STTNG owner here. First and only pin so far but my next will most likely be a Stern ST Premium or Pro.

#114 10 years ago

I went with Cointakers Super 906 Greens for my borg ship along with the green acrylic windows from Pinbits. The result sounds like what your looking for.

20130427_125052_zps1c14dbb2.jpg20130427_125052_zps1c14dbb2.jpg 20130427_123545_zps99e42f5b.jpg20130427_123545_zps99e42f5b.jpg 20130427_125054_zpse78ac166.jpg20130427_125054_zpse78ac166.jpg

#117 10 years ago

Neither, they are 906 flashers =) For your GI/Inserts/Controlled lamps you will have a mix of 44/555 and for your flashers you will have 906/89. If you look in the manual there are diagrams with all the lamps/flashers and which is used for each. For specific colors you are going to have to actually look at and lift your playfield.

Quoted from chinosts:

On a closer look... it does seem like your Neutral Zone is getting a little smashed by the green.. How do you find it?

Well the first pic is when borg multiball starts. There is no ball in play when it looks like that. I have no problems seeing the NZ otherwise.

#122 10 years ago

4 different.

44: http://shop.cointaker.com/product.sc?productId=362&categoryId=60

555: http://shop.cointaker.com/product.sc?productId=371&categoryId=60

89: http://shop.cointaker.com/product.sc?productId=1503&categoryId=8

906: http://shop.cointaker.com/product.sc?productId=1514&categoryId=8

And then there are flex versions of all of them I believe. You will find that with a lot of the inserts the bulb will face to the side. With a regular led it will direct the light straight ahead, meaning to the side of the playfield and NOT up like you want it to. That's where you want a flex bulb like these:

http://shop.cointaker.com/product.sc?productId=1292&categoryId=166

Frosteds will give you a more diffused light. It's all preference. As I said, emailing them for their kit list is a good start. Then take that list, open up your game and figure out what you want.

#124 10 years ago

Its all preference really. A lot of people use blue. Here is a pic I found of the blue.

Quoted from Jean-Luc-Picard:

Yeah its a hard one. Pretty much anywhere you put it, it will block something. That's why I had to make the hard decision of keeping it plugged into my xmas tree and not my pin. If you feel you really need a NCC 1701-D Maybe this would be a better alternative? Just buy a model and hang it above the pin from the ceiling. lolololol

There have been a lot of different character busts made and I have checked out some for a topper. Those you have on your machine are a good size. You happen to have any links to where you found those?

#187 10 years ago

I have a fast color changer in my command decision, its pretty cool. I think you would want to go slow color changers for the pop bumpers.

#190 10 years ago

None of them are hard. Some require you to unscrew the socket to change a bulb, others have holders that just twist out. There is nothing difficult about any of them though.

Mine have a lot of "crazing" (I think thats what its called). They get not only cloudy but they look like the have cracks through them. How do you go about replacing them. Are all inserts put in after clear is finished or is there clear over the inserts? If so then I guess I will never be replacing mine.

#326 10 years ago

When I bought my STTNG 2 years ago the previous owner had just completely tore down the pin and cleaned/waxed it. It was immaculate. It has been cleaned some since but I haven't done a tear down myself yet. I decided that even though its pretty clean, I want to do a full tear down, new rubbers, and clean/wax this week when I do the LED conversion. So what do most of you guys use for rubbers, white or black? Also, I am torn on the flipper color, thinking about trying light blue to match the logo or purple to go with the playfield colors. Anyone have pics with some "different" colors for posts, rubber, flippers, etc?

Also where do you guys get your stuff? I see that Marcos has a white rubber kit and I can get balls there. Does anyone else sell a black kit if I opt to go that way?

Quoted from jathomp22:

I added the external sub and it was noticeably better with just the sub. Too much bass was overpowering so I had to adjust till I found the sweat spot that really added to the game play experience. Also, I can hook 2 machines up to one sub and also test it on other machines to see if they sound better with an external sub.

I went the same route with the external sub. I will admit that I have never tried the Flipper Fidelity speakers so I can't speak from experience. There was a thread here and on RGP about using an external sub and most people claimed that it was no contest, the sub blew away the FF speakers for much less cost, and you can hook up 2 pins per sub. I love mine, it sounds awesome once you find that sweet spot. I can shake my house with my pin if I wanted to.

I really never paid attention to the ship rumble in the background on STTNG until I hooked up a sub. Its pretty intense.

That was my thread you linked but I never did end up adding my ship to the thread. Here is the other thread I created when I painted my ship with a little on how I did it also.

Here is mine with green acrylic windows and green leds. I really like the effect.

Quoted from Zitt:

Green def feels more like the show imho... at least later generations of the borg.
But I too bought blue... to match existing film in the ship.

I will have to dig through my pics and see if I have one but when I did my ship, the original film in mine was green. I guess it could have been replaced at some point but if it was, it was done a LONG time ago. It was very brittle and did not look to have ever been replaced before.

So how do STTNG and STLE play together in a collection? I know the layouts are very similar but how is the gameplay? I am getting ready to pull the trigger on a Metallica Pro which will be my second pin, first being STTNG. The new ST seems to be getting a lot of love too. I love the theme but in a small collection would I be better off sticking with Metallica for some diversity or would the 2 ST pins compliment each other nicely?

Yes I do know I am asking this in the Star Trek thread. Hoping I can get an objective view on it.

