#5141 7 years ago

Guys, I'm looking to join the club. Is there anyone out there with a Data East or Bally Star Trek for sale anywhere in the southeast? It would have to be reasonable driving distance of Birmingham.

Still looking to join the club. Anyone selling in the southeast??

Quoted from knockerlover:

My LE came w/ a promotional enterprise plastic. I've seen a few other promo plastics on ebay, but I'm not sure if they are genuine or which games they came with.

There are some that are the United Federation of Planets, Klingon insignia, Enterprise, and probably a couple more I'm forgetting. I'll have to look. There's also a bumper sticker that says "Have you played Star Trek pinball today?"

Finallly, after months of searching, I've booked my room in a city 360 miles away to become part of the club this weekend!

#5307 7 years ago

FINALLY!!!!! After a year of saving and searching, I joined the club this weekend!!! 700 miles later and I have one of my grail games!!! I got extremely lucky finding this in such GREAT shape. I'll post more pics later. 20160619_203550_resized_(resized).jpg20160619_203550_resized_(resized).jpg

Quoted from MustangPaul:

I love all forms of ST but I'm boycotting the theater showing, I oppose what CBS is doing to Axanar.

I don't like it any more than you do, but the only thing you're accomplishing here is hurting our beloved franchise. The only way we get more Star Trek is for it to bring in millions. That's really the only thing the execs care about. Luckily for all of us, they've already greenlit the 4th movie. I went last night to the premier and will probably go again on Sunday.

Oh and... the movie is GREAT!!

Quoted from Zitt:

I for one hope they continue to make episodes or find a way to work with CBS to continue the project.

I don't normally watch fan productions, but these are unusually good. It actually feels like you're watching TOS. I wonder how they were able to get this online. I know they were basically finished with production when CBS laid down the hammer on fan films.

#5553 7 years ago

Yeah I'm pretty bummed about this, but I'd rather have them take a little more time and do it right than rush and put out some shit.

#5573 7 years ago

Ehhhh - easily the least-interesting doctor in all of Star Trek canon... I wouldn't be too upset about not having that one. Diana Muldaur was a much better character on TOS.

In terms of more autographs, maybe Armin Shimerman. He had a small part as Quark on TNG.

WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GRAIL PIN ACQUIRED!!!!!! Haven't had a chance to really dig in or start cleaning, but it flips and boards all look great. I know it has issues with the trough optos. This is my first DMD, so it'll be a great learning experience. LLAP.20161007_165616_resized (resized).jpg20161007_165616_resized (resized).jpg20161007_165551_resized (resized).jpg20161007_165551_resized (resized).jpg

#5605 7 years ago

Okay so here's where I'm at with STTNG. On game start, the kickout assembly kicks out multiple balls and then begins firing. All of the trough optos and receivers appear to be working correctly. It's like the game doesn't know how many balls are in play. Are there other places I should be looking? The cannons are also unable to find the "home" position. Even after disabling them, they still move back and forth and kick like there is a ball in them. This is my first DMD, so any advise helps.

Thanks!

#5606 7 years ago

Now it seems like all of the switches and optos under the playfield aren't working. The trough will make the sound when the light beam is broken, but the optos in the subway and the cannons do nothing. I checked them with a camera and the light is definitely emitting. I find it hard to believe all of those receivers went bad.

Well I guess I'll give everyone the rundown on my Bally Star Trek. I'm a huge Trekkie and started my quest earlier this summer to locate and collect all 4 Star Trek pins. Not having any luck here in the Birmingham area on Craigslist, I started expanding my search to other places in Alabama. While searching on Mobile Craigslist, I happened to find a newly-placed ad for a nice looking POTC in the "Nearby Places" section located in New Orleans. In the corner of the picture of the ad I spotted the all-too-familiar blue backbox. I reached out to the seller who informed me she was looking to sell the Star Trek but hadn't settled on the price yet. She then sent these pictures:

13453703_10206600015575370_1665666233_n (resized).jpg13453703_10206600015575370_1665666233_n (resized).jpg13459685_10206600015735374_1188781599_n (resized).jpg13459685_10206600015735374_1188781599_n (resized).jpg13444274_10206600015775375_1496479228_n (resized).jpg13444274_10206600015775375_1496479228_n (resized).jpg13435651_10206600015495368_776359605_n (resized).jpg13435651_10206600015495368_776359605_n (resized).jpg

Crappy pics, but it was all she had. I could tell that it was in pretty decent condition. She told me the price and I almost fell out of my chair. I knew there would never be another find like this one. Luckily, my friends and I were going to New Orleans a couple of weeks later for my bachelor party! OH NO! We booked a train! (Who the hell does that? We did it for the experience. It was a blast and I would highly recommend it, actually.) I asked the seller on a Thursday if she would be willing to hold it for a couple of months. She said she needed to sell quickly, and I knew it would be gone if I didn't get it right then.

I explained to my fiance (now wife) how this was a rare opportunity and asked if she felt like spending the weekend in the city. Sure enough, because she's awesome, we packed up and headed down to NOLA. We booked a room and met up with the seller Saturday morning. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. The thing was beautiful - the nicest example I have ever seen unrestored. Playfield looked NOS, backglass was perfect, cab was solid with minimal scratching and fading, boards looked solid with no hacks, and everything was in the right place. I just ordered some repro plastics this morning. When those go on she'll be ready to be enjoyed by many for years to come.

