Quoted from Hazoff:

I wish I could believe that but I don't, why not say I prefer DI or "for me its not even close" an obvious shot at SW which is fine but to me stupid because its just insulting to everyone that has SW.

C'mon...implicit in everyone's response is "For me". You just don't like "this vs. that" threads, which is cool. I own SWLE and don't find random OPINION's insulting. Someone else said DI is for girls...not a politically correct response, but I wasn't about to question my manhood

#52 6 years ago

Sorta reminds me of the “best designer” (Lawlor vs. Richie) debates on RGP in the mid 90’s. Two geniuses doing their style of great work then and now.

#53 6 years ago

Two great examples of excellent pins by two of the premier designers for the last 3+ decades each with their own distinctive style.

#54 6 years ago
Quoted from Hazoff:

Once again with this horseshit, the 2 pins are so different its strictly a matter of personal taste. I like SW but can see how others would go with DI, does that mean DI is better than SW or vice versa? all that happens with these threads is that you end with stupid comments like this.

I’ve played both many times. This is a forum to speak. My choice is DILE if I was picking and it’s not close. I cant have my opinion?

#55 6 years ago

I have a Star Wars premium and love it. I just installed Pinstadium lights with GI and flasher option, and now I love it even more, seriously, that lighting mod is truly awesome! The game is fast, fun and seriously addictive. I get enjoyment out of it every single time I play, and I don't think I'm going to be getting tired of it anytime soon. Also, I can't wait to see what Stern puts out with the new code. I don't think there will be that much more to add, but I'm still anxiously awaiting.

That said, I am lucky enough to also have a Dialed In LE on the way to the house sometime soon. Thank you to my wife who, despite how crazy expensive these machines have become, understands that pinball is just good medicine. I've had the chance to play an unlimited amount DI, and it is also fantastic. Completely different. No similarities at all between these 2 games with the exception that they are both pinball machines, have flippers and use pinballs
We are painfully lucky these days to have such amazing machines to choose from. If having to choose between one or the other, I really don't think one could go wrong, but individual taste has to be considered, as not every pin is for everyone. I know there's games out there that a lot of people really love that are not so fun for me, and vice versa. But I think as it relates to this forum choice, these are 2 really great pins from recent days from 2 highly-skilled designers with long successful careers and these 2 games are going to give a lot of people a lot of joy for a long time to come.

Good job, it's a fun one. Go into the adjustments and deal with the right scoop if you have to...it can be a little too powerful.

Wow; thanks for your brilliantly sexist contribution to what’s been an otherwise interesting discussion...

Honestly ... I don't see where this is sexist. Haven't you seen the emoticon in his message ?
Neither do I see why a thread eject is necessary for this remark.

It's like saying that dolls are intended for girls, and then getting grilled by the LGTB-community because you didn't include them.
If he would have said that it was for typical big-breasted, blond-haired dumbass bimbo's that only know how to play the manflute and just like to be grabbed by the pussy by filthy rich dirty old men ... then I would have understood. Really, some of you over-the-top-politically-correct geezers need to take a chill-pill.

PS: Choose the red pill & not blue, I hear blue is viagra & that's not for you girls

I think both are great games and also completely different.

I'll admit this, I was wrong about Star Wars, at least the premium and LE. I knocked the game a lot early on. I still think more features could have been added
across all models but Stern did knock it out of the park in terms of getting the licensing right and that's extremely important considering today's NIB prices. To get access to all of the original trilogy's video assets, actor audio (especially the main actors) and even some licensed music tracks is impressive (most impressive? lol). The pro version of the game feels a bit barren but the premium version really surprised me. The hyperloop toy is really cool as is the Death Star toy considering its limited use makes it have more of an impact when you actually see it in action. The "use the force" ball save is also a nice feature and falcon model that lights up is a nice touch.

What helped change my mind about Star Wars and led me to buying a HUO LE is the code development and the ruleset design. The code has come a long way since launch, has become very deep and there's multiple ways to now approach the game. The ability to turn off mode stacking and enjoy each mode by themselves is a nice option as well. I think Lord of the Rings has one of the best rulesets of all time thanks to it having multiple objective based goals being spread throughout the game. Not many many games have successfully pulled that off since then but I think Star Wars does very well. Overall excellent game that only continues to get better with each code release.

