It's GoT all over again... horrible looking in isolation but you hope the game play is fun.
Wow, it's like they didn't even try with this artwork. Who would have guessed that AS artwork would blow SW out of the water? I was highly anticipating this pin, but I'm now all that excitement is gone. That LCD screen in the middle of the playfield looks horrific, it's like it was just thrown in there. I imagine it's going to take amazing code work to make this game great.
Not what I was hoping for Stern...
Quoted from dmbjunky:Oh it's definitely fair. If the marketing department only releases low res pics and a third party video instead of a gameplay video and proper pics, they get what they deserve.
Totally agree.
Stern can control the reaction if they properly market their games. GB looked awesome so pics of the playfield were adequate but for games like GOT and SW, gameplay videos with player reaction would have been better initial reveals.
As a marketing professional myself, i completely agree. Stern has a seriously bad marketing problem across the board. a huge ton of this negitivity could have been avoided with a carefully thought out launch, generation of hype, and proper initial content.
Its not that they've "made a shitty game that upset fanboys and pinheads" but they've allowed their product to be released to the eyes of the masses on someone else's terms. Proper marketing could have built hype, focused on the positive and cool parts that made the development team so excited to work on this, rather then phoning it in.
Stern: If any of you are reading this, (and i know some of you are). You have a SERIOUS marketing issue, starting at the top. Might be time to look into that now if you want to stay competitive in the long term.
Quoted from Aurich:It doesn't automatically mean gold!
A project/theme this big sounds like a no win problem to me. With so much history to choose from, and so many people invested in the stories/movies/books in different ways, there's not a safe answer to this. I like the art on the Premium, which make sense as Empire was my favorite film. My wife likes the art on the LE much better. There are a ton of Boba Fett fans that want him everywhere. I could care less about Boba, for me Chewie is the character I've always connected with.
I think the pics provided are horribly presented and I look forward to what the actual game will look like. I'm optimistic and plan to be in for my first NIB as this is the only theme I could possibly rationalize at this point.
Looks fun!
One to take a poke at 2nd hand someday...let someone else take that knife to cardboard hit...
Quoted from swampfire:I'd love to see another playfield with a black background, like Congo.
Check out Alien's playfield ... it looks even better in real life with lighting.
I think Star Wars' art is going to mix well with the lighting (I suspect they'll change the color of the lighting depending on mode ... that is sheer speculation, but I can't see them *not* doing that).
Quoted from megadeth2600:Check out Alien's playfield ... it looks even better in real life with lighting.
meh
Quoted from jar155:It's literally a tweaked AC/DC Pro. It's far more similar to that than anything else.
happy with that. i now hope a better gameplay than AC/DC.
Quoted from erak:Dwight is doing the code so you know it will have some super cool things eventually, if not right from the start.
Can you cite examples of this? It sounds like you are talking about Lyman, not Dwight. In recent memory, Dwight comes out of the gate almost complete, and then will do some subtle tweaks or fixes quickly. Yes, he helped pull ST out of the fire, but on games he leads, what you see is what you get.
The art is terrible. Sounds like some are trying really hard to convince themselves otherwise reading some of these posts. I could careless if you are an artist for a living; you know deep down that is a terrible art package for an iconic film. I did the same thing when I left the movie theater after watching Episode I. Took awhile for me to admit to myself that I had just watched a terrible Star Wars movie.
Pinside is pretty honest when it comes to opinions on art. Everyone gushed over Metallica (great theme), Ghost Busters (amazing theme) and Aerosmith (pretty ok theme, kinda lame, but ok) because the art package was truly great. People hating on SW, GoT, and Alien playfield because the art looked pretty uninspired.
Having said that, art aside, I've played some pins with horrible art/theme but were extremely fun. Dailed In would be the latest in my opinion. Alien playfield pretty meh but the game play looks fun. GoT another fun game. Hopefully SW will play well or epic fail.

Wow, were you getting some sno-caps in the lobby when they mentioned the mediclhorids?
Quoted from colonel_caverne:happy with that. i now hope a better gameplay than AC/DC.
You need a "A New Hope" see what I did there ?
One thing I loved about GB was the world under the glass that Stern made. The sculpted city above the pops, the library, the containment unit, the firehall, etc... It felt like a game that was already modded out. Along with the amazing art package it looked like an in credible total package. Toy wise it does a lot of cool stuff...Slimer, magna slings, subway ramp, ecto goggles.
Aerosmith comes along and has an amazing art package. Nothing super innovative toy wise, but it was well implemented.
SW seems so empty. Not just the art package, but there is no world under glass feel. They had so much they could have done. It may have some tricks up it's sleeve and do some cool things that we can't discern from a few photos, but this was my dream theme and I'm very disappointed in Stern's effort based on what I've seen.
Quoted from PinPatch:Personally I prefer the artwork style of the 1980 Hankin for a Star Wars pinball machine.
tho the artwork doesn't make any sense, it is good artwork and I would have liked this style of artwork done as well.
Quoted from jar155:It's literally a tweaked AC/DC Pro. It's far more similar to that than anything else.
Like all games it's an grouping of SR titles. You take the left bank of drops form ACDC with th middle bank acdc/T2 then throw a saucer one the side T2/NF. Then you take your 5-6 fan shots and move them around as you see fit. 2 are always going to be ramps, 2 of them are the turn around from NF etc etc.
It feels like almost every announcement follows the same timeline on pinside.
1. Blurry pictures get release.
2. An ass-load of pinsiders get butt hurt. Compare it to other pins and talk about how it will cost too much.
3. Game gets played at shows.
4. The butt hurt pinsiders love the machine.
5. Top 10

