Quoted from CrazyLevi:

Man is that a stretch. Virtually ALL modern layouts bear some resemblance to another game. And the ones that don't usually suck.

Which is why Stern needs to abandon the fan going forward and design more flippers - otherwise the layout is boring as hell. If you own five Stern tables - each with 2 flippers in a fan layout using an Italian bottom, then you probably have four pins too many. As my wife says, "they all look alike". And I'd have to partially agree. No need to keep buying new, more expensive releases with the same old same old. If Stern wanted to copy something, they should look back over the history of pinball to choose something more interesting. Better yet, copy a layout from Zen Pinball. They have released 65 tables with at least 20 of them having a better layout than SW. (hint - not many of them are 2 flipper games).

3 out of my 17 pins are Stern, 2 flipper / fan layouts (LOTR, ACDC and MET). I enjoy them but can only stand so much of the same. Also have 3 Bally/Williams 2 flipper / fan layouts in my collection (Centaur, BSD and AFM). I am not buying any more of those regardless of the brand!

Quoted from CrazyLevi:

Why do people call it an "italian Bottom" when it was invented in Chicago?

Chicago is a mecca for good Italian food. Also home of (maybe) the deep dish pizza. I have no idea why it is called Italian bottom.
