STTNG being fully restored in every aspect as a 6 month project. This one was very tatty before the restoration (and I meant really tatty) and I think it is such a great pinball machine that it deserved a complete nut and bolt restoration. The project is still ongoing and being undertaken by PH UK. One of the best pins from the 90's I always had a soft spot for this especially as it was in parallel with the TV & Films which I watched. I will post more pics when they come in and also some of the finished item. Worth every penny for me

This restoration is using a reproduction playfield so here is the original and the repro side by side. I have a poll going on this specific issue.

On another note what is your opinion on have the inside of the cabinet and backbox sprayed black rather than natural (as it would have been when new)?

It seems common for restoration projects to spray the inside of both boxes. Feedback most welcome.

I personally like the look of the black sprayed cab and backbox. But each to their own. If you don't like it, then do it the way you want to. It is your game.

I've not done a cabinet repaint yet but I likely will this summer on my Mata Hari. I've seen other Mata Hari restoration threads where they've painted the inside of the cab and tumble polished the metal bits and it came out really nice. It's inspired me to do the same when I get to the point of trying my hand at painting. Do what you like your what you think you'd like!

I think black inside will be the option, we will see how it goes.

Interesting on the Mata Hari and the polished metal bits. This is one from the UK (for sale on a website) and the polished bit on this look impressive.

Wiring loom going on update on the STTNG

STTNG cabinet coming on nicely. Smaller Stern leg cabinet spacers going on to protect the cabinet artwork when the legs finally go on. With great care a small cut around each one with a scalpel to prevent rippling/bubbling up when the legs go on and have movement for the next years of its life. Leg wear on older pins has to be one of the saddest things to occur over time as it could have been avoided back in the day with a better engineered solution. My MB has great cabinet artwork in first class condition, but the leg area was so perished to a point of getting new decals, which is always a shame on a classic pin. So putting on these small spacers is recommended to all rather than the larger plastic/metal spacers that stick outside the leg.

Time for LED's going into the boards, I am interested in feedback on LED's and brightness levels, Too bright or the warm glow of incandescent. Any input on LED options especially from STTNG owners who have done a complete light replacement please post a reply.

Looking great! On the topic of lighting, I chose to go with cool white GI and color-matched inserts. I think it turned out great. If you use regular brightness and flex bulbs for some of the inserts they'll be plenty bright enough.

Please please please do not ruin the beautiful colors on this game by putting a bunch of blue or purple lights in the GI.

Thanks for the lighting input, it will be trial and error for me on the lights and to be honest I may change this over time to experiment. I am a fan of getting the most out of the colours and I will see how we look when we launch

Also note that Comet sells a “daylight” color LED, which is warmer than the cool white bulbs. It’s not as harsh as the cool white and still keeps the colors more true to the game’s original design. Nicer on the eyeballs too

Actually called Sunlight unless there's a different one I've never seen, I do like them a lot for GI and Backboxes though I guess I can see the cool white being preferred for space themes. I'd also recommend the LED and GI OCD boards for this game since you're doing a full restore, maintains that nice fading and GI dimming of the shields, etc.

STTNG Cabinet Right Hand Side pre and post restoration - Cabinet striped back to wood, sanded, filled, and painted with new decals applied - Chrome side rails fitted along with new legs powder coated black. New leg bolts and a protective nylon washer for good measure and of course new flipper buttons. One of the best tips I ever had was putting a modern Stern metal leg protector in place as a buffer for the leg against the cabinet. This is a must for any restoration project.

STTNG Cabinet front pre and post restoration - New coin door, decals and cabinet repairs to make the whole front smooth with no imperfections. You will see the impact of the chrome plates lock bar. If anyone is eagle eyed you will spot a slight different in the decal detail. No explanation for this but maybe inspect the decal areas before application. So being critical I can see two issues in total, I wonder if you can also.

STTNG Cabinet Left Hand Side pre and post restoration - Cabinet striped back to wood, sanded, filled, and painted with new decals applied - Chrome side rails fitted along with new legs powder coated black. New leg bolts and a protective nylon washer for good measure and of course new flipper buttons.

