedback before you complain about the actual file having issues. Was it on an SD known to previously work -if time so, time to burn it again, preferably with Win32DiskImager.

#603 3 years ago
Quoted from Eagle14:

ok, thanks, I was the 2nd person to report an issue so yeah...

First person we can straight away interpret, had software writing issue due using Etcher. I was pretty much on it an hour after Tim posted the update. I reported back within two hours with confirmation the update worked. Sometimes pays to spend a little trying to troubleshoot first up. In a lot of cases it will allow time for others give a go and report back, especially depending on time of day which may influence how quickly it and widely the software gets tried out.

I had a good 20 mins of playing today and found the whole experience brilliant . Really makes the stock software feel dreary as all get out.

#622 3 years ago
Quoted from bobzilladev:

Mac Balena Etcher didn't work, went into reboot loop, but using command line 'dd' did. This is dangerous if you don't specify the right device, so beware and be careful. Basically following:
https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/installation/installing-images/mac.md

I was about to say after the reported Mac successes that perhaps that's Etcher's one reliable platform. Quite possibly it's not after all. If I operated my PC more on it's Hackintosh drive than I do at the moment, I might have had a look at Mac writers out of curiosity. But I haven't booted up now for quite a few weeks.

#636 3 years ago
Quoted from adamross:

That didn’t seem to work, no idea why this may way for some but not for me. Gonna have to track down someone with a windows pc, I’m in a Mac world here.

That's probably why, aside for no real reason to and missing too much on the PC side, I rarely worry about operating on the Mac side of my 'Hackintosh PC'. I like the IOS account integration for some things, but other than that, I don't find myself really compelled to stay in the MacOS environment for long.

As has also been said, you want to ensure the SD card being used is known to work and not causing the issue itself. But then again, I'm more suspecting the Mac scenario as Tim points out. I'm sure you'll get a resolution soon with Tim on the case

#641 3 years ago
Quoted from timlah79:

Given all of the latest above, this video edited version is going to be an "at your own risk" share (for now) for anyone who pings me for it. I'll share it with you but it has too many issues that I can't resolve. I've spent my entire holiday weekend troubleshooting people's issues (mostly Mac users) with both flashing successfully and it ending up in the game doing a restarting game loop or them having flashing errors in general. I didn't create this video version (it was created from my latest working audio-only version) and it blows my mind that delt31 was even able to create it. These type of problems have NEVER occurred with ANY of my audio-only edited versions and I can't do much more troubleshooting A) There is something innately "corrupt" with this version (even if it is working for you and I), B) B/c there are already bugs with PB and video import that I can't even overcome on my own PC and C) I have a Mac but not a SD card writer on it so I can't even help there either.
I really can't keep helping troubleshoot when there's are innate bugs with PB video import, Balena Etcher software, corrupting resulting firmware and SD cards. I feel the PB dev needs to address at this point. I have a full time job beyond this and as much as I want to keep helping people get this latest video edited version up on their machine, I'm also losing my sanity a bit.
So, in summary if you have issues flashing and/or playing this latest video edited version, please ping the PB dev's thread. The more information you can provide to him, the better we'll be able to create stable versions in the future: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/acdc-display-and-modify-dot-matrix-images
I still have the latest audio only versions for all PREM/LE and PRO models so ping me if you want those. Thanks for understanding and I'm sorry.

Totally with you there Tim. Like much stuff in the software modding community from Pinballs to Intel Motherboards (something I'm currently doing!), it all comes with the 'at your own risk' disclaimer. Sorry it's caused you so much grief after all your good work from people wanting to be spoon-fed solutions to particular platform based, media based, etc issues.

#704 3 years ago
Quoted from timlah79:

For the T-Rex MB issues: I have not had any restarts or anything like that on my LE. However, while playing last night I noticed something I thought was different from a previous iteration delt31 sent me OR it's always been this way and I'm trippin': The "chomp chomp" the t-rex head lines up with the movie scene but then the "roar" comes a couple seconds after the actual t-rex head roars/opens his mouth (consistently). I'm wondering if that's related. i.e. perhaps the clip in there is too long tripping the game up sometimes as it tries to transition to another video. Just a suspicion and I pinged delt about that. Does anyone else notice the off-timing I described?

