Josh - Just to be clear; I'm speaking for the LE specificially; as that is what I own.
I had a friend verify the Laser connector is NOT PRESENT in his machine... so I'm *assuming* the Enterprise connector is also missing. It's pretty clear that the GI harness is radically different between the Pro and the Prem/LE as the latter is controlled via the RGB insert boards on the LE.

#5166 7 years ago

ZOMG... get those popcaps on there STAT!
It's making me ill looking at those stock POSes.

John

#5178 7 years ago
Quoted from heni1977:

Quick Question does ST prem have a knocker for the free game or a squeak sound? Is it possible to install one if not?

Doubt it. My LE still has the squeak of annoyance... so your prem def doesn't have a real knocker. Don't think any recent stern game has had a real knocker.. since; Monopoly I'm guessing.

Quoted from Rom:

Just installed the LE Enterprise on my PRO. Fits right in and plugs fine into the 12v outlet near the coin door. Also installed the two LE asteroids and love the new look.

To confirm; the LE enterprise isn't connected to the GI harness... but instead to the outlet near the coin door. How did you handle lifting the PF? really long wires?

Where the heck are YOUR popcaps?

#5183 7 years ago
Quoted from Rom:

I bought it at marcospecialities. 164 $ plus shipping. Really got to absolutely want it. But I am out of my mind when it comes to pinball.

holly sh1t. yeah... love is the right word.
Isn't the hallmark enterprise cheaper and a better match to the actual ship. The LE ship is garbage with is stupid blue LEDs and half hull "suggestions".

Quoted from Rom:

I used the connector of the hallmark enterprise I already had. It's exactly the same connector and the wire is long enough.

So you are able to run this along the gi harness to the "back" of the PF then down the side. I'm picturing in my mind a really long wire bundle; else it's a short wire you have to disconnect everytime you lift the PF. (which *I* do a lot)

#5185 7 years ago

Well; to each his own. So... Rom... When are you ordering some popcaps for your machine?
With all that love (read: $$$) you put into that Pro... It seems odd to me you didn't get a set. Let me tempt you:
RYB color option - Stern Star Trek PopCapsRYB color option - Stern Star Trek PopCaps

Or are you waiting for my Dimmer to come out first so you can save on shipping? Oh, wait... Duh... The pro doesn't have a Laser; so there isn't really a need for a Dimmer so you can see it better.

#5194 7 years ago
Quoted from glasairpilot:

So knowing that I have a constant 75 volts going to my crash coil I am guessing I now have a problem in the board? If so, what should I look for?

Unfortunately; it sounds like you shorted the ?MOSFET? driving transistor on the CPU board. I'm not near my manual at the moment; so can't offer more help than that.

--------------
As many may know; I'm working on several new designs for the Stern Star Trek machines. More information here:
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/new-stern-star-trek-products

I need to maximize the number of boards ordered... so; if you are interested in any of these designs - please load your demand via the red link “Out of Stock, Get notified when re-stocked“ at the top of each product page. Doing so will get you a one-time, time limited 10% off coupon code for the product when it goes in stock. If I can get 50 people interested in each design; the assembly costs become cheaper... making the product cheaper for everyone. Here's each product page for your reference:

#5200 7 years ago

Or it's a bad transistor on the CPU board.
Don't assume the assembly is the fix. Troubleshoot.

#5209 7 years ago

Happ is a well known arcade supplier.
I've bought stuff from them.

#5219 7 years ago

Today is the last day I'm taking "pre-order" demand loads for the new designs I've been working on for the Stern Star Trek machines. More information here:
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/new-stern-star-trek-products

I intend to only order enough boards to satisfy demand. so; if you are interested in any of these designs - please load your demand via the red link “Out of Stock, Get notified when re-stocked“ at the top of each product page. Doing so will get you a one-time, time limited 10% off coupon code for the product when it goes in stock. http://pinball-mods.com/oscom/game-specific-products-stern-star-trek-star-trek-gi-dimmer-p-41.html

Looks like there will be only 20 or so of each design - the nebula and dimmer being the most popular. It doesn't look like we'll get to 50 people by tonight.

#5247 7 years ago

I really hate that topper. It's really a joke.
I think to avoid copyright issues; the "artist" used a model/render of a non-existant enterprise like ship as the main centerpiece on that POS. I'm glad *some* people find it acceptable; but I just don't. It's not accurate to ANY star trek series... much less the JJAbrams 'verse.

#5251 7 years ago

Have the same problem... although not as dramatic. I have given up trying to fix it.

Those popcaps look nice.

#5255 7 years ago
Quoted from bonanza:

If I was to do it again I'd put the little pieces of acrylic at the very end of the plastic engine and probably use some clear glue like E6000 that I am more familiar with.

