My Gal LOVES Star Gazer. She is kicking my ass on it so far. AWESOME! Thanks again for a great transaction Rob. Both games playing phenomenally but I am going to jack up SG and throw some 475 or 450 coils on the flippers.

You’re welcome! Enjoy!!

I’m about to start getting back to my stargazer build. What stand up switches is everyone using? I have the white faces but need the actual switch. I know there are tons of options but what’s best? Also, I have the spinners but need the spinner mounting brackets. What are we using for those as well?

#603 10 months ago

anyone got an apron or apron decal?

Yes. Please see the Stern Apron Decal Thread, post #40.

I would go with something like this from PBR. It has the metal backing strip and what is called and anti-sway bracket.

Pinball Life has a similar item.

You might want to get some switch plates so you can add a 3rd lug for the diode the way Stern did it.

https://www.pinballlife.com/switch-plate-right.html

[att=7569480,3383481 caption=""

And Marco has this assembly that looks like it has all you need. Cheaper, too.

#606 10 months ago

Are you just removing the target faces from then then?

#607 10 months ago

OK going from experience here, the anti-sway bracket is great but in order to fit into the Star Gazer target holes, you have to grind the back lip off of them. Otherwise they get squeezed and close the switches permanently.

Just find a switch bracket of your liking (I do still use the anti-sway and just grind down the back with a bench grinder). Only pic I could find on my phone. I covered the back with shrink tube since grinding can cause some sharper edges.

https://www.pinballlife.com/target-switch-no-target-face.html (I recommend you order the round face because there's a matching inset on the target linked next, but honestly either will work)
https://pinside.com/pinball/market/shops/1385-bob-s-pinball-stuff/05863-target-faces (also available from PBR for the same price if you're already ordering stuff from Steve).

Place the sway bracket on the backside of the switch.

That's a different bracket. Your suggestion would not work.

What is the difference, please?

It fits in the hole with plenty of clearance. I used 11 of these in my Star Gazer build with the white target faces.

I don't understand what you are saying.

Because it's a different bracket. You did not use the anti-sway. https://www.pinballlife.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=BK3

OK. I see.

In this case, just get the targets that Marco is selling.

Did Stern even install a metal bracket stop on the Star Gazer style standup targets? I didn't think they did since GI sockets were mounted so close on half of them. I thought they were worried about a short. I also thought the design of the full length targets faces kind of removed the need for them.

#614 10 months ago

It's probably (definitely) overkill to have the anti-sway but they were cheaper when I was ordering. That might have been another reason I put the heat shrink on the bracket. Been a couple years at this point, so I can't recall.

#615 10 months ago

Now I am extra curious. Can anybody verify how the OEM standup targets were assembled on Star Gazer? Did they have a metal stop bracket or was it omitted?

#616 10 months ago

Ok. I’m just going to get the regular ones with the Brackets, And just take the faces off

For those of you considering a reproduction backglass. I have them both installed now. Greg at Fantasticpinball can do the standard one while Coos offers the mirrored version. They both look great.

Yes, I do currently have 2 Star Gazers. The mirrored one will be up for sale soon (first photo).

Hey all. Things have moved very slow here. I won’t get too deep into excuses, but this is a side hobby and my main gig can be a bit much. The repairs on the printer have been completed including the playfield printing jigs for both standard and wide body playfields. The test print for the DTF apron decals came back. The hope for the apron decals is to set the file up with a print on demand service. I just have to find the right one with the right product. Open to suggestions.

Fantastic

Marco’s are ok quality. Better than nothing. Didn’t cottonm4 just make a batch on clear Mylar? Those looked good but we’re they just Big Game or did you do both, Cotton?

If you have an automotive paint supply store in your town, you could take your back box to them for a color match. Sherwin Williams can also scan to match colors.

Can anyone educate me on the lighting of the player up numbers on the Stargazer backglass?
Has someone designed the mod for this?

Even though there are numbers there there's no controlled lamps behind it. Player up is shown by flashing the player's display itself. Lamp map is full so adding lamps to the software and modding it would require some kind of special setup.

Wow, I never realized those were even there before.

The back lit number went out with EMs when the programmers figured flashing the score was even better, but they left the player numbers there for folks not familiar with the standard layout. Plus four less wires in the insert harness.
