Between Stern's paid disappointing expo party, the recent PR disasters of PF problems, blocking people from FB, Price controls on what a distributor can sell a product for, and general lack of caring and dishonesty, I.E. no changes to PF manufacturing have happened... I think the timing of this book is terrible. We all know Stern, this is gonna be a fluff piece and any hardships mentioned will show Stern as the "victim". I don't see Gary apologizing for anything ever.

Giving Stern $55 for this book just feeds their ego that we will all buy ANYTHING
    they stamp their logo on.

Joseph I think you messed up big time letting Stern have any content control as this could have been an interesting behind the scenes book about Stern, the good, the bad, the ugly, but no way that happens with Stern's lockdown machine with the editing pen.

I hope the book features some Stern customer testimonials from the below thread and article

    https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/ive-been-a-long-time-stern-pinball-fan-but-im-done-with-them#post-3429417

Btw JoeDP if you didn't think asking a question on Stern's FB page leads to a ban you need to research the company you are working with much much more, and especially since you are giving them creative and editorial control.

Agreed, no need to fund a Stern PR book. This whole campaign is a joke.

    #216 7 years ago

Can't believe 270 people fell for this crap, wow you guys will buy anything.

Stern beats customers like an abusive husband and you women keep going back to him...to now buy a promo book written by them. What's next paying to attend a Stern party where they celebrate themselves

    Quoted from GotAQuestion:

Yeah I can agree there. Stern is far from perfect in their behavior and does a lot I disagree with (banning people for asking honest questions particularly), I just don't like seeing the hate directed at PaperFlock because people assume Stern is the publisher or author.

Wrong, essentially Joe has stated Stern has full editorial control, so yes essentially Stern is the author, and we all know how Stern operates when they have control...

If this book was 100% controlled by Paperflock then I would have no criticisms about the book, about using Kickstarter, about the price, about the viewpoint, etc. BUT once you turn over control to Stern then all that goes out the window and this project is BS. Plus, I believe backers will be disappointed. Stern never delivers honesty in writing...

    Quoted from GotAQuestion:

I backed it and I didn't "fall" for anything. There are tons of nice coffee table books that range in the $200-$5000 range - basically as expensive as you want to go you can find a coffee table book. The Valentino and Naomi Campbell books are $1750 and $2000 respectively. This book is a bargain by that measure. My Guy Aitchison book Organica was $65 and it's really very similar. A book of pictures of one of my favorite hobbies, with some history.
This book is $55, and is overflowing with high-definition art and photography of my favorite hobby on high quality paper. I just threw away more than that in old shop rags. Most collectors will spend well over that every year on new bulbs and balls. The book has the added benefit of including some pinball history, but I'm honestly in it for the pictures. I'm downright excited to look through the pages and stare at the gorgeous playfields and machines.
It's amazing that people in a hobby that is 100% a luxury can't figure out that EVERYONE will spend their fun money in the way of their personal choosing.

BTW who cares what the damn book costs, it could be $10 or $1200, that is not the point at all, the points are what I wrote above plus this kickstarter not funding will send an important message to Stern that people are getting fed up with this Stern being run by venture capitalists crap

Hey JoeDP go buy some NIB Sterns like Kiss, WWE, SMVE, etc and have some clearcoat crack, some ghosting, lack of code, etc and when Stern turns their back on you let's see how excitied you are to work with them then...

    -5
    #317 7 years ago

$55,000 for a Stern book and you wonder why Stern has overall 2017 price increases, across the board quality problems, and abandoned code updates like Kiss. Jody goes crazy on a GBLE podcast like a lunatic showing why Stern's marketing and social media is anti customer. GBLE playfield replacement program pushed back, etc etc

Oh a book that gives me an opportunity to send Stern and Paperflock hundreds of dollars, chase the shiny shiny objects...

Btw thanks for all the PMs from many of you that had the same concerns about this Stern shill project as me and didn't support

    Quoted from Billy16:

I'm no great fan of Stern or their business practices, but I am a fan of history. The "company that saved pinball" is trying hard to become "the company that finally killed pinball". There is not much information out there about the history of Stern--maybe Joe will cut through the haze and Stern BS and give us some insight--we'll see.

Agreed Stern is trying real hard. Hey if Paperflock was producing an independent book about an autobiography of Stern being written by a reputable documentarian author I would be all in for a history lesson, instead this is a coffee table PR book with Stern marketing pictures and some verbiage about it. Oh how did you model the Kiss toys oh ah and how do you decide flipper gap oh ah riveting stuff

Get us a real book with real insider info and dump this coffee table junk

We get it tacshose, you don't like the project which is published by someone besides Stern, regarding the history of Stern. Congratulations on your moral high ground. Can you crap up some other thread now?