I finally got the balls to tear down my STTNG and clean/wax it. It really wasn't as bad as I thought. Ended up taking me about 6.5 hours last night to do the top side of the playfield and then this morning I finished up with the subway. Considering this was my first time I am pretty happy. All parts accounted for and put back together correctly. I am still tweaking the ball launch habitrail. I launches perfect most of the time but probably 1 in 20 times it comes off the habitrail a little odd and doesn't get the ball all the way up to the top. It's just a matter of tuning the angle.

The only LEDs I had left to go were under the pop bumpers and after adding them, I switched them back. They just didn't illuminate the whole cap as well as incandescent. May try some other bulbs later. I also put in new Silverjet balls and with new wax, this sucker is fast. I went from an average score of about 1.5 billion per game to a high score today of 587 million after about 10-15 games. It's also draining a LOT more right now with the added speed and weird spin. Going to need some practice.

btw, the wires hanging under the borg ship have been relocated. I didn't notice them until I started playing the game.

Oddly, I can hit the Picard Maneuver easier now with all this speed. A little practice and I am already adjusting. 1.6 billion earlier, 3 balls and didn't even hit final frontier. I set my GC score of 6.6 billion last year and I have a feeling I am going to crush that soon. That was an exceptional game back then but lately my average games are getting pretty high. I had a 3.5 billion game or so last week and it only got me 3rd place Honor roll.

What are you guys getting for GC scores with 3 balls? I do have replay awarding an extra ball but replay is currently at 1.185 billion so I don't feel too bad about it. I have still never hit warp 9.9. Best I got was 9.7 I think but now I am really practicing the Picard Maneuver since it awards so many points.

I have owned my STTNG for 4 years now. I am the only one in my house that plays it. The wife played it the first night I brought it home and never since. I had a Jurassic Park for a year and she never played that. I bought a Metallica Pro in April and about 2 weeks ago she finally asked to try it with me. She has played it nightly since. She will turn it on and play it by herself. I would guess she is putting 15+ games per day on it right now, no idea if or how many she might be playing on the weekend when i'm working. My point is that she has finally got the bug for pinball but she still doesn't play STTNG.

She is a big fan of the new Star Trek movies and she seems to like the fast play on Metallica so I am wondering if it might be time for STTNG to move on and try a ST Pro. I am open to suggestions/opinions here. I have personally never played a Stern ST.

#3655 8 years ago

It's possible but my space is limited. Right now I am at a 3 pin limit so that would leave me with Metallica, STTNG, ST Pro. Not sure I want 2 Star Trek games in a 3 pin collection.

#3657 8 years ago

She has never been a Metallica fan and she hates the artwork, so I gotta believe it's all about the game play.

So what is the going rate for a nice STTNG these days? I have owned this one for 4 years now and never really expected that I would ever let it go, but the wife is now into pinball and she doesn't like it so it's gotta make room for something else. It has worked flawlessly for me for 4 years now which is pretty impressive for a STTNG.

The previous owner replaced all 3 ramps with Pinball Inc ramps and new canon covers right before I purchased it. The borg ship was really yellowed and had a little warp from the heat of the bulbs. I painted the borg ship and added the Pinball Life green window acrylics. 99% of the bulbs have been replaced with custom LEDs and roms updated with the WPC Non-Ghosting patch. I bought a partial kit and ended up making a lot of changes so the rest was done custom. I think I hit a good balance. It also has Great Lakes trough opto boards which have worked perfectly. There is a cliffy protector on the neutral zone.

I just did a full teardown, clean, and wax of the playfield. Subway was also removed and cleaned. New rubbers and balls. I have the Hallmark Ferrengi and Klingon ships to add at some point along with the Klingon BOP LED board. I just never got around to doing the mods. The artwork is in great shape. The front has normal wear including the phaser handle but the sideart is rich with no gouges or fading. The art on the head is good with minimal wear on the edges. The glass has some scratches.

I will probably be putting this up for sale in another week or two so I am trying to figure out what it's worth. I am interested in trying out a ST Premium so I might be looking to do trade + cash. Really depends what machines I can find that the wife likes. So what do you guys think price wise?

Well, I can play all my favorite pins by myself.....or I can find another one she enjoys and play with her. It's only a pin.

#3710 8 years ago

It's all good anyways, we are going to pickup 2 pins in the next month or two. She wants a GoT if it's announced next and I am leaning towards a ST Premium, so i'll still be in the club

Quoted from Eskaybee:

Absolutely! After all, TNG and ST ARE better than MET! And if the haters (met owners?) are gonna do everything in their power to keep ST out of the top 10, then we should at least beat them in followers!

Just get both STTNG and Met, then you are always on the winning team

Doesn't seem to be much love for STTNG in the marketplace lately. Relisted mine at what I think is a reasonable price but haven't had any reasonable offers. Couple trade offers but even those were pretty offset in the buyers favor. Is it a bad time to sell or is STTNG usually a hard sell?

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/for-sale-fsft-star-trek-the-next-generation-1

#4871 8 years ago

Yeah that's what I figured. Love STTNG but I have had it 5 years now and there are so many cool new titles out there that it's time for a change. Seems like a lot of people have the same line of thinking. I suppose I should get off my butt and install the KBOP light board that I bought from you Been pretty lazy modding anything other than Metallica lately. =)
