I had the same problem with my STTNG. I cleaned all the opto's with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol, that helped for about 6 months. One day I was having the game of a life time and sure $hit the thing starts acting up again 
. I just gave up and replaced both boards... never had a problem since.
