Quoted from ForceFlow:Boy, that looks disappointing
That was my first reaction ... but the more I look at it, the more I like it .
I have a feeling the color scheme was chosen for ambient lighting depending on mode ... look at the playfield ... they have inserts for Endor, Hoth, and Tatooine ... I'll bet the GI lights change depending on mode. To pull that off, you need lighter colors to reflect the ambient light. Solid black (space) wouldn't work.
I wonder if the LE has the hyperspace effect animated somehow .... that particular scene was seared in my head as a kid when I saw ESB with my dad way back in 1980. I'm completely liking what I am seeing though I know I'm in the minority.
Quoted from J85M:but do the pro and premium translites look hand drawn?
They all look hand drawn.
I think the LE translite has a 3D effect and I'd be stunned if the hyperspace field isn't animated somehow (think Black Hole & the rotating disc).
Quoted from Sinestro:Maybe you could play the old Atari Arcade game on one of the LCD screens.
That's still one of the greatest arcade games ever made. Graphics these days are beyond incredible, but that game still has the best "feel" when it comes to a Death Star assault.
Quoted from ForceFlow:I wonder how long before we see something like pin2000 surface again...
I'd have to think sooner rather than later. LCDs are dirt cheap and lightweight these days. That platform was never given a fair shot . I love RFM, but Ep I was terrible (seemed rushed and pasted together).
Quoted from hank527:I'm not digging the LE artwork at all.
I lucked out with the LE artwork ... I love that backglass ... reminds me of the first time I saw ESB with my dad back in 1980 ... I can see why people like the others, but I frigging *love* the LE's translite and cabinet art.
Quoted from jar155:Not mine, but I had to share...
I hate coming off as a Star Wars apologist, but I'm actually thrilled it is like AC/DC ... I have zero desire to own an AC/DC but love the layout. This kind of kills two birds with one stone for me (though I can see why people that like both AC/DC and Star Wars will be torqued off ... the layouts are ridiculously similar).
Also, it *almost* looks like there might be long inserts under the lightsabers Ben and Darth are holding ...
Quoted from swampfire:I'd love to see another playfield with a black background, like Congo.
Check out Alien's playfield ... it looks even better in real life with lighting.
I think Star Wars' art is going to mix well with the lighting (I suspect they'll change the color of the lighting depending on mode ... that is sheer speculation, but I can't see them *not* doing that).
Quoted from J85M:Does anyone know how the rails on STLE lite up? was that EL paper or LEDs set into a routed grove in the cabinet?
LEDs. They're driven by a board I inadvertently blew up while shopping the game . I plugged the damn wiring harness into the board the wrong way and one of the shift registers got a little bulge in it . I got lucky actually ... the LED boards are all OK ... they're just locked on all the time when driven by the broken board.
I must have repaired well over 100 machines ... this was the first time I ever did that (I also failed to label the connectors since I was "in a hurry ... 'in a hurry' and 'pinball repair don't mix ). At least I can repair it and not pay frigging $50 for a damn board with two SN7400HC series chips and some connectors .
Quoted from alveolus:I just wish they would gone with a menacing Star Destroyer on the cabinet.
It's still possible ... I thought I read a few pages back that each side of the cabinet will be different across all models.
Quoted from Trekkie1978:Did everyone who wanted to order an LE get allocated an LE?
I basically paid in full two months ago to guarantee myself an LE from a reputable dealer ($8K down "guaranteed" an LE).
Clarify : $8K down "guaranteed" a spot to buy the next LE from Stern ... not Star Wars in particular.
They are not allocated yet though ... I don't think they can do that formally until the 6th.
I had absolutely no inside knowledge that Star Wars was the next release, but given all of the Pinside chatter and various posts Steve Ritchie made on Facebook, I kind of determined that Star Wars was next. I was not going to miss this.
I cannot see myself not falling in love with this game . If I don't like it, I'll make sure I report that as I don't want to see others pissing away money on a dog. I doubt that will be the case though .
Quoted from Aurich:Only idiots think this is a good hobby to be in.
I say similar things all of the time, but haven't even considered leaving ... it's too much damn fun!
Quoted from PiperPinball:The LE translight art needs to be re-done. However, the Prem is way better overall.
I love the LE backglass. It reminds me of High Speed in a way . I have to admit that I'll be disappointed if the backglass isn't animated in some way though. That thing is crying out for some kind of lighting to make it look like real hyperspace .
Quoted from trunchbull:They feel like the "game" is secondary to the ruleset.
They're all high speed (pun intended) flow games . It seems like he sacrifices depth for rapid execution of goals. His formula is certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but I've generally liked to loved his releases over the years (BK2K is my all time favorite ... Part of that is nostalgia of course).