Sorry Tim, I've been busy last few days but yes I also noticed that too. I didn't think much of it as I didn't want to complain given the excellence of what you guys have done.

Quoted from timlah79:

Ack I shared a beta link again, sorry. I just fixed that. You need to PM "robin" to request access. I think the beta features are going to be fully live soon BTW. Cool notifications feature and probably more included that I don't know about.

Ok no worries. In all honestly, unless I want to race to sort it tonight or tomorrow, I'll probably not be playing much next few days. So if the beta feats are going live soon it prob won't matter much to me

Just out of interest, this is the Lexar 8gb SD I used which has worked well so far.

I finally did the update to latest version while doing install of Pinwoofer system yesterday. I played probably about 10 games afterwards, everything working flawlessly. T-Rex video and sound syncs properly etc. Absolutely no faults to be had across many modes I checked out.

Quoted from timlah79:

Started messing with end ball / bonus video options the other day. It's a commonly looked at sequence that I feel needs some love. Just when I told myself I'd stick to audio only.. Gah!
LMK what you guys think. This short end ball video consists of 3 in game videos that I had to meticulously time together with 5 movie clips.

Looks excellent Tim!

Also repeat my earlier comments on zero issues since very early on with Tim's initial releases with this very easily store bought Lexar SD card, no ordering in etc etc (literally from a corner store).

I actually was going to warn someone on the JP owners thread who was pointed here by one of the other owners to be sure and organise access via Tim only. I will now make a habit of saying that if I see any mentions of the custom code anywhere else.

Thx!

I posted a pic of mine a few pages back. Lexar Platinum II , widely available.

Actually it’s covered in the instructions thx. That’s what I get for skimming instead of reading

My post was just to point out a well tested (since first code release) readily available SD Card that you can likely buy locally instead of having to order one in from the likes of Amazon.

Quoted from snaroff:

Hey Tim,
Amazing work.
fyi...I was able to get this to work from my Mac (version 10.15.7) using balenaEtcher (version 1.5.76).
I tried using the Terminal commands described in the link above and failed (with the following command).
SteveNaiMac1514:Downloads snaroff$ sudo dd if=jurassic_park_le-1_03_0_39TS_D31_ORIG_END.raw of=/dev/rdisk2; sync
Password:
dd: /dev/rdisk2: Device not configured
345677+0 records in
345676+0 records out
176986112 bytes transferred in 2355.966774 secs (75122 bytes/sec)
Is there any reason you aren't advising people use balenaEtcher? Why do you say it's a "gamble" in the link above? Worked great for me.
Thanks again for your efforts on this!

Probably because the majority of PC based users like myself have found Balena to be totally flaky on the PC side vs Win32DiskImager. Seems some have found it similarly problematic on the Mac side. Personally, I've not tested it on either my wife's iMac or the 'Hackintosh' side of my PC for comparison as once it's done on the PC there's no need.

Quoted from pb456:

Asking for some advice....
The Pro JP I have could benefit from a better sound game.
I'm expecting to have to add a sub, an amplifier and probably upgraded upper speakers.
I do not want to hear about 'add pinsound' as it's overkill imo. I don't want a plug and play solution. Solutions are typically just high-cost reasons for not doing it right.
Is there a comb filter/amplifier/sub that someone has done themselves?
Share if you would, and thank you in advance.

I added Pinsound to my Premium, far from overkill. Sound can be dialed in perfectly now. But yeah wrong thread just ask in the owners thread if you haven't already.

Added over 3 years ago:

Misinterpreted OP's post, was thinking PinWoofer's GT Spike 2 kit which is what I did with my JP2. Pinsound is totally N/A for this purpose.....

#1547 3 years ago
Quoted from pb456:

Thought it might be ok because of all the added sounds but yeah probably no Pinstadium for me.

Quoted from PeterG:

Is pinsound possible on Spike 2?

