Quoted from unigroove:Since Pinball Magazine No. 5 is finished and available, I'm available as well. Maybe Stern should hire me to finish their book? As all the editing supposedly is already done, it should be like a walk in the park to get it over the finish line.
You have my vote
Quoted from Backyardace:Lol. I should have backed the 12” Centipede arcade machines. They cost less and people actually received them this month.
Still waiting for ours :-/
You could ask/complain to PaperFlock (and possibly Stern) on Twitter - that way they cannot delete the tweet.
Quoted from toddtuckey:The cabaret or the full size? I have a sad story about one Front Line...we delivered it to an office in the World Trade Center in the mid 90's..after the first bombing...he bought 5 games for his office. He sold his business in August 2001 and our guys went to the WTC in late AUGUST to get three of the machines he wanted to keep...we left two games there for the new owners...I cannot remember if Front Line was left there or not...but two of those games were destroyed of course! SO we were in that building about three weeks prior to the final bombing!
Oh wow
Was there ever a response from Stern (for those that emailed / reached out to them) regarding this book? Surely we need an official statement from them, as we all made a decision to back this book due to their name / stature in the pinball world. I mean this book is about them, so they should care what these so-called PaperFlock peeps are doing with it. The longer they leave it (making a statement - good or bad), the more speculation and laughable this thing becomes.
Because of this damn book (& the failed Gameband Atari watch) I no longer invest in any Kickstarters. The trust has been eroded.
If they show that they ‘tried’ had ‘intent’, then no recourse from Kickstarter. It’s a trust system. With an actual electronic product they must have a working prototype before Kickstarter allows the campaign to go ahead. Perhaps they should extend this to books (have a draft at the least that is prepared). Peeps bypass this (having a prototype etc) by going to other crowdfunding sites (like indiegogo) that don’t have the same (stringent) rules.
Quoted from TigerLaw:Yea, I understand that aspect of it but one would think these people had their reputations on the line at least. Their reputation with the pinball community is damaged clearly but they could do this again to another community. Maybe a book on hydrofoil boats or something...
It just seems there should be a way to document their failure to timely deliver a product (and no product of any kind for two years past the promise delivery)...this might stop a repeat of this situation from harming others. Just a thought.
Totally agree. Only problem is that these people know how to game the system by changing their business / company names and use secondary names (when creating new products) to stifle research of their past (unscrupulous) behaviour. I’ve been burned twice now (shame on me), so no more crowdfunding.
For those that want to copy & paste @j_m_ 's wording into the Kickstarter comments section:
I invoke my rights under Kickstarter's Terms of Use:
https://www.kickstarter.com/terms-of-use/oct2012
"Project Creators are required to fulfil all rewards of their successful fundraising campaigns or refund any Backer whose reward they do not or cannot fulfil."
I demand an immediate full refund for my pledge amount.
What should we vote for? Will it really take another couple months to get the “best”? If it’s two months, we can wait - heck we’ve waited this long, what’s another couple of months. But, we all know two months will turn into a year plus. Hate being pessimistic :-/
Quoted from Rondogg:I wonder if we're going to get production numbers for recent machines?
Doubtful. If they did, it would delay this clusterf**k of a book by years.
Quoted from Phat_Jay:If you actually believe what they are saying now.....
True :-/
Project Update #42: Keeping the Ball Alive: 30 Years of Stern Pinball by PaperFlock Inc
It's been a long road but the end is in sight at last! As we roll into Thanksgiving week, we have much to be thankful for, first and foremost all of you!
Our gratitude doesn't stop there. Thanks to Robert Berk, Roper Fuentes, and a few wonderful Kickstarter backers and their rare machines, we’ve been able to document a couple more of our final games, bringing the missing tally down to…
The final Four!
1. Jurassic Park - Lost World
2. NFL
3. Sharkey’s Shootout
4. NBA
We are actively seeking these final games and have personally reached out to collectors with these last remaining games to round out the complete collection. Video Amusement in San Francisco has been kind enough to allow us to visit and shoot their NBA and NFL games the second week of December. While in the area we are looking to also connect with collectors who have Sharky's Shootout and Jurassic Park - Lost World. Messages have been sent to anyone in the the Bay Area and Sacramento asking if we might gain access to document these final pins.
In design news, we’ve completed the “How It’s Made” section and now have ALL chapters completed we have content for: The Foreward, Story, Data East era, Sega era, Stern era and the Building of a Pinball Machine. We have printed our first full size set of color match proofs, and brought all 240 pages to Stern last week for a sit down and review. Feed back and first impressions from everyone was immensely positive and we are already well into another full pass through the book to finalize each page for the second set of printed proofs after the final games pages are added.
Leading up to our next shoot we are moving on to the credits, acknowledgements, and finally the table of contents. When all this is complete we will have a final in-person review with Stern and then move on to the printing presses! Dust jacket editions are also in the works and will be printed ahead of the physical books in order to allow time for all the signatures to be completed. Other rewards are either currently in production or will be soon so everything will be ready to go at the same time as the book.
Thank you again for your patience and support. We could not have done this without you and we can’t wait for you all to get these in your hands!!
Happy Thanksgiving!
- Dameon & Joe, and the Paperflock Team
Quoted from PinMonk:Haha, I initially read that as "Keeping the Bull Alive" and thought you made a joke ornament.
