Im hoping for new playfields and plastics very soon!

Who is making the Stargate plastic set? Not on Mirco's radar that I am aware of.

Quoted from PinballManiac40:

Playfields first, and then we will see more I think.

Mirco usually does the playfields, the plastics and some radcals.

If I had a spare set of used or broken ones, I can have the reproduced in PET-G.

Vitaly does a pretty good job. Though screened is better than ink-jet.

But, if its the only game in town...

I'm inclined to wait and see what Mirco comes up with.

It sounds like its going to be a great time to be a Stargate owner!

Starship Fantasy does repo plastics too. They do good work. They just need a lot of interest first.

They have not done any Gottlieb items.

Mirco has the rights, Im curious to see what he comes up with.

His recent offerings are top notch for the most part.

I know they have the rights to the playfield, but it doesn't mean they have the rights to the plastic set. My comment was only in response about Starship Fantasy.

Make sure you read about Mirco before totally going all in. They are the ones making most of JJP playfields, which have lot of clearcoat issues over the years. Even other game titles they make have not been immune to issues either. Sure hope they resolve their issues.

I really think that a lot of playfield issues on NIB games is that they just dont let them cure long enough before assembly.

Other issues have been that digital print methods dont adhere to the wood as well as the screened ink.

Im hoping that as digital print methods evolve, a sufficient primer or adhesion promoter will solve these issues.

Either way, new playfields are desperately needed and I will be buying one.

Quoted from mystman12:

Anyone know what the correct voltage for System 3 flippers is? I'm still struggling with the weak flipper issue on my Stargate and my flippers appear to be measuring at about 80 to 90 VDC unless I'm measuring it wrong. Red is on a flipper lug and black is going to ground.
[quoted image]

Still unsure what the correct voltage is supposed to be. Could someone please take a measurement of their flipper and let me know what it is on their game?

#1560 2 years ago

I have joined the Stargate club! I bought it as is with very little history. Pray for me, I will be plugging it in for the first time this weekend.

#1561 2 years ago

Add me to the club! Just picked it up on Sunday. Lots of cleaning to do...

Can you make one out of Lexan plexiglass. It is much harder then regular plexiglass. It is easy to work with. Sold at Lowes. Maybe $8 small piece. Just a suggestion.

My GI flashes/dims when I push the flippers, should I look at rebuilding the power supply or is it just the way it is on this era of Gottlieb?

#1568 2 years ago
Quoted from Charles_Kline:

The GI goes through one of the 3 relays at the bottom of the cabinet. I think that is one potential issue. Loose GI fuse holder is another.

#1569 2 years ago

Hey Guys. Thinking about purchasing a Stargate and I am trying to gauge the price? The one I’m looking out has a good cabinet, not perfect. The only real wear I see on playfield is in the bottom left most lane. They are asking $4k. I know prices are climbing everyday lately, but was just hoping maybe you guys will know a fair price? Thanks I’m advance.

#1570 2 years ago

in my opinion, if its already clean, working, and no 'major' playfield wear, $3000-3500 is not unreasonable. $4000 and up for reconditioned or better.

#1571 2 years ago

I agree with what Mope161616 said. 4K seems a little steep to me, but these days, who knows. ‍

#1572 2 years ago

Thanks for the input. I agree with the prices seems like every day they go up!

#1573 2 years ago

Lots of games are up in price. If you can find a Stargate. In nice condition. Ya, it is gonna be 4K or more. I think you are saying playfield looks average + and some wear at kick back lane. Then yes it is a bargain. I would buy it. Stargate is a great game, if you can find one. I would not sell mine for 4K. Gotlieb

I see ball wear above the sarcophagus. Not worth $4k

The game looks in good condition.
If its not all hacked up and everything works as it should, $4k is just about right.

In 18 months you will kick yourself for not buying it.

Prices are up 25% across the board including replacement parts at Marco.

#1577 2 years ago

Im finally on the club! I bought a fairly decent example at a fair price!

Completely original with mostly no hacks.

A credit switch was foolishly drilled into the coin door which is too bad as it was a very good, new looking door.

Fortunately IJ used the same "coin controls door" and I have a couple spare ones (though not as nice).

Its an incredibly fun game with so many unique elements.

Im excited to get this game restored down the road.

Im confident that new playfields and plastic sets will be available coming up. This is the only thing holding up many of the restorations planned. Mirco has told me that the playfield blanks are cut and waiting for machine time to get them printed and cleared.

I see that there are a lot of broken left metal ramps out there, mine is no different.

Are there any metal fabricators willing to make up some new beefier ramps?

Are there any pinsider welders willing to to a little TIG on these ramps?

I think an improved ramp is in order here with a doubled up lower section for durability.

My rope light was replaced with RGB light strip poorly applied. Its a cool mod but I replaced it with a new rope light and foam sponge washers from Steve. I just happend to have the mini-fit connector in stock!

My game came with comet warm white LEDs throughout, they are just slightly too dim.

Ive replaced them with 2smd frosted sunlight and that seems to be a perfect balance or warmth and brightness.

Most of the #67 flashers were burned out, I replaced them with 5 LED #89 cool white flasher towers from Comet, it looks perfect.

Im planning a full over the top resto on this.

Has anyone sourced the backbox edge trim? Mine is good but is showng signs of wear.

#1578 2 years ago
Quoted from sven:

Isn't that a reflexion?

Nope. Wear.

Sadly instead of soldering the broken wire from the center kicker target back on, and switching to free play in tournament mode:

Some prior person decided to drill a hole in a pretty nice coin door to add a credit switch.

They actually did a decent job on it although totally unnecessary.

Its only a 1/4" hole and should fill in just fine, but still...

I laughed at the wooden blanking cover in the door!

But I have a couple coin controls doors for parts from my IJ restos.

