Was playing my MET last night and after about 15 mins I started to smell the patented hot coil smell. Turned the game off and started searching (thinking it was the sparky coil as that is common). Turns out my left flipper coil was super hot. I checked the EOS switches and it was slightly out of adjustment so I adjusted it, let the game cool and then gave it another go. After a couple mins it started to heat up again. In neither game did I cradled a ball on the left flipper for more than a couple of seconds. No fuses blew and the game plays perfectly with the exception of that flipper being spongy/weak.

Doing some research I see a lot of people talking about adjusting the EOS but also stating that the EOS doesn't really do anything on Stern games. Any thoughts on what may be wrong that I need to fix?

Quoted from zacaj:

On games with software controlled flippers the eos is usually just there to detect if something hits the bat while it's held up. The software automatically switches to low power after a set delay.
Is the eos on Metallica normally open or normally closed?

It is normally closed. I regapped it to have about an 1/8 of an inch gap when fully opened (was to tight at about 1/16). No change in performance though on it heating up.

Quoted from DCFAN:

Disconnect the coil and check the resistance.

Will do. Any concerns that it could be a board issue? I had heard about it used to be common on Sterns to have resistors go out but it seemed like that would kill the flipper or pop fuses, of which neither happens on my game.

Both coils are reading 4.5 when removed from the game.

Time to lose my man card... found the problem. Apparently when I changed sleeves and coil stops my GI wire got pinched under the coil stop. Enough for some wire to stick through. Moved that and taped it up. Played for an hour and no more hot coil. Forgot I even did that as I hadn't played the game yet since shopping it out a couple weeks ago.

Thanks for the help.
