Quoted from Rockytop:I was thinking one thing that might be cool would be a difficult shot like the jump ramp in NGG to destroy the death star.
That would be slick ... for a Death Star shot / tough shot to make that'll earn you some kind of "major award", I'd make it more like that skill shot on Capcom's Airborne ... there's a bumper that the player engages when the ball is shot up the ramp ... hit it at the right time and you lock a ball or get big points.
In fact, Airborne could be made into a rather great Star Wars machine in general ... two things would need to be done before you could get serious though ... one is mounting a small LCD in the center of the playfield so that you can change themes (a Star Wars pinball is nothing if you can't choose to be part of the Rebel Alliance or Empire). On Airborne, you'd basically rip out all of the lower-center inserts and art & replace with an LCD that displays either X Wing cockpit art or TIE Fighter cockpit art .
The other thing would be replacing the AIR and SHOW inserts with some kind of OLED displays so that you can change the letters to things like SITH, HAN, BEN, C3PO, R2D2, TIE, etc. depending on the mode .
Oh, the air tower in Airborne needs to be replaced with a rotating toy that can represent the Death Star, Bespin, or the front of an ATAT for Hoth ... oh, and RGB LEDs to change the mood of the game depending on mode (ice blue for Hoth, "orangy" for Bespin, reddish for anything dealing with Darth Vader, greenish for Degobah or Endor, Yellowish for Tatooine, etc.).
Also, a lot of those Pat Lawlor "line" inserts need to be added (think Wizard Blocks or Dialed In) so that you can do some cool laser blast effects on the playfield (with RGB LEDs of course).
Yeah, I can dream, can't I? . Seriously though, Airborne's layout, flow, and shots would make for one hell of a Star Wars game . It's a very underrated Capcom table.
