Welcome to pinball. Any 15-year old as-is game from a bankruptcy sale is probably gonna need quite a bit of work to "get right."

Probably because stern quality is inferior and you are doomed to have a forever broken game!
Or maybe the start button is broken? Try testing it could be as simple as that.
Have you done a switch test yet and seen if the start button is working?
You seem to be making this more complicated than it needs to be.
Also your playfield is acting normal when you slide it back in. You have to lift back or pushing down on the apron works sometimes too.
Anybody who has fixed up a Firepower shouldn’t be having so much trouble with basic troubleshooting on this. It should be way easier!
