I am making wireforms to replace the plastic ramps on Mandalorian Pro machines. This is the see it built thread. This is the way! Starting initial set today.

I will be selling them at Allentown pinfest. Posting the build as a timestamp as I go tonight. Left rail lower picture.

The spots where you slide the wireforms into the plastic ramp, is that plastic ledge the ramp sits on going to stress and break over time? Anyway to reinforce that?

#7 2 years ago

Definitely following.

#8 2 years ago

Any way to get on a list to buy a set at the Allentown show? Not sure how many you’d have ready to go by then but I’d love to get these.

I thought same thing. Checking that out. Would be easy to add a plate to even pressure. Stern should just sell the ramps. It looks way better and I am a moran doing it by hand. I want to make a basic set then a fancy set. This first attempt is to work out some things to get it down. The rails are flat bar welded at bottom which creates a narrower ball guide. The ones I have always made were half circle for deeper runs. The one ramp is low to playfield and I am guessing thats why these are narrow. The half moons would be too close to playfield. Stopping for today as I have to take care of my son. Brand new game and I have not even played it. I will with wireforms. The plastic ramps are just hideous. Not done with the left, but stopping at this point for today. The pro is a beautifull looking game. My wife wants the premium which we ordered. I bought this to see if I could make a nice set of pro ramps.

Hard to tell but looks like the premium may need the support as well.

BTW, yours looks great, Awesome Job!

You can see how low that right ramp sits to playfield so its tight. Going off pictures I see Stern has a blocker on upper part of the ramp that goes to left drop to keep the ball on track. Without it the ball goes right off it alot. I need to find that sweet spot. The one I tried kicked it to left. Kicking around ideas for it now. Will keep posting the good and bad until its done right. Using 1/16 stainless steel rods. Tricky to weld, but they look great when done and they wont rust and easy to clean and polish.

And I put on side armor for pinfest. Did not put screws in by buttons only the rails are tight to cab. I will be taking them off after the show. But, they actually look good. The machine is really beautifull in person. More then I expected.

I can do better on the ball drop and I will, but this first set is to get them down. I am doing this by hand so a machine would be crisper bends and welds.

Why not continue the "deflector section" all the way down to the ball drop? It would look more unified.

Stern put a smaller deflector. I could not get that sweet spot so I started it at ramp and down rail. It works great.

Wow, really impressive work. When I played a pro, I was disappointed by how certain inserts were really hard to see/read because of the clear ramps, so this is an amazing improvement to have available.

Making new left ball drop guide adding whistling birds on top. I bought new tungsten rods and they are not as good as the ones I need. Going to do this again with less rockets. I like the idea, but working it out.9

Yeah but stern's is to catch the ball dropping from the right ramp.. you're dealing with falls just due to the orientation/shape of your rails.

Agree, cool idea but would block sight in a critical area

I put the ramp on without the wall and more than half of the shots the ball flew off track onto playfield. This set is just for my machine. I agree with blocking view its too much. The ones I am trying to sell will be basic without any artistic crap on them, just decent wireforms. I am shooting for ten sets for pinfest. I have 3 people interested at this point. So we will see if theres more. I just have to figure out the materials and time for a price. I have to see, but $100 or less is my goal. I will install and play test every set I make.

#26 2 years ago

I have followed you other posts on your projects. I think you are getting a bit to artistic on the habitrails. For your own sake and and your customers, keep it like Stern would do it.
based on your initial test, they will turn out nicely and you will sell one set for each pro.

Making guides and going to make all the shapes then weld together. Going assembly line style thinking it will save time. I will post these in market place soon. The few that asked first will get these sets. I need to bring a bunch to pinfest. So unless I really bang out a bunch thinking the first 5 can be shipped out. After that I want to bring the rest to pinfest. If I sell everyone made I will be making them as requested from there out. Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. The game is great, better then I expected. Finally a great star wars game has been made!

If that's real and not a photshop for a marketing mockup....Stern has somehow managed to cut even more corners than before by removing the little metal plate that's typically riveted on to prevent cracking, and instead just extending the ramp body down and drilling the holes to insert the wireform. /facepalm

I can’t see that decision faring well down the road…

It's really a question of how thick it is. The thicker, the better, and less prone to cracking, but still...it just seems cheap.

Pretty sure this is not new... plus, it's not like we haven't been just screwing ramps together forever either.

Please let me get this process settled. I am not done making two sets yet. I am close. But I might have to bump up the $90 price to cover my time. I will nail it down soon. Just give me a few days to lock down exact price. I am not looking to get rich at all. I put a stop watch on theses to track it.

Marco/Stern is charging something like $330+ for the set, so anything lower is an improvement.

Don't sell yourself short. People pay asinie prices for mods that are basically toys and decorations whereas this is a functional mod that improves line sight of the ball. When I played the pro on location I thought those clear ramps were horrible and blocked the view of the PF. I don't mind plastic ramps along the side of the PF but when they start to cross they should be wireforms.

Surface is smooth and ball drops are also smooth. Should not be a problem.

Yes sterns are chrome plated. Which is why its so expensive. Stainless steel is easy to clean and polish to a good shine. But, if you want chrome plated forms the Stern is the way to go. I have wireforms on my Discovery machine for a year now and they have not created any issues. I love the game, they did a great job at Stern. I knew I could make them and wanted to see how they looked and figured I would see if anyone else would be interested. I am shocked at the list of people I have gotten in two days.