Couldn't of said it better myself.....a few years from now SW Premium/LE will be considered a classic in the same realm as LOTR.

I agree and once the last of the disappointed SW geeks gets past the world under the glass crap and that the DE version is superior they will realize how great this pin is and how much justice it does to the franchise. If ur a SW fan and passing on this game then u r a fool, lightsaber mode and Boba Fett alone are worth the price of admission, oh yeah.

I think these “vs” threads are very helpful, even if I agree they rarely solve the debate - it’s a matter of preference! I’m presently considering buying a SW Premium vs. Dialed In, and I’m torn. But I already own a WOZ, and that feels like a slower, more toy-based game already, like DI. Also, I LOVE the original Star Wars movies, and I’m not as sure about the DI theme. So, if I add a SW, I’ll have a faster game with a theme I know and love. Plus, I’ve already started buying all the mods for SW...kinda clinches it for me! Is there an easier game ever made to buy cool mods for than SW??? I’m adding a Han in carbonite, an At-At, a storm trooper and a Boba Fett. Plus flipper bats and a few other standard mods. Maybe DI next year???

#67 6 years ago

SW premium - I find DI to be a snoozer and feels clunky to me.

Different strokes for different folks!

Edit - interesting stat added

Both games came out June 2017 and as of today 267 dialed in owners on pinside and 271 Star Wars premium/LE owners on pinside.

I just traded my Dialed In LE for an ASLE after about a month of ownership. I thought DILE played great and the SIM card collection for mode multipliers was a great rule. However it felt like there was way too much emphasis on the phone aspects (selfies, emojis, etc) than on the disasters. In the end, as much as I tried, I just couldn't get into the theme. It's a great game if you like the theme and its presentation.

In other thread related news, my Star Wars Premium is being delivered today (upgrading from my original Pro model).

#70 6 years ago

I would personally go with dialed in but it's about personal taste in my opinion

I'm debating buying SW; I have played Pro and Premium on location. Leaning towards buying Premium. Perhaps you can post your thoughts on Premium vs. Pro after you get some time on your new game in one of the SW threads. Thanks and enjoy your new game.

Yah I was just in the same boat. At the last minute I switched to DI LE from a SW Prem.

The main thing that convinced me one way or the other was sitting down and watching tutorial game play for each. Ultimately I felt that the SW Prem I wanted was really geared towards tournament play. Really geared. So probably guys really focused on that, or just want a piece of awesome SW furniture go that way.

Then I watch the same on DI LE. It was fun, amusing, easier to understand. I have a 9y/o and 5 y/o. And we're a 1st time pin family. The DI comes across almost as a mini amusement park. Takes itself less seriously. And just seemed like a better game for the casual player.

Don't get me wrong - I'm a hardcore SW fan, and if the SW game had the same "fun factor" to me and less emphasis on being a serious league game I'd go that way. But as it is, I felt I would have less fun with it.

We're a one pin house for now. If we get a lot of use out of the $9K DI LE, then going to 2 is an option.

Sales wise - I would think SW would ultimately kill a DI LE in overall sales. You just can't compete with a license like that. And 90% casual players prob don't dig deep enough to discover what DI LE is all about. I totally rejected it the first week of looking into this because I'm 1) Disgusted by drones (yah a snobby RC Heli pilot, that thinks dummy drone pilots are ruining RC), 2) My kids are just saturated with phones, screens, emoji's etc and I hate to have a game that reinforces that.

