I have a Stern Spiderman and I would like to upgrade the speakers without having to buy a kit from FF or PP. The back box speakers are 4" 8ohm speakers. I haven't been able to find any replacements that are 8ohm. Has anyone found some good replacements for the back box speakers on the Sterns? The cabinet speaker is no problem because it's a 8" 4ohm subwoofer. I am considering a Power Accoustik RW1-8 ebay.com link: itm
or a Powerbass XL84 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007BPQZ2Y/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3
subwoofer as a replacement for the cabinet. I will also be using a L-pad to balance the volume between the back box and cabinet speakers. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think your woofer is a poor choice. It's not very efficient. The internal amps are only 18 watts so you need something efficient. Look for something 93-96db. The woofer will need a 5 -6 mH inductor to cross over. The woofer you choose also sucks because it will be sitting on wood and the rubber around the cone protrude out. Mcm electronics sells some decent efficient speakers. They had a 10" series there that was 96db at 4 ohm. I bought 20. Parts express sells the inductors. Get the cheapest 5mH you can find.

For backbox, I suggest 4" clarion coax 4 ohm wired in series. You'll want to dim the backbox anyway so an 8 ohm load in the backbox is ok. Amazon sells the clarions. They're efficient and sound decent. Although for spiderman, the stock backbox are fine in my opinion. I'd just do the sub.

markmon,
Thanks for the reply. I will admit I don't know a lot about speakers. I understand the higher the efficiency the better. And I realize the amp is only 18 watts so that is limiting as well. I figured a decent speaker would probably sound better than the stock one, but I could be wrong. I have considered just changing the cabinet speaker and leaving the back box stock if I cant find any good back box speakers. As for the rubber around the speaker hitting the wood, that isn't a problem. I have access to a CNC router so I can make any size spacer that I will need. I know I need a 4 ohm subwoofer, and the stock size is 8" but I guess I could go up to a 10" I would just have to cut the cabinet hole bigger. Suggestions on specific speakers is welcome.

You can go 10" and leave the cabinet hole as is. Mcm electroncs sold a 4 ohm 10" 96db efficient speaker. I think it was the 1525 series. The rubber cone of it wouldn't hit the wood so you wouldn't need any CNC spacers. As for any speaker sounding better, if you don't have the power to drive it, a high quality speaker will not sound good. Many hq speakers are extremely in efficient but can take massive amounts of power. These would not be a good choice for you here.

#5 9 years ago

Markmon, I checked Mcm and I didn't see a 1525 series or any 4 ohm speakers rated at 96db. I could have missed them or maybe they changed them. The most effecient 4 ohm speakers I found was this 10" rated at 95db http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/MCM-AUDIO-SELECT-55-3211-/55-3211 and this 8" rated at 92db (+or- 3db). http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/MCM-AUDIO-SELECT-55-3210-/55-3210 I believe they are the same series of speaker. How do you think these would work? I would like to find a 8" that is more effecient and with a lower Khz rating but I haven't been able to find anything better yet.

As for the back box speakers, for now I have decided to just upgrade the cabinet subwoofer and see how it sounds. I have not been able to find any 8 ohm 4" speakers. Stern uses 2 x 8ohm speakers wired in parallel which yield a 4ohm load for the amp. I have figured out that 2 ohm 4" speakers would work if wired in series. 2 x 2ohm speakers wired in series will also yield a 4ohm load for the amp. I was able to find some speakers that should work great but they run about $50 a pair. I found this set of infinity speakers http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MPH3QM/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl
and this set of JBL speakers http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003KN2TDK/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl
If anyone finds any cheaper options please post a link.

Efficiency is super important. (and remember the manufacturer's posted specs are often WAY exaggerated.)

Install an inefficient speaker and you won't have enough watts to hear it over backbox speakers.

You would have to double the amp watts to deliver only an additional 3db.

Or 4x the amp watts to gain 6db.

So you can see that it's much easier to put in more efficient speakers than it is to add bigger amplifiers.

#8 9 years ago

Grab that 10" you posted. That should do well. You'll take out the stern 8" and tap out the 4 studs then use some 3/4" screws and center it over the hole. Wire a 6mH inductor in line with the +. You could probably get away with no lpad and use some resistors. Perhaps even rewiring your backbox to be in series would be enough to dampen it. But if not a 10 or 20ohm resistor inline might do it. Parts express sells resistors and inductors.

Good advice in this thread.

