I am about to replace the coil on the upper right flipper. This flipper sticks all the time and I am getting frustrated. I did many adjustments and I changed the spring and it still sticks. I bought a switch but I see there is not one on this flipper, might make sense because the right button controls the top and bottom flippers - is that correct? any suggestions? The manual is calling out a switch that I can see though!

Probably not the coil. When does it stick? Does it stick as soon as the game is turned on? Does it stay stuck after the game is off?

#3 9 years ago

Yes, it can stay stuck after end of a game. I turn it back on it will stay stuck until I hit the left flipper. When I hit the left flipper button it will release. It sticks all the time, so much I do not even play the game much.

Does it stay stuck when you turn the power off? I am trying to isolate a mechanical issue with another issue.

#5 9 years ago

Yes, it will stay in the stuck position when turned off.

Is the spring washer between the coil and the end stop? Happens at work because they are missing. Do not understand why this happens but it does, also try loosening the end stop itself and sliding it back.

You have a mechanical issue. I would inspect the coil sleeve, the plunger and the coil stop. Something is binding and causing your issue.

Well, you are right, it was not the coil. I bought one so I put it in. Same result. I cleaned everything and the plunger is very loose and when I move it by hand it seems to be clear and moves freely. I agree something is binding but I do not know what. The spring washer is there also.

Flipper bushing good and got enough play in the flipper?

#10 9 years ago

The only thing that I see is that the coil stop is loose. The end brass button moves in and out about 1/32 and the left flipper which occasionally sticks does the same. The bottom right flipper is tight and I have no issues with that. Is this a possible cause?

The flipper bushing was cupped. Is that suppose to be like that? I am pretty handy with Williams pins but not so much with Stern at the moment.

The coil stop is 100% your problem. Replace those and your game will work fine again.
As soon as the brass part in the stop wears and it gets some play and looseness too it. The plunger /flipper will start to stick.

Great, I think that is it now also. I will post when I get new ones for everyones else's benefit. Thank you very much.

Yup; it's usually this. Cheap and easy fix.

That was it. I had some weld putty and figured I will try that to test it until I get a coil stop. Worked great. Thank you for everyone helping me on this. I appreciate it.
