My Star Trip has been having weird sound problems. Sound works fine but there is an annoying background whine.

According to http://www.pinrepair.com/gp/#misc (section 3i) random sound weirdness can be a sign that the MPU board's .01 mfd (103) 16 volt ceramic capacitor is having problems.

I searched for a .01 mfd (103) and purchased these guys: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GN0QRW

however even though they say they are 103's they are significantly different looking (very tiny, about 1/8" across - much smaller than the picture looks) and make no mention of number of volts. Now I am wondering if I got the right ones and thought I would ask before I fire up the soldering iron.

caps are cool in that if you have access to the leads on the old cap you can clip the new cap to those leads and test it out

Since that cap is for timing i would get a NP0 / C0G cap as they are precise caps that do not drift. The film / polyester caps are pretty stable too. The cap pictured on pinrepair looks like a +/- 20% tolerance general ceramic.

"Especially, NP0/CG/C0G capacitors with an α ±0•10−6 /K and an α tolerance of 30 ppm are technically of great interest. These capacitors have a capacitance variation dC/C of ±0.54% within the temperature range −55 to +125 °C. This enables accurate frequency response over a wide temperature range (in, for example, resonant circuits)."

You can try the caps you got and see if it changes or fixes your problem. The ones in your link are just general purpose ceramic caps. They tend to be +/- 20% in accuracy and the capacitance may change if the board heats up.

thanks for the info guys. and thanks for the link, those ones I purchased from Amazon are about $1 each. Not a big deal since I only got 5 but still, these better ones are $0.40 each.