From the one picture you showed above.... it looks like you set the acrylic pieces back too far.
They should be within 1/8" of the front of the engine plastic.

I love me all the Star Trek's
gratz to all new owners!

#5286 7 years ago

Guys - the hum is normal. Stop looking for problems until they are problems.
PWM is used to control the "power" in the coils. When you first click the button; the PWM is high ... maybe even 100% for the most power. Then when EOS occurs; it drops to a hold PWM... maybe 20%. This prevents coil burnout and makes the design simpler and cheaper.

#5295 7 years ago
Quoted from minishark:

Aurich, do you still have any translites and decals? I'm just ordering my Star Trek Pro and saw a picture of your beautiful artwork.

He got a "request" from Stern to stop... so; he did.

#5309 7 years ago
Quoted from Trekkie1978:

Do they recast or write him out of the series?

Nah... this is the last one (supposedly)... I have doubts that the fastnfurious director can continue the legacy.
IF if they do continue... they could recast someone given the whole crew is a "look alike".

#5312 7 years ago
Quoted from PanzerFreak:

I think its time to come up with some crazy way to get The Borg into this series.

zOMG... please no. I Love the Borg... but not in this century. They need to find a way to have an ORGINAL STORY line. I'll absolutely rage quit the movies is they try to remake The Voyage Home.

It wouldn't surprise me if they continue this train-wreck of a timeline... after all we keep paying them tons of money every-time a new one comes out.

#5316 7 years ago
Quoted from investingdad:

The car in question may have been subject to recall for that problem.
Ho boy...look out lawsuit.

Where did you read that?

#5320 7 years ago
Quoted from investingdad:

On the news today. The Jeep in question was going to be recalled for exactly what happened.

Heard the same thing on ABC news... BUT; they said that the fix for Recall was only a week old... and they hadn't yet notified people that a recall was available.

#5342 7 years ago

That's awesome to hear but kinda sad at the same time.
Was this an early preview? as I thought it'd launch on July4 like last time... NM. I stand corrected... I was thinking they'd open it at least next weekend. Maybe I'll wait until the 4th to watch it.

I just got back from a Star Trek Vacation... and finally uploaded my pictures:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/52968060@N00/sets/72157672693024886/

Check out many of your star trek actors if you missed the Vegas convention. #STLV50

#5505 7 years ago
Quoted from Spock:

Wow, they really upgraded the convention quality. Really wish I went this year and not the previous. I even saw they had ST pinball machines in the lobby. Thanks for the photos, wish I went...

Well... TBH; Creation events are all about separating you from your cash. While they extended to 5days... I kinda felt like they were stretching 4-ish days of "content" into 5days. I'm *want* to want to go to next year's STNG's 30th convention - I'm not sure I want to funnel more cash into Creation's wallet.

CBS / Paramount are definitely putting their marketing force behind this convention... and that's not a good thing. Case In Point: Creation cock-blocked any discussions about fan films in this convention. They actively prevented attendees from asking questions about fan films with the stage actors. It was funny because a few hours later WalterK actively discussed his Renegades work specifically in regards to how he didn't like the new guidelines and so they just stripped all ST references from the work. I don't know if it was in retaliation to Creations "new policy" or just him being candid with his thoughts.

It wasn't too long ago that Creation had "contests" for fan films or was it ST music videos. IDK. Regardless, this is one of the main reasons I don't want to support Creation with any more money.

They didn't have pinball machines in the lobby.
Pinball Arcade was there with a booth populated with a Stern Premium and a Williams STNG. Amazingly they both withstood the hordes of trekkies! They had a VR rig for the new stern arcade; but I didn't get a chance to check it out.

#5507 7 years ago

yeah. Some people don't handle stress well. I don't have any specific knowledge of him... but I do understand that he needs support of CBS to make it "official". Just not happy with the way was handled this year.

To make matters worse; they're decision to support "Rio" - an off strip hotel is not good.
That hotel is RUN DOWN and is poorly maintained. Our floor (13) has the light fixtures rotting off the wall. Cue in the fact that atleast 3-4 elevators were non-operable (an apparently have been for years) is just stoopid. It's a damn casino and you can't maintain your property?

Given the week cost me north of 3k... I don't feel like a good ROI.

#5509 7 years ago

Yes. since it moved from the Hilton where the Experience used to be

#5515 7 years ago

I've seen some references somewhere about identifying the column pin on the display and using some conductive silver "paint" to fix it.
Is this an STNG or a different game (like stern)?

If I were you I'd examine the display for cold solder joints in the area.

#5525 7 years ago

I did. Put the pin in switch test mode and hit the pf with your fist looking for vibration induced switches.

