I'm not sure how much they paid Pat Lawlor to do the "unlicensed" theme of DI but the fact of the matter is that, like it not, the actual license itself on Star Wars, probably not cheap, is part of the BOM.
That gets passed on to us consumers in one form or another. Stern does "licensed" themes because the demand is MUCH higher. And Star Wars will be through the roof outside of Pinside. The PRO should be a routers dream.
If you listen to the Jersey Jack interview the profit margin/loss is obviously largely based on Unit sales and JJP has MUCH less margin for error to have a dud.
Woz ended up costing JJP $7k per unit, being built over a 29 month period.
Every unit they sell there are variable costs, COGS and fixed overhead, the more units they sell the bottom line looks better and better obviously because the fixed overhead is spread out over more units. Hence, you have to keep the production line rolling.
While its a factor, I would never buy a pin just because the BOM is higher.