So, its an easy fix for me, but the parts are pretty rare.

Doesn't look like you need a new playfield at all!

#1582 2 years ago
Quoted from Charles_Kline:

Doesn't look like you need a new playfield at all!

Its not too bad.

Persistance paid off and I got a pretty nice game from a fellow pinsider.

It can be touched up a bit, theres a little planking that you barely notice, but Im very happy with it for now.

Still I tend to fully over-the-top restore all the games that I keep.
So, Ill buy the playfield and plastics when they comes out.

Im trying to track down a new translite right now.

I already bought the colorDMD LCD version. I might put it in my IJ and do the LED version on this game. It might fit it better.

#1583 2 years ago

LCD fits fine in Stargate. Screen lays on top of the foam that surrounds the original DMD.

This is good to know, I havent even looked at it yet.

today I working on a non destructive repair for the broken left metal ramp.

Maybe Kerry Stair will make us up some new ramps?

#1585 2 years ago

Non destructive ramp repair for now ( I believe this has been done before):

Find 1" x 1" angle clips at the hardware store.
20211221_145705 (resized).jpg20211221_145705 (resized).jpg

Remove a little metal with a drill or dremel or saw:

20211221_145711 (resized).jpg20211221_145711 (resized).jpg

Bend it past 90 degrees to about 110 degrees:
20211221_145715 (resized).jpg20211221_145715 (resized).jpg

Remove 3 acorn nuts and the plastic.

Remove the rubber by rolling it up.

Loosen the middle star post a bit and slip the bracket under it.
20211221_145905 (resized).jpg20211221_145905 (resized).jpg

Push the bracket over until the broken ramp side is where you want it.

Tighten the star post down, add back the plastic, rubber and acorn nuts.

Admire your work!
20211221_145844 (resized).jpg20211221_145844 (resized).jpg

This plays perfectly and will hold up until my restoration, or I get the ramp welded and plated.

That...... Is a damn good fix! I might keep it in place even after a re-weld. Looks better than my current nerf ammo fix.

Coin control doors are really difficult to source. I only have some parts.

Suzo/Happ's website has tons of parts and Steve at http://www.pbresource.com/ has most of what you might need.

You can call them and see if he has a used coin door.

Yep, it looks factory and its very solid.

The ball flies up the ramp with little trouble now, even on somewhat weak shots.

My plan is also to keep it on place after it gets welded for a permanent support.

#1590 2 years ago

I took my ramps out, had a friend weld both, were broken. Lay a wet rag on the decals. They are not available any more. As far as I know.

Good tip on the wet rag!

The daniel decal seems to be elusive, I can make one if needed.

But there are a lot of decals in the set still at pinball resource:

#1592 2 years ago

I bought a welder and taught myself to weld just to fix that ramp.
Glad I did. I've fixed a couple other pinball parts since, and done a few non-pinball repairs around the house as well. I'm not comfortable enough to risk working on someone else's ramps though.... If you're not careful you can burn through and make an ugly mess. I think someone posted a pic in this thread of a "bad" welding job.

Found my first oddball hacky repair!

Evidently a post broke off and they couldnt get a rubber on it when using #6 long screws from the top.

Ding, ding ,Ding! I know, lets use a nylon tie! Its perfect!

I thought about this a bit and decided that a more robust post might be needed, since it's right next to the pop bumper.

I pushed out the 6-32 t-nuts with a gentle tap of a hammer and a center punch.

Drilled out the playfield very slightly with a 15/64 bit to fit a 8-32 t-nut:

20211222_144808 (resized).jpg20211222_144808 (resized).jpg

I set the 2 t-nuts using a 8-32 allen screw and a washer as a puller. It pulled up nice and snug.

The posts had to be drilled out very slightly to accomodate the larger 8-32 post. A 11/64" bit is the perfect fit and removes almost no material:
20211222_144510 (resized).jpg20211222_144510 (resized).jpg

Perfect fit for the new larger post:
20211222_144557 (resized).jpg20211222_144557 (resized).jpg

Now its simple to install the new posts and put a nice new rubber ring on it:
20211222_145328 (resized).jpg20211222_145328 (resized).jpg

The metal cover had to be slightly drilled out for the #8 posts:

20211222_145850 (resized).jpg20211222_145850 (resized).jpg

With an actual rubber instead of a nylon tie, Im getting a TON more action off the pops!

Not too bad of a repair, it took about 20 mins in all.

But, I have all the tools and a few spare parts in my shop... Your mileage may vary, as always...

#1597 2 years ago

I bought a rubber kit from pbresource.com.

Its really perfect. I especially liked that the upper flipper rubber was urethane and the lowers were regular black rubber.

(My game came with standard Williams flipper rubber (poorly draped over the flipper notches) and it played terribly).

The upper flipper rubber from the kit, with the harder urethane, "smacks" the ball hard! It easily goes up the ramp.

All if the rubbers fit perfectly and I have had no trouble at all.

The care and attention to detail is what keeps me coming back to pbresource.com.

I removed all the warm white LEDs and replaced them with 2smd frosted sunlight. It has brightened the game up considerably without being garish.

However the lane quides, drop target, horus guard, and the ship LEDS were too bright!
I replaced those with 1 SMD frosted sunlight and I think they are "spot on".

Im having a blast with my first gottlieb game.

Its fun and easy to work on and everything makes sense unlike a lot of my Williams games.

Stargate is an amazing game! I cant wait to get the parts together for an "over-the-top" restoration.

Its gonna be EPIC!

Next, Ill start Molexing and cleaning mechs.

Please make both. That way they will look better as a matching set. Also, I would like to say. If you can makes nice decals that size. I would also be interested. If the art work was even done differently or something else. Yes, the originals are nice too. Translight would be nice too.
