I have a Bally Vector machine and the start button no longer functions. It not only will not start games, but also doesn't operate in the tests sequence. I've tested fuses in the bottom of the machine and they seem fine. I tried testing the switch behind the button and believe this may be the issue. With the button pressed, I show no resistance when I test the post coming out of the bottom of the switch (see photo). However, I am not able to make a connection when I test the post coming out of the side of the switch (see other photo). These two posts are connected by a resistor. I may be on the wrong track, but any thoughts/advice from here would be greatly appreciated!

I can't make out exactly how you are testing. There should be two wires going to the switch. With your meter connected to those wires you should have no resistance when the button is pressed, infinite resistance when it's not pressed.

According to the Pinwiki: http://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Bally/Stern#The_Importance_of_Diodes_and_Capacitors_on_Switches
there is a diode connected to each pair of switch blades. You'll want to test the diode on the start button switch.

According to page 17 of the manual located at IPDB http://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=2723 your start button is switch #8 (I think).
If we go back to the Pinwiki and look at the switch matrix http://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Bally/Stern#Switch_problems
we find 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 are column 1 and 8,16,24,32,40 are row 8. If your switch seems to be working and its diode tests good you'll want to check other switches in the column and row as the next step in troubleshooting. For example, switch #3 is labeled Outhole. If it's broken, switches 3-8 will not work.

It could also be the fetzer valve or the bypass line. You may want to get some 30 weight ball bearings and some 3 in 1 oil.
Or, ask those guys in the early SS tech forum, they may be able to help you more.

Thank you, YeOldPinPlayer! Your succinct troubleshootitng outline helped me isolate the problem and get the answer quickly! There was a spare wire in the base of the cabinet that had come in contact with a sort of mesh wire attached to the cabinet that was causing a short. Needless to say, I cleaned the rest of the junk out of the cabinet - it turns out it is not a good storage space for parts...