    Yes, yes I can

So how do Kickstarter refunds work?

    #493 6 years ago
    Quoted from Homepin:

They don't which is why they don't accept PayPus.

Oh, makes sense...umm..I need to start a Kickstarter for something to make a quick 50Gs...anyone want to help me fund building a 100 title collection, I'll write a book about it

    Quoted from puck:

My guess would be Spring 2018 before it ships. They are so far behind and are not motivated to do the smallest of updates. They also are done taking our money TagerLaw so don't expect a reply here, but they are good about returning eMail I have found. I would imagine by know we would have seen some art from Zombie Yeti. Paperflock if you are reading this, part of the fun is following along on the journey. Ups and downs. So post more, and shorter, updates. Please.

The longer it takes, the more project money is burned, so no idea why people think this being delayed will result in a better product.

Kickstarter needs a way to slowly release funds as specific milestones are met. This give them all the money at once thing is dumb, hence the countless crowd sourced failures.

    2 weeks later
    #573 6 years ago

How about starting up a KickStarter or Gofundme campaign to sue Paperflock? That should get them and Stern's attention to just refund the original Kickstarter money since this project has failed to meet the agreed upon, at time of funding, timeline.

    1 month later
    #595 6 years ago

With the Trudeau stuff this book is probably dead, they should just blame that and refund everyone. This is what happens when you delay and delay, different shit just keeps hitting the fan. If they would have been responsible stewards of everyone's money it would have been done on time. I mean WTF was the point of the delays, you could have shipped a crap book, it didn't matter, the expenses were already paid.

The delays proved the lie. All the "maybe we will sell it after kickstarter, or maybe we won't" was total BS to try and sucker people.

Stern and Paperflock wanted $50k to try and fund a possibly successful commercial endeavor for Stern's benefit. Stern as usual shifted all the risk onto their customers and will hang Paperflock out to dry when this thing never gets published.

    3 weeks later
    #650 6 years ago
    Quoted from MinusWorlds:

Refunds will not happen. The risk is solely on the backers.

Oh I agree, nothing to refund, in the great tradition of Kickstarter the money was long ago spent, the backers delayed and delayed begging for more time and then when they know all hope is lost, they run away and hide. The only wrinkle with this project is Stern, but as we all know Stern bails nobody out but themselves, so again the pinball and Pinside community gets screwed.

Stern is lucky the dollar amount is so small as we have a generally wealthy and litigious membership.

    1 month later
    #730 6 years ago

I think your answer Pinside is that JoeDP is now a gray heart. He used and abused Pinside to run his scam, take the money, and then run away.

How does robin feel about that? Raise $50k and can't even send a Pinside donation anymore once he has the money.

Ha, it has probably all been spent, "tight" budget, "these people needed to get paid" just wait for the bombshell coming soon of sorry we ran out of money and there is no book, blame "political issues" all you want. If the book was delivered on time you could have skipped all the Trudeau mess.

You blame Stern, you say you can't talk about it, YOU took the money Joe, not Stern, you.

    Quoted from cooked71:

You have to remember this was started at the time of maximum arrogance at Stern. It was in the context of the 50th anniversary party and the Batman 66 Sle application to buy with outrageous pricing yet being delivered with no code. A book celebrating Stern, yet funded by its own customers seemed to fit in perfectly.

Only because Stern customers, formerly myself included, were fucking idiots and only recently has Stern felt the hit to the pocket book. LUCI was ran out of desperation, people have wised up to Sterns bullshit in multiple areas.

Where did the publisher get the $30,000? From our pockets on Pinside? From suckers on Kickstarter? Nope, sounds like $30,000 of their own money, wow what a difference that makes in motivation and accountability. Awesome job toddtuckey I love your YouTube and once your books are available to ship count me in as a buyer.

Hey JoeDP I’ve made it clear to Patrick Powers at Stern your clusterfuck plays into why I’m never buying another Stern game.

    #992 5 years ago
    Quoted from MrBally:

The whole situation is a joke. The book is a snoozefest. No one (Noone) wants it anymore.

I think PinMonk proved even as a picture book this thing is gonna suck.

Watch the Kickstarter video again and be as confused as I am about how Stern can stay silent on this BS

    https://vimeo.com/187289878

    #1313 5 years ago
    Quoted from TigerLaw:

How did Joe get to Stern? Did he know someone there who vouched for him? If so, who? Surely Stern didn’t help promote someone who just cold called them...he had to have a path inside.
Does Joe have a normal job or was this book his primary means of income?

Anyone wanna email Stern and see if they respond?

Why can’t robin contact Stern? Don’t forget he defended, promoted, and supported this disaster too, he might as well use his pinside influence with them to get some answers.