Mine turned out to be a misaligned onto on the warp ramp

#5537 7 years ago

The next episode of Star Trek: Continues is online:
https://vimeo.com/178685237

I rather enjoyed it... As is typical of most star trek episodes; it seemed to pull some likeness to the current climate here in America and shine a light on it.

I for one hope they continue to make episodes or find a way to work with CBS to continue the project.

#5542 7 years ago
Quoted from hawkmoon:

Can someone tell me where to find a "Kelvin" ship mod??

Like this:
http://pinball-mods.com/oscom/modifications-do-it-yourself-uss-kelvin-stadiumleds-p-8.html
Or did you mean a completed ship? I might have a prototype I could sell you if interested. Contact me via PM or via the website.

Quoted from Pahuffman:

. I wonder how they were able to get this online. I know they were basically finished with production when CBS laid down the hammer on fan films.

I'm just guessing; but they probably feel like they had the right people on board at CBS. Not sure.

Quoted from ninjabones:

Picked up the Pinball Refinery pinblades and LED lighting kit at Pinfest and finally got around the installing them. Somewhat of a challenge to install the upper left standoff, but otherwise pretty simple project (maybe 30 minutes). I removed mirror blades for these and definitely like the effect. The LEDs only shine during Klingon multiball. It's very cool.
Here's some shots that should help anyone doing the install.

I have the same configuration with the pinblades; I thought the purple led strips were a little too bright so I hooked them up to one of my PWM aux channels and dim them to 25% and 4% during normal and kmball respectively.
If you are interested in how I wired them in; let me know.

-1
#5556 7 years ago
Quoted from ninjabones:

Sure, please post or pm me. Thanks. It is a bit bright of the room lights are off. Also does somewhat wash out the stock lasers. Thinking I need to upgrade to the bright laser mid

This only works with my PWM Dimmer. To do this; I cut the ground line on his lighting kit (black wire) and left the red + wire connected to the laser motor. I then connected the black wire to Aux PWM channel 4 on J5 of the PWM dimmer. This allows you to control the lighting with a PWM channel in both modes.

The mosFETs on my PWM channel can handle 20VDC; which works for the laser motor. I'll try to confirm the configuration for sure tonight when I get home from work.

I also sell the higher power lasers which work perfectly with the PWM Dimmer. i offer Blue in addition to the Green and Red Lasers offered by others.

I finally got around to stitching together the autographs I got on my STNG translite. I got these autographs over SEVERAL Star Trek conventions. The last one was #STLV50 in Vegas where the wife got Whoopi's autograph and I got Denise Crosby. I know; that neither of these people are featured on the backglass... but for me it's not about being accurate to the glass; just being honored to have the signature.

I'm not sure who else I'd defiantly get on the glass as I gotten all the "regulars" on the show w/ the exception of polaski.

#5560 7 years ago

Already there. That's his over the Enterprise in the tractor beam.

Jonathan Del Arco (Hue) is next to the borg face in the top center.

Quoted from investingdad:

Reginald Barclay?
Miles O'Brien?

Good ideas. not sure where to put them tho.

Was she really a regular in STNG? DS9; yeap... but not sure about this show. I stand correct.
I'm not sure I've ever heard of her being at a convention. - now that I think about it... I remember her on stage during a Vegas evening show... so I just have to remember that for the future.

Quoted from BobC:

BTW, has anybody managed to put the Stern Star Trek Popcaps by Zitt on a STTNG?

Quoted from mavantix:

Zitt's popcaps on STTNG: I don't think it would work, screw holes would be in the wrong position? I can take I look, I have them on my ST Pro...

Correct. The screw positioning would be wrong - as would the graphics.
"In theory" one could make an "adapter" undercap... but given this is the last batch of popcaps... I don't want to create another market to deplete the stock.

I will tell you I did invest in designing STNG popcaps... but then got garbage from my current vendor and killed the project:
Because of this garbage; I killed the business relationship and will no longer be ordering Stern Star Trek PopCaps from them.

Quoted from Irishbastard:

Pull the coil stop and check it, they are notorious for poping the rivet....Both of mine were broken which resulted in flippers getting stuck. Stern used crap parts...

The "stop" on the coilstop gets loose with normal play.
I had to replace my coilstops last year.

Also; check to make sure your flipper switch gap is correct / not closed. I had that problem at last years TPF.

#5747 7 years ago
Quoted from J85M:

zitt will you be getting Stern ST popcaps from another vendor? Maybe a newer version with no screw holes or something to boost interest with a new design?

No. After this batch is sold out; the product will be retired.

#5752 7 years ago

#5760 7 years ago

All back in post#302 I didn't have a access to the picture of the Garbage I received from my previous vendor who did the Stern Star_Trek pop Caps. Here's the a picture of the garbage they tried to send me after three months of delay:
GarbageGarbage
I think you all can see the problems... but basically I said [in the spec/pdf] the center needed to be highly polished "faux" gold and the Emblem needed to be highly polished chrome/sliver. They seemed to think that the yellow and white finger paint would be perfectly acceptable.