yup, spot on. Looks like a typical fan pattern, with a hatchimal and a toy stuck on the field. Similar to ST. A toy and 2 baked potatoes stuck on.

You're leaving out the part aboot ruining their childhoods.

Ditto this. It's not necessarily the art I don't like, but lack of cool gadgets and toys. Was totally hoping for an echto version of force ghosts on playfield among a zillion other ideas. Trying really hard to reserve judgement until I see it play.
Quoted from DaveH:Can you cite examples of this
GOT all day. He also made the ST code pretty great. Also while I don't think GB's code is amazing, it's pretty damn good too.
It also turns out that Dwight had a hand in some of the more classic games that I like a lot.
Quoted from vid1900:At least this looks nice.
I agree this looks awesome for a pinball toy.

You're absolutely right.

Artwork doesn't bother me. But its exactly as you mentioned with bringing up GB. GB feels like a whole world exists under the glass 100%. Just looking at the first images Stern released, people knew it was a winner and "something" different. With the images shown for Star Wars, it feels like a lot is missing. However, I do believe the code will be great and lots of amazing shots, but wished there could have been an AT-AT bash toy that falls into the playfield like in POTC, perhaps some nice sculpted scenaries. I am hoping this pin will come out and really deliver with its journey modes. This is a dream pin for me and hoping for the best.
Quoted from Bendit:...but, in the movie, the Death Star doesn't just "crack in half"...
Would have been cool if there was a green laser that fired into another planet blowing that up to release the multi ball.
Looking at the pictures, below is a quick mock-up of what I see as far as shots and targets. Flow looks OK... it appears that we have a '4 loop' shot layout with two set-up as ramps. Then we have two sets of drop targets as well as 2-3 pops and a VUK...Also a toy that might open and have balls drop onto the playfield, sonething similar to the AS toy box? The on-screen LED is nice but I don't think key to game play or flow. Unfortunately nothing that is too unique or different as I look at the whole layout. Not sure what Steve would brag about here as far as the layout and shot design?
Quoted from jar155:It's literally a tweaked AC/DC Pro. It's far more similar to that than anything else.
It's a fan layout. You'll find similarities to many games. I'm not seeing a scoop shot on the right of AC/DC. Also there is only one orbit shot to the left of the left ramp on AC/DC.

Come on, man. It's obviously a modified AC/DC pro, just as Star Trek is a modified Spider-Man. That doesn't necessarily equate to a bad thing. It will shoot well, and the code will make all the biggest differences in making it feel different. But there's no denying that he's re-using concepts.

Which are really Modified NFs...Which are all modified from HS.

I guess you were looking for something new and different then the flow style layout that SR usually puts out? Something like avengers??? Lol
Quoted from smassa:I guess you were looking for something new and different then the flow style layout that SR usually puts out? Something like avengers??? Lol
Yeah you can't win. People are back to wanting bash toys now after bitching there were too many bash toys before.
Quoted from cooked71:Surprised no one has mentioned..........Drop targets on the PRO!
Like GB, GOT, TWD
Quoted from smassa:I guess you were looking for something new and different then the flow style layout that SR usually puts out? Something like avengers??? Lol
Never Avengers. Blah.
No, I'm not using this as a way to diss Star Wars. I'm just pointing it out. I don't know why you're so defensive about something that is pretty plain to see. It will remind you of AC/DC, I'm sure, but it will probably feel quite a bit different, especially on the Premium/LE models.
Quoted from jar155:It's literally a tweaked AC/DC Pro. It's far more similar to that than anything else.
Well for me, this is awesome news. I don't have an ACDC and always wanted one. Now I am getting two pins for the price of one!!! How can I NOT buy this?

Don't forget to include the game that started it all for SR ...FLASH. Remove the upper flipper from Flash and the bottom half of SW is almost the same layout.

I have hope
For some reason all the cabinet and playfield photos turn me off
But looking at this photo which somewhat shows what the playfield looks like when given depth.....this is effin badass

Hard to see clearly, but that photo seems to back up the earlier whitewood comment about not having RGB inserts after all, the LE inserts look like normal colored ones there, anyone else agree?

I'm just looking for something that in any way, shape or form resembles an 8K machine.

Yes, it is definitely a mix of some RGB inserts and some fixed color.
