I’m looking to get a pin either a Star Trek pro or a Dialed In se.
It will be in a 2 pin collection next to a 300 em.
It’s what I have room for.
The Star Trek pro vault is in pretty good shape, just a little wear behind the vengeance and usual shooter lane wear.

The DI looks like it’s in pretty good condition with a few mods.

Just looking for a little advice from people who have owned those pins.

Thanks in advance.

Dialed In all the way. Star Trek is a lot of fun for sure, but Dialed In has more interesting rules and a less standard layout

#3 1 year ago

I’m a big Pat Lawlor and Ritchie fan. I don’t mind the theme in DI either.

#4 1 year ago

ST is the better theme and more fun. Our ST will never leave. Did not care for DI.

#5 1 year ago

I've had them both, and at one point in the same lineup. This is a tough choice, but you really should play them both to decide.
ST is arguably one of the best sterns of all time, and one of the best pro models at that. Game is a flow fest.

DI in my opinion is still JJP's best game and the only one that truly feels like a more classic B/W. If you can get past the theme, there is a really great playing and interesting game. The only downside is the SIM card shot which can be very difficult to hit when you want to (but there are some settings you can adjust in game to help deal with this)

DI feels built like a tank, where as a stern pro - especially ST will feel like a toy compared to it, no weight.

Either way this is a tough choice and I'd be happy with either. Play them if you can.

#6 1 year ago

It looks like you already own a Lawlor game that’s more fun than DI. ST is one of the most fun games Stern has done IMO. DI is probably the best JJP game but if you’re going for a 90s feel there are better 90s pins out there anyway.

Dialed In has an amazing layout but the theme killed it for me. I could not make a connection and it got stale quick. Star Trek is ok-feel like you kinda need to love the new movie/franchise. I personally would rather go STTNG. The cannons are awesome and it has basically same layout. The callouts and animations are also better-battling asteroid video mode gets really stale. The one thing I do like on my ST is the lightning quick warp ramp shots. Warp 1-Warp 2 Warp 3

#8 1 year ago

My thoughts were the same on the ST meaning that I kind of wanted to go with STTNG but I’m trying to go with something newer. Less working on it and more playing it.
I never saw any of the new ST movies but I loved STTNG show when I was younger.

The new movies weren't great. The actors were fine, but I really hate how they essentially created a new universe.

I've owned both, but ended up selling Star Trek. DI will never leave.

#10 1 year ago

It's a pretty standard SR vs a pretty standard PL. Super fast tight game vs a slower JJP.

Since you already own a Whirwind I say go with ST.

#11 1 year ago

Whirlwind is going to be leaving.

#12 1 year ago

Both great games. DI is the best JJP game by a country mile. Star Trek is also fun, but less replay value for me.

#13 1 year ago

DIALED IN

Then I say DI.

It will probably be harder to sell than ST I would assume, but whatever

#15 1 year ago

I’ve owned ST three times and still own it. Also own DI as well.

Both are great if this was a ST premium it’d be a closer race with the full color inserts. But to me a ST pro is a little bit less and so I’d give the slight edge to DI.

#16 1 year ago

I did think of the resale of the DI later on, but you have to play and enjoy what you like.

#17 1 year ago

Star Trek pro. I owned both and sold both. Dialed In is fun game but the theme is odd, no one ever played it but me as family and friends didn't understand the theme. There's a mode that always drained SDTM (Quantum Singularity or something) on mine regardless of tweaks. The drone shot area is a bit odd as well, that area becomes more lackluster as the mini drone motors break (common). Would I buy a Star Trek pro again? Fun game but I would want to get a premium at least.

Telling someone about Dialed In's theme. "It's a game about a magical cell phone and you have to stop these disasters with it". Here's the look on people's faces when I told them that.

I stopped buying games based on what others would play, because 99% of the time it's just me in the arcade playing these games. The kids would get excited for a theme, and be done with it after 2 days.

#20 1 year ago

Both are great games but DI has not only the edge, it's the best shooting JJP game available. There are very good deals to be found. Best of luck with your search

#21 1 year ago

I've owned both (at the same time) and I'd have to personally give the edge to ST. While I enjoyed DI, ST was just a fun pin to shoot and I never walked away frustrated. Good call outs, one of the best soundtracks (I installed the alternate soundtrack code, connected to an external sub...it would rattle things on the wall). I can't say I'm a Steve Ritchie fan of his layout style, but he got ST right - great flow and a fast pin. DI definitely had more toys and the theme never bothered me (like some people) and the DI rules are definitely deeper, but more than once I walked away from DI frustrated.

In the end, I liked both - two completely different types of pins. But overall, the edge goes to my ST Pro.