I like all sorts of pinball, but he's the best when it comes to the style of games I prefer.
Quoted from T-800:Clearly people are amped up on both sides of the fence. Lets get back to speculation; at least thats fun.
Some things I think we are going to see :
1. GI will change colors based on mode. It would help explain the light pallette used on the playfield.
2. LE backglass will be animated somehow. I can't see an artist leaving that cockpit of the Millennium Falcon nothing but a static hyperspace image. Hell, I'd even consider throwing an LCD in there and make my own animated backglass if it turns out to be a static image .
3. There has to be magnets and other surprises. I haven't done a full count, but I can't see how all of the solenoid drivers are used right now (I know Spike distributes the solenoids across multiple boards, but you typically have around 20 high voltage solenoids in a modern game)
Quoted from PinSinner:she is suddenly the most stunning woman you have ever seen.
You can say that again. WOW. Not Lynda Carter, but WOW!
Quoted from vid1900:Only a few crabby nutsacks read Pinside every day
They make a gel to cure that ... From what I hear anyway.
Quoted from TVP:GoT-LE was the only game I ever sold at a loss. I see the same for richie's newest release.
Star Trek LEs dipped as low as $6K in the fall of 2014 (that's when I snatched one up) ... they're back up *around* what they sold for new. Of course, it won't sell instantly at a higher price like a Tron LE (as an example). I doubt I'll be selling it anytime soon ... my son would kill me . He's only three, but he's a scary three and is way too addicted to that game .
Overall, and please don't interpret this as an LE owner trying to hype their particular game (I'm not that petty), you need to treat a purchase of an LE as a "toy" vs. an investment. LEs will probably have decent collector value years from now. However, the 'instant spikes' you saw with previous LEs is more than likely a thing of the past. I'll be getting a Star Wars LE and couldn't care less what happens to the price (well, I wouldn't be angry if it spiked up to the infamous $10K by Christmas nor will I be happy if it plummets to 1/2 the purchase price by Christmas ... I'll just enjoy the damn thing and forget about those details ) ... this will be my first and likely last NIB purchase since I prefer used at a discount .
If you worry about the value of these things when you buy them, you shouldn't be buying NIB ... just get yourself 'player' versions of the games you enjoy on the secondary markets ... those tend to hold their value well. If the value of something is more your thing, you're going to make a lot more money buying and holding mutual funds over the long haul and getting excellent condition used pins .
Quoted from Damonator:just look at the price of DESW right now.
I *really* want to like the DE Star Wars machine. I've passed on so many over the years. I never thought in a million years it'd be worth what it's going for these days. Like Star Wars Trilogy, it's missing something (to me) and I never felt like there were enough bangs for the bucks spent ... there were always better machines to snatch up. That's just my opinion though ... the market clearly thinks otherwise .
If this Stern SW is a dog, the value of DESW is going to go even higher over the long haul. I can't picture the new one being worse that SWT. This will more than likely be the last time you see a pinball with a Star Wars theme that is original trilogy only, so one of the two will be crowned "best" over the course of the next year or so .
Anyone notice that the premium description states 2 LCDs while the pro says nothing about another LCD? Ugh.
Quoted from Aurich:Why does Dwight insist on putting video modes in his games?
I think casual players like them ... I'm hoping there is a way to disable them .
Quoted from Yoko2una:More like you can now buy these "EZ Mount Add-On" toys after the fact in the Stern shop!
I have a sick feeling that's going to be the case. That would explain the overall barren feel of the playfield.
If anyone gets the game early, please check and see if there are lots of spare plugs lying around in the cabinet .
Quoted from chuckwurt:Lots of extra spots to plug in accessories.
This will be the first Spike system I'll have seen.
I'll bet there will be over $1K in "official" Stern produced accessories for this game. Ugh.
Quoted from Chambahz:Otherwise, it'll be one expensive door stopper!
I don't think it will come down to this ... I'm just kind of displeased with the lack of additional goodies on the LE.
I think the game is going to be outstanding overall ... I just wished there were more LE goodies (hell, I'd settle for their version of Invisiglass and a shaker motor in addition to the translites and armor! ).
Quoted from KozMckPinball:If you took the LE side rails off it would be tough to determine which model is actually the LE.
Yep. That's what's frustrating. I'm not looking for "elite" status owning an LE ... I want crap that makes me go "WOW!" . The LE doesn't have that (though I do love the LE translite ... not $1100 more love it, but I find that to be my favorite of the three).