Misinterpretation on my part. PinWoofer is what I meant to say originally and perhaps what the OP was more thinking as Pinsound is 100% redundant on current Sterns. The PinWoofer kit works a treat with the Custom Audio.

Quoted from WeLookedLike:

Please check your messages on the other forum that starts with the letter "a," I am in a rush to reach you because I am up against the clock to make a decision very quickly. I tried to PM you here but it won't let me. Just read the most recent one from username that starts with "Te" because the prior are mostly more outdated repeats of the same info.

Could you be any more cryptic given what you quoted? Are you trying to say you're struggling with a decision to buy JP2 on the basis of Tim's custom audio and want to have a discussion? What's the concern with actually mentioning the name of another forum here btw? The only one I know with an is AA(Aussie Arcade).

Quoted from PoMC:

Can’t recall all off the top of my head. But it has a more Blues Brothers music vibe, fun and energetic. I didn’t like the widely available custom audio because it relied on the movie soundtrack, which was awful.

Interesting, your thoughts on the GB movie's soundtracks. Really shows where our tastes very much clash. I guess it's a bit like my hate for the death metal replacement as much as the original on the BKSOR sound track. The GB 1 sound track is vanilla 80's yawn, I'll def agree there. Don't need any of those track on the game. GB II soundtrack is super cool for me though and takes me back, Bobby Brown, Doug E Fresh, Run DMC, New Edition. I definitely need the movie tracks on mine and not a total replacement alt selection to both movies.

#1588 3 years ago
Quoted from PoMC:

Yup, our tastes certainly clash if you enjoy that soundtrack on a pinball machine.

Yep 100% there. Then again I do also own a share in a record label that does, House, Funk, Boogie, Yacht Rock etc and just started a sub label for Hip Hop so probably not that surprising...

Quoted from PinPickle:

Alright...
After what I have been reading on this thread, I'm definitely computer illiterate in comparison.
I had issues downloading the zip file because I had a safe setting in safari setup. Anyways, got the zip file downloaded but I can't expand the file and get at the raw file.
I have never used terminal on my Mac in my life and the thought of formatting a wrong drive or something else like that frightens me but I'm willing to give anything a shot (with the right instruction).
Are there any other programs other than finder that may be able to open this file?
Thanks for your help. [quoted image]

Find or borrow a Windows PC/Laptop/Tablet if you haven't worked with terminal at all. I'm PC based and I've worked with terminal because I run a dual boot PC/Mac system. WinRar or Unarchiver works fine for all compressed Mac files. You could attempt to try to write the file to SD card with Etcher, however it's extremely hit and miss, which is why I suggest just getting ahold of a PC to do it(Win32 Disk Imager) if you're unsure re Terminal etc.

Well 1.05 code is now officially here to break our custom code. I personally can't see any real benefit but see they're trying to entice people into Insider Connect bs by introducing the exclusive 'Goat Mania' mode. Guess 1.03 is where we'll be staying from here out, unless 1.05 is still modifiable, which I guess right now we don't know.

Use 2 SD Cards... One with official code, one with the custom code. Personally, I'd consider never installing IC on my JP if the custom code doesn't get updated... It's that good.

Yeah same. I've got IC on my new GZ LE and feel no urge to spend the money to add it to JP after using it for a bit. I also run 2 SD Cards, which is best practice really.

With the current state of insider connect you’re not really missing out on much. But i’d bet it’ll be a must have feature in the next year or two.

Yeah so far with GZ the only machine I've got IC on, I'm not seeing anything compelling me to convert any of my older compatible games. As it is I barely remember to pick up my phone and connect it or don't even have my phone in the room.

IMAC user.
Downloaded
Click on the file but, it will not UNZIP for anything. so I can use belenaetcher 1.5.76 to flash
Anyone know how to get this unzipped on a mac. I have looked back and using terminal kinda scares me. lol When he says "Brick your mac" lol

Infinitely easier if you can just access a PC somewhere somehow for it. Win32DiskImager works so much better than either Mac or PC version of BalenaEtcher, which is so flakey. Terminal isn't all that bad in a cut and paste way. I've had to do a lot of bits and pieces on my PC 'Hackintoshs' in Terminal over the years.