Here she is as of yesterday:

20161027_212537 (resized).jpg20161027_212537 (resized).jpg

Sometimes things just work out perfectly. It was a lot of travelling over those couple of weekends, but well worth the effort. Everyone ended up surviving the bachelor party weekend - albeit with some pretty severe hangovers. For those of you who are curious, I did end up lucking into an incredible deal on a STTNG right in my backyard earlier last month. It's in great shape too. Needs a good shop job and a few minor repairs, but I'm really enjoying it.

Is there some kind of saucer protector for Bally Star Trek? Sometimes when I make a hard hit on the drops from the right flipper, it ricochets through the pop bumpers and slams the saucer. Does Cliffy make something for these type of holes?

Looks like someone put mylar in places that aren't stock... but logical.

I put the mylar down to protect the inserts from getting wear. All of the inserts on the playfield have mylar on them in some form or other. The slingshot mylar was there when I purchased the game from the original owner about a year and a half ago.

They put out code for AC/DC like 2 months ago. I'm having faith this time.

Quoted from gunstarhero:

the question is what are they worth to you?

They certainly will be for me when I purchase an LE/Prem.

#6748 5 years ago
Quoted from Scoot:

I think I would agree. I know it is a considerable difference in cost, but the added goodies seem to be worth it. But also for the difference in cost i could mod and upgrade the heck out of it... tough decision.

And for some reason the LE/Prem models just have a certain "feel" to them that makes them play better. Call me crazy, but I think it's the rail guards. They make the game feel much more solid.

You can just tell this is the version of the game Steve Ritchie wanted everyone to be playing.

My Data East Star Trek is having an issue where pressing a switch on a particular column will activate all the switches on the row associated with that switch. Any ideas? For example, pressing the left flipper button will cause the game to slam tilt. Pressing the shooter lane switch will cycle all the switches in that row on the switch test.

This whole thing started in the middle of a shop out. I've looked for any switches crossing over or grounding out but haven't seen any. I have very little board repair experience. Hopefully that's not it.

Quoted from Zitt:

Is this happening on all rows or just one row?

All the rows, which is why I haven't been able to figure this one out.

#6924 5 years ago
Quoted from Zitt:

All rows make me think it's a CPU board / switch matrix issue. [ See page 52 of schematics (CPU Board logic Sheet 2/4) ]
Can you swap the 6821s (8H vs 11B) to see if the matrix issue goes away and follows to the display/sound?

I found a bad transistor at Q54. Just placed the order and hopefully my soldering skills drastically improve between now and Friday.

No problem. Star Trek takes precedence over Star Wars for me, but love all the movies.

Quoted from pinheadpierre:

I have had a Stern ST premium for a few months now and love it. So does my 8-year old boy and his buddies. I am wondering if there's a way to toggle the machine into a tournament mode or something so that when the kids play they are playing against their own high scores rather than my considerably (and for them totally unreachable) higher scores. The kids really like putting their names up on the machine but so far that's usually meant wiping the scores to make it more enjoyable for them. Suggestions?

Unfortunately, I don't think there's any way to do what your're asking other than wiping the scores. Until pinball is integrated into the internet (which, according to George Gomez, will be fairly soon) I don' think we're likely to see anything like player profiles.

Until then, I would recommend keeping up with your personal high scores on the Pindigo app. It is kinda like Instagram for pinball scores and can be downloaded on iOS and Android devices. It will also give you numerous analytics and allow you to share your scores, follow others, etc.

How does the playfield look?

#7845 4 years ago

That's not surprising. These things are almost always blown out. Yours isn't as bad as a lot of others. You just have to get really luck or spend a lot of money to get a nice one - sometimes both. A Hardtop would be awesome, but I saw where he mentioned licensed games are probably a long ways off unfortunately.

Quoted from pacman11:

Yeah I found a replacement but it was very expensive at around $350. I just want an original good working one.. It comes is three different colors too..

I would just bite the bullet and buy the LED one. It'll be brighter and last forever. You won't have to worry about replacing another one after it also gasses out.

The "colors" are just plastic overlays and can be swapped out to your preference. I called the guy a Boston Pinball once and he said he would send me an additional color plate if I ordered one because I couldn't decide. I ended up being able to fix my DMD, so I didn't need it. I thought it was a nice gesture though.

Does anybody have a spare blue tube for the chase lights on DE Star Trek? I did the LED conversion but wasn't happy with how I cut one of the shrouds.

Quoted from J85M:

Anyone with an LE changed out the chrome t-moulding?

Not on this game, but I changed out the chrome moulding on my NASCAR to black and it made a word of difference. Much classier look IMHO.

I have a soft spot for the reboots. I saw the 2009 remake when I was 19 and said, "there's gotta be something to this Star Trek thing," so I started with the Original Series after that and never looked back. While I think they pale in comparison to anything pre-Enterprise, the reboot films do have some popcorn munching entertainment value to them. Into Darkness is definitely the worst of the 3.

Don't even get me started on Discovery and Picard though. Not only are they the two worst Star Trek shows, they're some of the worst television of all time. CBS and Alex Kurtzman can kiss the fattest part of my ass for putting out garbage like that and calling it Star Trek.

#9348 3 years ago

I know that last bit was in jest, but somehow Star Trek becomes a part of you when you really "get it". I may only be 30 and missed the shows in their first run, but in a lot of ways it changes your perspective about the world around you in the best way. I thought after the 2009 movie that Star Trek had to be something special to have (at the time) around 729 hours of content, so I checked it out. I was absolutely hooked after finding the Original Series and have seen every second of the entire franchise and a lot of it multiple times. When you spend that amount of time with something you really love it.

Really looking forward to rounding out the ST pin collection one day. Got really lucky with the first 3, so all I need is a Stern premium or LE.

That said, I think it's sad I couldn't bring myself to watch the latest season of Discovery. It's just that bad.