Before you know it, an LE will mean "you get code updates two weeks before anyone else" (i.e. you pay them to be QA testers). This same thing happened with Star Wars Battlefront on the PS4/Xbox/PC to those that blew $60 on a "season pass" .
..
..
..
I hope I didn't give Gary any ideas.
Quoted from Colsond3:This thing better have Chewie yodeling at some point in the audio.
... and the shaker motor that doesn't come with the game better shake the machine rather crazy when he yells .
Quoted from Shapeshifter:Pinballheaven video......
I think we need to shift gears and analyze every frame of attract mode.
I can't believe Stern was too cheap to use different colors for text over the Star Wars logo ... almost makes the QR code wash out.
Moreover, will I have enough time to scan the QR code?!?!?!?!?
To hell with this ... time to cancel the LE ...
(sarcasm)
Quoted from CobraClutch:It's a bunch of stars, but not Star Wars.
Well, first, it's the attract screen ... and I doubt that's all there is to it.
Second, remember the galaxy at the end of Empire Strikes Back where Leia and Luke watched Lando and Chewie take off for Tatooine?
Quoted from Psw757:It isn't that bad especially if you really enjoy the Star Wars theme.
I agree with your assessment overall ... I just find the game to be too bland for the money they command. I'm sure Pinsound helps a lot with the atmosphere, but it still is missing something (to me ... to each their own ).
I do love the art on that playfield though ... I plan on getting a CPR bronze one when they're released for wall art. I don't like hanging golds on the wall since (in my best Indy voice) "they belong in a machine" .
One must have Star Wars game is the old Atari one ... to this day, there still hasn't been a Star Wars game that captures the Death Star trench run. Battlepod is close, but it feels like its on rollercoaster tracks. What I would give for a company to make the old Atari game with today's graphics (but I'm veering far off topic since this is a pinball forum ).
"I like the idea of virtual pinball but I have yet to find one that was enjoyable to play due to the flipper lag. Do they exist?"
Sort of ... usually, the LCDs people put in the machine have all of the image processing bells and whistles enabled. You want to enable "game mode" on the LCD. This will remove all of that image processing and improve latency (all of that image processing is quite redundant as the video card in the PC does the exact same thing). Pinball Arcade on PS4 has horrible latency on my TV when it is not in game mode. Disable game mode and the latency is *barely* noticeable. When I run the PC version of Pinball Arcade, it's perfect.
Quoted from alveolus:Sacrilege! I wouldn't trade those classic vector graphics for anything!
Let me be clear here as I agree with you 100% !!!
Quoted from alveolus:It amazes me how well the 34 year old 3D graphics still hold up. Brilliant machine.
You will get no argument from me at all. I'll forever love that game . I have a cockpit and it won't be going anywhere so long as I live .
I'd simply like to see a version with the exact same gameplay but with modern graphics . There have been some decent attempts at Star Wars trench runs in games (X Wing on the PC and the newer Battlefront DLC) ... but they still don't give you that sense of urgency ... there is no need for total focus that you're required to have in the later trenches of the old Atari game that completely sucks you into the game.
Quoted from Darth_Chris:I can't stop looking at it and seeing my AC/DC premium.
I think the layout similarity to AC/DC is what makes SW a dream come true for me. I am not into AC/DC ... I love the pin, but I just can't bring myself to buy one since I am not a big fan of the band. Star Wars addresses this "need" for me . It's kind of the same way Star Trek filled my Spiderman gap (not a big fan of comic books, but *loved* the Spiderman pin ... just not enough to buy it).
I do feel for those that love AC/DC & Star Wars ... that'd be a tough sell since the layouts are very, very similar.
Quoted from Whysnow:Anyone else experiencing this on route?
This happened to me twice when I played it the other night on location ... It missed a couple of coin drops (played it 3 times ... It was set to $1/play ... Lost two tokens ... I don't think it was their token mechs as they never jammed ... You could hear the coin drop too ... Been around this stuff long enough to know the difference )
I agree with your review of the gameplay ... The way this game shoots is like a dream come true for me (I totally get others may not like the style). I wish the playfield was a bit less sparse, but that's a minor complaint & I suspect the stuff on the premium/LE will kind of address that. Bottom line is that I'll get the LE and love it . If it goes down in value, oh well ... I'll probably have a few thousand plays on it in no time .
I hate to bring up Dialed In on this thread, but the only thing the two games have is that they're pinball ... They're two totally different styles of pinball. I'll probably snatch up a Dialed In later ... It's a frigging rad game, but Star Wars is the style I prefer & don't mind throwing silly money at .
Quoted from PinMonk:You could always re-theme NASCAR...
Then you could retheme Star Wars into Firepower III