Lol. Unfortunately the joke is on all of us backers
Quoted from j_m_:quit teasing me with an ornament that I never received (and apparently, I wasn't alone)
any takers on if they'll actually deliver a book in 2020?
Oh man, I’m sorry It’s a crappy ornament that I’d forgotten about till I accidentally stumbled upon when clearing out old paperwork.
As for 2020, I guarantee they’ll have more excuses (like changing the Stern’s 35th anniversary part) that will just keep pushing out the timeline.
BTW, not sure why we would have to pay for shipping when it was already factored in the pledge at the time. No f**king way will I be re-paying for shipping!
Darn it, it's another kick in the teeth re: shipping. But thank you for making me login to KS to check my pledge, I totally forgot about the t-shirt, poster and the digital wallpaper pack. I'd be stunned if they honour everything (as they should)!
Correction, just checked, our pledge definitely had postage already factored into it and been paid for.
Quoted from cooked71:What was the point of that survery? Do they have no idea how backers view this project?
They wanted to see if we were still suckers for an extended edition.
No backerkit email received as yet. I guess they’ll blame the hold up because people aren’t responding to something that hasn’t been received. Ludicrous.
Woke up this morning and had to rub my eyes at the shipping cost to Australia: $85.35 (that’s AU$118)! Absolutely outrageous.
If we forfeit the book, he’ll dump it on Amazon for $90 and I bet he’ll sell them all. Hate to say it, He is in a win win position.
Complaint sent via Billy16’s KS link.
Why do people think it’s cool to fleece pinball folks. PaperFlock are nothing but scammers now. My blood pressure has skyrocketed since receiving the backerkit email. Hate everything about this Kickstarter project.
Quoted from RebelGuitars:How much are they charging you shipping?
A fleecing amount!
Won't ship for another week or so (according to them) - so take that as you wish. If these get received before Xmas, I'll be stunned! Roll on 2021 :-/
Quoted from PinMonk:You can't buy just the book, sorry. It's just one component of a deluxe PS4/PSVita video game release I did.
Damn, that would’ve been awesome!
Surely you can’t even try to be this incompetent. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, wellll....
Woohoo, Unboxing photos/videos soon. I’ll keep the cardboard box and toss out the book.
Why is it that every time I see / receive an email from them it’s always excuses. Just ship the damn things, send me my tracking details and close out this fucking shit show! This KS has been bad for my health.
Quoted from WJxxxx:Has anyone overseas had a tracking email yet, or are we going to wait until 2021?
Nothing as yet. We’ll be at the tail end of the quoted 4 to 6 weeks to ship all 444 books, so perhaps mid to late Jan 2021 (if we are lucky & no more excuses from these people).
Any international backers received shipping confirmations? How bloody slow can these guys be - are they boxing and shipping 2 per day?!
After this book debacle and losing more $$$ on the Atari Gameband, I know I said no more backing Kickstarter projects, but the CobraPin Pinball Controller looks pretty tempting (it hasn’t gone live as yet though).
Quoted from hool10:Hey folks just so you are aware, your book may have been shipped without you knowing. If you got an e-mail saying that you got a digital wallpaper, click on the link to get it. In the upper right hand corner click on "view confirmation". In the upper left hand corner you may see a USPS tracking for your pledge.
The wallpaper is the book pages itself in 1920x1200, 1920x1080, 5K resolution. There is also MACOSX versions and mobile variants. To me the photos are just washed out. We are talking full on overhead lamps they were using just washing out all the details, contrast settings turned up, reflections (may have the glass on as well), to cropping images distorting them. Space Jam I'm using as an example as poor page layout. They couldn't fit the overhead shot onto the page so they cropped it and squished it. We don't even get a pf shot of Harley. It's a complete mess!
Folks who have received this book tell me I'm wrong please!

Thanks heaps @hool10! Followed your instructions and found that my order (book/t-shirt etc) was shipped on January 9 (with USPS tracking info). It is amazing to me that it took a good Pinsider to help advise of my item being shipped. Breathtaking stuff.
Quoted from ChrisBardon:So 60 days out-has anyone seen a refund yet? Nothing on my end so far.
Hold your horses, these guys are still shipping the books. Once that’s done, they’ll need a holiday from all of their hard work. Once they get back, perhaps then they might think about the refunds.
Quoted from cooked71:Ha, lucky you paid so much for the shipping - took 2 weeks to leave the US.
I am actually laughing about it right now, otherwise i'd go bonkers. Perhaps it may get here before the end of Jan, but I don't like my chances.
Quoted from PinMonk:This Kickstarter has been pretty crap, but there have been and continue to be great ones. This Flipper Zero one has had great communication and really good progress since it started and is looking close to being done to delivering a really cool gadget that you would never have seen at retail. If this is the only Kickstarter you've ever backed, I wouldn't let it dissuade you from backing other weird/quirky/promising things there.
Wish I had backed this.
Quoted from Off2War:Sorry if this has been asked previously, but is the book available for purchase for non backers?
Not at this stage.
Book is heavy, which is a good sign. It was wrapped in tissue paper and big-ass bubble wrap. The t-shirt and poster were just thrown in the box - luckily they were undamaged. Oh yeah, lots of backers’ names at the back of the book (so even if you opted for a refund, you are still immortalised inside the book).

It was a copy & paste job
Quoted from Looking4FirstPin:Hello everyone. I'd love to get my hands on this book. Do you know if this is generally available?
It’s not...... yet
