So, you can download the code for free from the Stern site and burn it yourself but if you want to buy the ROM from Chad it costs $50. And what's to keep other ROM sellers from selling it for less? I'm not understanding what happened here.

One would hope that the other rom sites will respect that Chad couldn't charge for the code and buying the ROM from him rewards the work that he did. The roms they burn for other games, the coders were paid by their respective companies. This was a labor of love and I think that it's appropriate that guys kick in a little. My guess is that Star Wars values will jump significantly more than $50 per game once the importance of the new code sinks in.