Star Wars better game more blood pumping action

#76 6 years ago

Dialed In by a long mile for quality, depth, and a smooth and fun shooting game (theme however is just ok and better once you get to know it) and I owned both - SW premium - great theme that could have easily been titled "No Fear in Space". Yes it is fast, yes code is deep (tournament player deep) and for the 1% that can actually blow up the death star as the secondary toy that no one ever interacts with - good on ya It is in my opinion an unfortunate incredible wasted opportunity in application of theme, immersion and just a very overpriced box of lights and video in terms of value for the dollars spent! But, hey it does have pop bumpers so that's......something, oh and lest we forget a tie fighter......wait for it...........on a spring! Flame suit on! lol

I pick on SW in jest so always, always, play before you buy and go with what speaks to your style of play, makes you smile, and sparks your interest in pinball best and you can never go wrong

#77 6 years ago

Objectively DI is the winner by miles. But - for me personally - it is just not fun to play this machine. The only "real thing" are the SIM cards. Modes are good, multiballs are more punishment than reward for achievements, especially pointwise. You play one minute - 100k, play five minutes 500k... only exception, get SIM cards, so that you have a multiplier for the modes. Don't get me wrong, not only points matter, but - points are rewarding... I need this rewarding feeling during the games. But as stated - my very personal opinion. Two more comments - even on max. power the flippers seem pretty weak compared to the current Stern machines. Lightning is awesome (much better than on Sterns).

Star Wars - what a theme and what a disappointment... who needs 40x, who needs the design flaws (fork ramp, hyperloop) and who needs this unispired layout? Those were thoughts... until i bought a Pro for price I couldn't skip. Oh man, what - literally - what a lightweight, also in terms of quality and playfield "population".

BUT - after some games and more knowledge about what to do and when to do it... this machine is a blast, it rocks, it's super fun. Why... soundtrack is great, it flows but still it is a shooter and most importantly it has the special moments, the rewarding moments. Having 40x while destroying the Death Star or getting a hyperspace up or... is so much more rewarding than everything I saw on DI. The speed, the brutal force - awesome. You have to be focussed all the time keeping your multipliers alive and in the correct position. This really adds another level in gameplay - like it or not, for me it's great.

I sold my DI after two weeks, I also sold my SW Pro after 4 weeks. But the only reason to sell the Pro at this time was to upgrade to a Premium. Well adding extra cash also adds the already mentioned design flaws. Why should you do this? Well, it seems the "flaws" were at least minimized with the code updates AND I wrote about the special moments - the go to shot is the left inner loop shot which is on a premium/LE not anymore the inner loop, but it feeds the Death Star/Hyperloop by the fork ramp so you can enjoy these moments much more. Getting a 1.8b hyperspace hurry up results in a short break in which you can enjoy the animation and the achievement. On a Pro the ball fires back so quickly, you may often have not even the time to check how many points you got

Both are outstanding machines, but it depends on your pesonal preferences... SW Rock'n'Roll - DI hmmm maybe Jazz.
Some weird thoughts, I know

Dude you freakin nailed it on the head! Exactly how I feel.

I love DI and enjoy it immensely. But, the dynamic scoring steve ritchie + Dwight offer in their games (SW + GOT) with the equally as good breadth in the rules gives these games such fun rewarding moments. It’s not just about seeing bigger scores, which is an argument I hear a lot, but it’s about dynamic scoring! - being able to go about different ways to hit big jackpots; i.e. can I do it with hyperspace hurry up, or bubba fet, Death Star, light saber duel, or simply just blow up a multiball + mode stack. Variety and breadth.

WOZ sort of offers this kind of dynamic scoring but it’s via end of ball bonus which isn’t as exciting as doing it during gameplay (but is still cool to see, just not as cool). Dialed in does have these elements too (better than WOZ in my opinion) with Big Bang and Sim Cards and I feel are implemented very well - hitting Big Bang with jackpots and a mode lit, or building the SIM cards and blowing up a disaster mode, etc...But still, SW + GOT are on another level...when it comes to dynamic scoring + breadth.

Integration and immersiveness, as well as attention to detail; and to me the custom call outs - Dialed in wins. Can’t lose with either game, just pick to your preferred style of Pinball.

Above 2 posts really I think strengthens my opinion that SW is a great "tournament" game, where mastering ways to achieve high scores adds a lot of depth to playing in those situations.

But that scoring depth and complexity is what ultimately sent me away as a casual gamer wanting a super fun long lasting pin. It's great they went for making the ultimate modern tournament machine. But as all of you have said the open fast layout looses a lot of the mass appeal that would perhaps have attracted more to it.