A major weakness with ST was that it was based on the new movies which never really developed a following. I feel they could hit it out of the park with this game if they remade it with an LCD and the original TV series with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. That said I'd still prefer it to DI because the theme and callouts on DI are painfully awful.

#24 1 year ago

New movies were complete shit & and assault on the legacy of TOS...but it doesn't really hurt the game much. DMD makes it better so you don't have to watch close ups of Chris Pines' lips the entire time

#25 1 year ago

ST is still a fun game. I just wish is was based on TOS and not the JJ Abrams garbage.

DI has a funky theme, but I still like it. The shots are great and I just have a good time playing it.

#26 1 year ago

Is STTNG a maintenance nightmare?
Anyone with experience on it?

#27 1 year ago

Both good games but Star Trek will always be an easier sell. And who wants to own a JjP game when the boards / computer goes tits up?

Not me.

#28 1 year ago

I vote DI. I also have owned both and ST Pro is great eventually selling it after getting Spider-Man (similar layout). DI is here to stay currently 2,600 plays. I’ve made some adjustments on DI to enhance play for my liking. I just love the DI modes so cool and engaging big advantage to me.
However in the end either is a very good choice.

Good luck

#29 1 year ago

Have owned a DI. Theme didn't bother me, but it just wasn't exciting. It didn't drag me back in for another game.

I've played ST, and even though the location treated it like a stepchild, it was still fun and exciting. I kept pushing START.

If it were me, I'd grab a ST Prem.

#30 1 year ago

Same price? DI all day. But ST is usually a good deal.

#31 1 year ago

DI is about 1400 cheaper than ST but is in better condition.

#32 1 year ago

Dialed In Babee! Complete masterpiece. Mine is bolted to the floor. Love the humor, art rules, great flow, not linear in rule set never gets old.

Not me.

JJP's appear more serviceable then a modern Stern (no node boards). We've never really heard of any wide spread issues with JJP computer boards (besides the early WOZ light boards from 10 years ago). Look at all the Rush premium / LE owners node 10 board issues. Nothing like that has happened with JJP's.

#34 1 year ago

Also my impression. In fairness, ST doesn’t have node boards. I have often wondered how interchangeable the motherboard is in the JJP games.

#35 1 year ago

I just remember hearing stuff about the WOZ and that was all I heard on the boards too.

$1400 cheaper than an ST Pro?
Easy choice, go with DI

I said that wrong ST is 1400 cheaper than the DI.

#39 1 year ago

I'll be honest, I've just about had it with the lack of respect Dialed In receives. That game is so effing terrific. Sure, I wish multiball scoring was more meaningful, and that sim card shot is too tight, but the game is terrific beyond those nit picks.

And this isn't an owner trying to hype his game up because, sadly, I don't own one. I will again one day.

#40 1 year ago

Something else. Dialed In get's old after awhile just like Star Trek Pro. I'd rather put money in on location. I don't even know what else to suggest other than wait for another game.. If your getting a 5500 dollar deal go for the lesser priced game. Eventually you will sell so it doesn't really matter. TNA is better than both of these.

this kind of applies to any game - except the games in ones own collection for which this does not apply. DI is in my collection and it is one of those exceptions. Great modes and delightful humor.

I could imagine this as an original cast of Star Trek 2 wrath of Kahn. The vengeance being redone to the USS Reliant and going from there. God would I buy that immediately.

ST is SAM.

Theme is all anyone cares aboot these day. And by Theme I mean super heroes or music.

I forgot to say but SW is also excellent!!!!

Star Trek does not have node boards.

it's a very simple system that I am comfortable and familiar with, as its basically 30 years old.

JJPs aren't. I've tried to service a few non booting JJP games (including a hobbit) and I had no idea what to do. Apparently the Hobbit needed a keyboard plugged into it?

Just my personal level of comfort. I - personally, me - do not want to own the JJP when something bizarre happens to it.

Whatever works for you works for you.

If it wasn't for the phone, I'd probably vote dialed in. But there is something about a phone in a pinball machine that just bugs me (I'm looking at you as well Batman66).

So I'm going with Star Trek Pro (yes, I own one). It may be a standard layout, but overall I find the game to be a blast. Putting the movie soundtrack version on it makes the sound much better (as long as the Vengeance fanfare is added back in). And I like that the big scores are not straightforward, you have to play it to your strengths to really unlock it.

And on the subject of 300, excellent game. I hope you are enjoying it.

#49 1 year ago

I love DI, but the machine that everyone who visits here goes back to over and over is ST. Very easy to see what to do, shots are open, flow is ridiculous.

Now that you mentioned it about the phones in games. Who dunnit has a phone too. For some reason that game bugs me!