You can see on the pre restoration image the normal wear and tear, after all this was a 1993 build so over 25 years of action which is shown on this image.

A visitor who saw the new restoration this week asked me if this was a brand new pin! Restoring a STTNG was never about the resale value for me, it was about having an iconic machine looking and playing as best it could be and do.

The back box with a brand new original translite, it took me ages to find this one, the original one was very perished with tippex repairs covering up holes and loads of scratches, but it still allowed for direct light to come through. The replacement had its original plastic cover sheet on and could have been the last one on earth as a new in box. A tip for anyone with the backglass and translite to to never allow the white back face come into contact with anything. The front is glass and new translite just sits on top of this. If the white element gets scratched or worn it will perish and let the light through. This is less of an issue for later pins as (MB, MM etc) as they had a plastic cover on them by then.

Oh and there is a new Colour DMD Replacement thrown in for good measure. STTNG is such a colourful pin across the playfield with so much going on I think a colour DMD (sorry UK spelling) is a good thing to do to match the vibrant playfield action.

STTNG Playfield - Everything was stripped back and either replaced or re-conditioned or rebuilt. The playfield was a total loss, so a replacement was used. All metal elements (not nuts and bolts) were shot-blasted and either polished or chromed. Dont get too hung up on replacing plastic playfield parts with new ones on a restoration, the playfield is a battlezone and parts will break and perish all of the time. Everything on the playfield is now classed as "NIB"

I am a fan of mirror blades and side art, I notice that JJP have only just started doing this on their very last pin on the CE version (side art), Stern have been doing it for a while now on LE versions. So any restoration with mirror blades is a must (or artwork if I can get it), maybe not sure purest after all!

I can post shots of the original playfield, it was totally dead and dull with lots of elements very worn.

Nice work! It looks really good.

Where did you purchase the cabinet decals?

STTNG back box circuit boards - Generally speaking a massive clean up of everything in here and everything checked. I am a fan of labels and original stickers as it helps retain the original look and feel of the pin. I think this area is the hardest to restore fully with all elements removed and put back 100% as there are a lot of sensitive elements in this area.

STTNG colour DMD - Pre (second image) and post (first image) restoration and a big clean up of everything with some replacement parts in the plastics area to help tidy everything up and make it look as new as possible. I will change the battery tray later as one of my final tasks.

Stunning!!!

STTNG Labels - Always a good thing to keep on a restoration if possible. The manufacturers tag showing date of manufacture and serial number. I have shown the playfield underside earlier in my posts and this was rebuilt on a jig.

STTNG - So now for the final images showing the main presentation in its full glory. Not sure what it would be worth, but I think it is a worthy pin to restore with great gameplay and some really good features. It looks great also and it was a pleasure to have this one restored and a worthy one for any collection or anyone. 1993 was an era which saw plenty of coins being chucked into these and many more. My games are now free but the money is spent on restorations rather than the coin box!

Hi Thanks for the message. The decals were sourced in the UK from Nipper Pinball Cabinet Restorations, going by the website address http://www.ukpinball.com/

Good for you! This game seems to get lost in all the conversations / threads. It is a great game for any era.

STTNG Playfield glass had invisiglass as the final addition to reduce the glare from external room lighting.

Video of the finished STTNG is found at the ink below. I will get a landscape version up at some stage. All comments and feedback welcome.

Just an update on aftermarket playfields vs original and one obvious difference visible when installed, uploaded due to a recent request.

The TAG number is another one but you do not see that when installed etc.

Top is Aftermarket

Bottom is Original

Mirco repro's are the same (no TAG number). I sent my new Mirco to Ron Kruzman to get properly cleared, and he's putting on a proper TAG label before laying down the clear even tho no one will really see it. Looking to get the playfield back this summer and start the restoration. I plan on using your STTNG restoration thread, lexi , for help and guidance (thanks in advance!).
