My Stern Star Trek is HUO and has had relatively low plays. I've had it over a year and just recently the upper flipper started to stick in the up position on occasion. It sometime pops down after a few seconds but sometimes stays up longer. It does not happen with every flip but fairly often. When I inspect the flipper with the power off and move it manually it moves very freely, with nothing binding at all and I can't get it to stick in the coil.

My question is whether this could be an issue with the coil or something other than a simple mechanical issue. What should I test to determine the issue?

Thanks!

When it is stuck up quick turn the game off. Still stuck - mechanical issue. Something is binding. And when you move it with your finger is a little different than the coil pulling it.

I'd inspect the coil sleeve and pawl linkage. And see that the bracket holding the coil and the coil stop are straight and not leaning in and out.

Also check if the part of the coil stop going into the coil is loose. ( I'd bet on that one )

Thanks LTG - great idea. The test proved it is indeed mechanical. Time to dig in and figure it out!
