I got tired of looking at the Death Star in my Star Wars Prem/LE and had an idea!

Replace the tired looking cheap Death Star that STERN put in all the SW pinball games.. both movie and comic art versions and replace it with a Death Star 2 that fits the IV,V,VI trilogy and the SW Premium backglass art!

Great idea! that would make it unique and I love this kind of work. But the challenge was to get it to fit within the original hardware without having to modify anything... and it WAS a challenge!! Well here it is! After way too many modifications and prototypes, this final version fits in the PREM/LE Star Wars versions is done and utilizes the same STERN LED board and wire harness without having to add anything! all I had to do was re-route the original wire harness from right to left over the wire form and hinge mechanism and adjust the hinge bumpers at the back of the assembly! After that it’s basically plug and play!

Let me know what you think!

Thank you for all your comments and offers to pick one up!

The only issue I have with selling/shipping these is the end user swap out.

Most mods add a new part that doesn't exist on the game. They go under a playfield plastics mounting screw and if lighted, its simply routed underneath and tied into GI lights in just a few minutes.

While the Death Star 2 was easy enough for me to install, the end user would need to be able to spend 1hrs to relocation the existing wire harness back over to the left side exactly as I did and adjust out the 2 hinge bumpers in the back of the assembly. if anything is out of place or adjusted wrong, the two sides won't meet up correctly or the wiring for both sides of the Death Star could get bound up in the hinge mechanism and hinder the sides from moving freely.

For anyone that has cleared a playfield and done full restorations than this would be a cake walk to complete. But for the end user that has only installed simple taped in trough lights, side art blades or figurine mods that screw in with existing screws on plastics, many things can go wrong and I would hate to see that happen to anyone without warning.

I am open to any insight offered before jumping in and selling them. advise on pricing would be appreciated by PM as well, I don't want to gouge anyone or give these away, it took considerable time to design and modify to utilize existing hardware.

#14 1 year ago

Yep put me on the list please.

#15 1 year ago

I don't even own a Stern SW pin and that is sweet!

I am interested

That looks so much better. You need to factor in your time, materials and don’t short yourself on the price. It takes effort to do what you did. And you will also need to factor in the shipping cost of boxes, bubble wrap and your time to drop them off for shipping. I would build a few of them and see what your average time spent making them is and then come up with your labor rate and add the shipping materials on top of that. Great job. Really looks great. If you do go forward you need to either make a install video or print directions with pictures. And be prepared to handle questions or issues.

I’m interested.

I had just posted in another thread how this modding community is out of control with talent right now .People will be spending the equivalent of a NIB pin $$ every couple years on mods for they’re collection if this keeps up haha .No , Im serious .I don’t have a SW but it is on my short list .If I get one ,I’ll be buying .If your going to limit the number ,I’ll probably buy one to have just in case .Fantastic work !!

Looks good! I'm in.

This is all great advice! Thank you. I will get started on the installation instructions, most likely a video. I’ve done test fits so many times now it shouldn’t take me too long to complete.

I will have a few dozen Death Star 2 mods completed this week and ready to ship within 7-14 day to allow for curing time.

The price will be set at $250 shipped priority mail. USA order only for now, I may add International orders once I see there is enough interest in them. Please send request PMs if interested.

CRCades shop should be set up tomorrow for ordering.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for everyone’s support while I get things moving forward.

Here is a quick install video to get an idea of what is involved.

Thanks!! In just a few hours and I’m already going to be backordered! You will love how this improves the appearance as much as I do!
Be sure to watch the install video and please don’t do what I did!!

I don't have a SW yet, but does this crack open like the original does? It looks like it has the dividing line, but the videos don't show it happening.

If it DOES crack open, can you post a video of that?

Fair question... Given it is for a Prem/LE as stated in the beginning of this thread.. The assumption of being able to crack open is assumed.

I'm certain OP can just go to the switch test to activate this request with a video.

It does crack open.

