This is not a "good deal".
Do people realize over 10-30% (category dependent) of all KS funded projects completely fail?
The baseline average is 9% across all categories of projects.
Those that do happen often are massive disappointments (rewards or objectives changes), or are grossly late in production by years?

I don't hate anything here in this concept, just the method of creation.

They only said they pledge to have the book DONE by the end of this year...not that anyone would have a physical copy in their hands by then. If/when the book is finally "done" (as in editing, photos, layout, commentary, etc. are complete and finalized) they could still take forever to finally get it printed and shipped out to all the backers. No one is getting anything before the end of this year.
No read carefully, is says the end of the year, not end of this year.