Anyway - maybe this was the vision from the start. Or maybe after the public reaction to it, they changed gears and focused on making it a great tournament machine.

This thread was helpful to help me choose what's best for me. If I fall in love with the hobby, I could see getting a SW to seriously develop skill. Maybe it will be one of the best to practice with.

Quoted from OnTheSnap:

I get a little sick of hearing this because it immediately infers the game cannot be fun or long lasting if you're juts playing the modes; which isn't true.

I am not a tournament player, and average player overall at my best. SW is great fun, and for me much more enjoyable than DI. If the concept of moveable multipliers is too complex, then just don't use them. There are a lot of things to do with the pin beyond maximizing score, and the way the characters and modes are setup you can approach the game multiple different ways.

Put another way, if there weren't moveable multipliers, the game would still be full of great shots, modes, wizard modes, great video, sound, music, etc. Just leave the multipliers alone and play, it is still a ton of fun. However if you are playing it competitively you'd better know the multipliers or you will get spanked.

Anyway - maybe this was the vision from the start. Or maybe after the public reaction to it, they changed gears and focused on making it a great tournament machine.

It's a Steve Ritchie design, and the "King of Flow" generally makes games that play quickly, which works well with an open layout. Dwight, who also coded GOT, makes games with deep (or if you dislike them, "overly intricate") rules, and has done so again with SW. So I'd guess that where SW ended up code and play wise is pretty much where they intended it to from the start.

Also, I wouldn't say SW is coded particularly to be a "tournament machine," but rather that you have to pay attention to the rules, and especially the multipliers, to really maximize your score. Whether that's fun for you or not is pretty subjective, and somewhat dependent on whether you're playing for score or to complete modes and advance through the game. I'm an average player but really enjoy SW. It doesn't hurt that I find the multiplier to be a ton of fun, adding a great risk/reward element to the game. But there's lots to go for beyond just 40x Hyperspace Shots -- lots of modes to complete and multiballs to pursue. Plus four characters that call for different approaches to the game due to how they're coded (and have different callouts, naturally).

Did you check the EOS switches and flipper shaft bindings? After dialing-in my Dialed In flippers, they are VERY strong (on the default power). So strong, that many of the shots needed to be dialed-in to accommodate the speed.

The difference between a NIB DI and a fully dialed-in DI can be dramatic. Unlike ST, the mechanical design of DI is much more complex and it seems like JJP manufacturing still has room for improvement.

I love both games. They are so wildly different yet brilliant in their own ways. ST is so difficult, that I expect to have a love/hate relationship with it. Some days I just want to sell it for kicking my arse so badly.

I think we've been seeing more Dialed In for tournaments than Star Wars, to be honest. There are very few "best for tournament" games out there, but there are plenty "unfit for tournament" games.

#85 6 years ago

Dialed In over Star Wars premium all day long. So much more to do so much more fun. A matter of fact I would take a Star Wars pro over a premium. Not sure what they were thinking about with that wire form in front of the flippers. What an eye sore.

All fair. I'm a total noob trying to pick my first home game. All I have is the videos posted demonstrating the game play. Watching sw unfold in the videos didn't look fun to me. And ended up redirecting me to a "theme" I liked less, but looked more "fun".

I'm the average consumer here with some money to burn. With no access to actually play either machine. So I just go by what you guys write and the videos I can find.

A lot of logic went into the thumbs up only world of Facebook. Now I just feel sad.

With kids involved DI is the easy choice. My daughter is only 19 months and she goes apeshit for DI. Crawls all over the glass like a maniac; they'll love it.
Best read up those DI threads because the thing has some issues usually fresh out of the box.
Enjoy!

Whilst sometimes true with Stern, SW is way past 50%

These games are side by side on location near me and dialed is such a snoozer compared to Star Wars premium/LE.

I don’t even think it is a close comparison and the SW code is probably 95% complete and deeper than deep!

I am slightly biased though as an owner.

It’s cool guys, he’s just trolling and/or hasn’t played SW since it launched. Anyone modestly familiar with the game knows that the code is real, and it’s spectacular.