I find that efficient, 4" 4-ohm coax speakers on Amazon for $20 work just fine in the backbox, but you will need to employ that CNC to cut yourself some spacers. Either that or I kind of recall hearing that Terry was going to start running them in plastic and sell them, just don't quote me on that.

I get 2 Ohm audio grade resistors from Parts express and use that to up the resistance back to 4 Ohms when I wire them in parallel. If memory serves, the OEM ones are 8 Ohm and in parallel they go to 4 Ohms so it's a wash. I haven't bought a kit from FF in a while but his early Stern kits were set up like I do mine, except the provided LPad varied the resistance instead, and so I would always put a meter on it and mark where 4 Ohm and higher was on the dial so I wouldn't strain the puny little amp.

I do know this - markmon has given some good advice is this area over the years so follow his instructions and you'll profit.

Good luck.

I ordered the 10" from MCM Electronics http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/MCM-AUDIO-SELECT-55-3211-/55-3211 Hopefully it will be here some time this week. I will keep you posted on the progress. I really hope this makes a difference in the sound of the game. Thanks guys for all the help!

#12 9 years ago

I was getting ready to order the inductor. I was going to order a 5.0mH 18 awg i-core inductor or do I need the 6.0mH you listed? I am also ordering either an 8ohm Lpad ($5.55) or a 20ohm resistor ($.79) for the back box, to balance the volume. I am leaning more toward the Lpad so I will have some adjustment. I am assuming the Lpad will work fine on the Sterns?

I got my speakers from MCM. They look good and have a huge magnet on it. I hope they sound good. I will post some pictures of my mounting plate as soon as I get it cut on the CNC.

Good idea to make a mounting plate. I wouldn't recommend putting any additional holes in the bottom of the cabinet.

#15 9 years ago

I got the mounting plate cut out, the dimensions are 12" x 12" x .750 I still have to install the speaker mounting studs from the other side.

Mount plate finished. I installed the factory speaker bolts and painted it black.

That's sexy! Great job man, but the real question is how does she sound?!

#18 9 years ago

I'm still waiting on my cross over and resistors. I will post more pics of the install and let you know how it sounds once I get it hooked up.

#19 9 years ago

The 6mh will cross things over a bit lower than the 5. Either will work.

#20 9 years ago

those MCM paper cone cloth surround units are GREAT bang for the buck. 4 8's in my livingroom, couple of their 12's low pass filtered in cabs being driven by a warmed up Lepai 2020A+ amp (now 13 honest watts instead of 8.3).
your soundboard wont have the power to really push that 10, which really wont matter, you'll feel it plenty.

Is a spacer really needed for this specific woofer?

Still not got the crossover? I'd love to see this finished.

I got the crossover, but I haven't had time to install everything yet. I hope to get to it before the end of the year. SM is not at my house but on location about 20 miles from me. I plan to bring it home soon and install the speaker and crossover. I will update as soon as I get to. Sorry for the delay on the project.

I dont doubt that MCM 10 one bit, give it maybe a week or so to break in and loosen up too btw, the surround and spider might be a little stiff at first. hook it up to a stereo and feed it 25-30w a few hours oughtta loosen it up nice enough too. she's gonna BOOM even though not being fed anywhere near power capacity.

#27 9 years ago

nice. a few had questions about it being 4 ohm speakers, not much an issue when you can pick up a couple 2-4 ohm 20w resistors to put in series to them, or larger value if the backbox speakers are too in your face loud. adjustable with L-pad can be nicer but good balance with just resistance is doable.

I finally got my 10" sub-woofer installed in SM last night. I attached my speaker panel I made and then routered out the opening in the bottom of the cabinet. I got the speaker hooked up with the crossover, but I didn't have time to install the L-pad on the back box speakers. I will hopefully get that done next week. I can already tell a difference in the sound, definitely more base. I think it is going to sound great once I can adjust the volume level of the back box speakers.

Hey all, looking to do some DIY sound/speaker upgrade to my Deadpool Pro.
I have this stuff “laying around” due to buying a few of these when I was upgrading a Fish Tales a couple years ago. One question is, is it smart to buy a small amp to power the sub and wire it in the cab?
Something like this? It just isn’t efficient for my to buy expensive pin woofer and the like kits

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0071HZ5EQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_EoOYFbFK511XW

Will this be a decent upgrade for bass to start with here?
I have a sub, crossover, pot that I can wire all in to my DP.

Old thread but good. Will this 10 inch sub work on modern Spike 2 systems? Looking for simple cabinet speaker upgrade for GZ pro. I'm not ready to drop 350 on pinwoofer yet.

I'm sure it will, but go here for all your needs....