The Death Star destruction is a feature of gameplay, not easy at all to accomplish that level of game play… way above my skill level! But… you can go through the diagnostic menu to test the Death Star coils. The video is of the diag test.

I would like to ask for some insight. I offer this mod to Prem/LE versions because I have them here for fitment. I have had 15+ requests today for the Death Star 2 on a Pro model and home edition.
My local Distributor, Old Time Pinball, has a pro floor model for me to check the fitment on an add the front section that is missing.

Based on this illustration, I should be able to use what I’ve designed and “add back in “ what I’ve removed of the front section to make this available for the Pro version.

Is there a need? I am basically retired and started doing this for my own enjoyment of my games… had no idea other would appreciate it. So, I suppose my question is, is it worth 6500 to pick up a pro to confirm fitment for Pro Prem and LE?

INTERNATIONAL ORDERS
Please use these links below to place your orders through eBay’s platform using their safe and easy Global Shipping Program.
The costs for products includes eBay’s fees, shipping to US address, shipping overseas and any required VAT or customs import fees.
This isn’t cheap but solves the issues of doing the international orders “in-house” which is too complicated and involved.

Prem/LE editions for both Movie and comic art versions.

What a beautiful mod

1 week later
#46 1 year ago

Got the mod before I left this weekend for a trip.

Back now and ready to insert the unit tonight. Will post a photo to add to the collection. This mod print is stunning….

I get why the the orientation of the destroyed Death Star is swapped from the current light configuration Stern provided.

It models how it looks in the movies. This is accurate and happy to do what is necessary to make it look right.

#47 1 year ago

Just looking for a little assistance from those that have installed this beautiful mod.

I am having a hard time lining up the two halves of the shell. Is anyone else having this issue? Also my original death star has 4 screws that holds the shell in place on either side. The install video shows only 3 on each side, so I am not sure if Stern changed something during its production that may have affected the dimensions of the death star which is leading to my misalignment.

Thanks for any help.

I have to 2nd this. The actual install is rather easy if you start/stop the installation video and do as instructed.

I’m wondering if my issue (maybe others) is that we are trying to put this mod on the original build?? Mine was made in 2017 and I noticed your machine is newer.

Your instructions said to unscrew 3 screws holding the Death Star piece. Mine has 4 screws.

A little different, but makes me question the full hardware component to what else could be different.

See photo. Also, did anyone else have some glue hiding the cable in place? I wonder if that was from Stern or the person I bought the machine from.

This is my current configuration after giving up for the night. I had it a millimeter or 2 off from perfect and thought just a little more adjustment and I’m done.. well, I screwed that up.

I’ve tried alternating from loosening the screws on one side, attempt to push the piece up/down and screw it down in hopes I’ve adjusted a millimeter or so of the wiggle room you have to play with.

Each time I see that the right side Death Star piece should be lowered.. so, lower the screw holes.

I’ve also tried moving the left Death Star piece “up” but it’s maxed out.

I’ve thought about shaving off the notch at the bottom to see if that can improve the wiggle to align it right.

By far aligning the pieces is the hardest part of the install.

So…. How was other experiences? Do you have an early run of Star Wars and cannot fit this mod in accurately??

Hey guys, the question about 3-4 screws. All the hardware for the death star is the same for all runs of the Prem/LE. All death stars on these models have 4 screw holes for the hinge but the bottom one I put a tab in to assist alignment since many didn’t have the last screw. Pretty tough to get at as well.

No modifications are needed to align the halves, only adjustment to the bumpers and the install screws should not be torqued just snugged up.

Since all parts are screwed or bolted in place and the 2 halves of the Death Star are screwed and tabbed into a hinge - the only thing that can prevent alignment is wiring and zip ties left in the way that are preventing a proper fit. Once the wires and zip ties are out of the way the assembly will align with a little adjustment of the bumpers.

Just be patient. Once it’s within 1-2mm the springs will pull it all into place.