I told them to shove it up their arse... and demanded a refund. They ofcourse denied my request so I took it up with my credit card company. So; that is the reason I am not offering these STNG caps or Stern popcaps (once they sell out) from this vendor.

The horror of seeing our captain playing "hack universe" is almost too much to bear.

#5847 7 years ago
Quoted from Skeets:

Unfortunately it seems any that the distribs have left in stock they bumped up the price a bit

I don't think that is the case. Stern did a mandatory price hike late last year that increased the "floor" of pricing for ALL stern machines current still available at the disti's. So whatever the game use to cost is no longer valid. Do a search on Pinside; there was a thread about the new pricing that got pretty heated if I recall correctly.

Trace the warp ramp optos' wires to the opto board in question. With the machine off, unplug an reseat each cable connected to that board. Turn the machine on and test.

Mine does this sometimes; and this always fixes it for me.

Quoted from kwvogel:

I've owned an HUO Star Trek (Pro) for about 2 years that has had no problems during that time. Recently, in the middle of a game, a loud static started coming from the speaker in the bottom of the cabinet.

No real advise here.
I assume you bought this game second hand from the original owner?
If so; do you know who the distributor was for the game?
My advice is to work thru that distributor or contact Stern's technical support to troubleshoot.
That sounds to me like there is an problem with the audio section of the board in the back box... You may have to buy a replacement main board from Stern.

It's either the enterprise that came on the Premiums and LEs from Stern or it's the Hallmark ornament mod.

That is not the Prem/LE enterprise... because that one looks like arse and it mounts way different with a wireform.
That is the hallmark enterprise; I'm about 90% sure.

What do you mean w/ regard to nacelle lights?
Are you talking about my Vengeance Nacelle Mod or something else?

You should consider some of my PopCaps for your machine... because you'll get the Vengeance Nacelle Mod with it (free).

Quoted from J85M:

Has anyone ever taken their LE side rails off to see how the LEDs are routed and set into the cabinet??

There is a flexible cable that comes out of the red led "strip". It plugs into a little "board" which is bolted on the back of the lower cabinet near the top. It is visible if you lower the head and look in the hole. The flexible cable is held against the back of the machine with a clear plastic screwed to the wood.

I know this; because I had one side stop working because the flexible cable removed itself during transport.

Did you check the fuse on the main mission board?
I think the voltage regulator on the center mission board is fused... so maybe that's the cause?
Also make sure the yellow GI voltage cable is secure on that mission board.

#6024 6 years ago

Which game?
I know my STNG has a clear credits option in the menu... Pretty sure the Stern has it as well.

cscmtp,

Quoted from cscmtp:

Guys I need a big favor. We had to replace a board and 4 wires because our opto wasn't working anymore behind the drop target, and this required having to take off the ship and everything on top of the playfield around that area. This was NOT fun or easy. So we are putting it back together and would like to see maybe a picture of the top and sides of that area if anyone has one they can share. Thank you!!

Have you looked at my Stern Star_Trek PopCap installation instructions? In that document I walk thru the disassembly of the Vengeance, so maybe the instructions will help you reassemble?

No question STLE is a rare machine, you find one you buy it! Trust me its worth it I love mine, transfer the mods over to LE.

I wouldn't call it a rare machine... I'm pretty sure it holds the records as the largest number of LEs manufactured unless Star Wars beat it.
What was it 800?

It is a nice machine, Glad I bought mine... I'm really enjoying creating all the mods for the game!

In light of the pending announcement of Star Trek from ColorDMD; I'm considering doing another run of ColorDMD adapters.
If you are interested; please add yourself to the waitlist (Red Link at top of page) so I can judge demand.

#6138 6 years ago
Quoted from Doctor6:

To adapt to what exactly?

You cannot install the ColorDMD in a Star Trek (?new backbox?) as-is as there are center studs which will break/scratch/damage the ColorDMD.
This was discussed fairly extensively in this Pinside thread.

As Spidey stated; ColorDMD does offer a solution for $24 but I don't know specifically what it looks like or how it works as they added this option for the newest Sterns.

If you want specifics as to what I offer; please check the Install Instructions on our product page.

#6145 6 years ago
Quoted from Oneangrymo:

wil it work with the custom sound code ?

Custom sounds do not effect the DMD animations... so I'd wager it will have no impact.

Quoted from InfiniteLives:

Zitt your product page says for premium / le, do the pros need this as well? This would be my first color dmd

Unknown. Suspect yes.... as it's still not a standard Backbox on the Pro.
I haven't had anyone report back that it works on the Pro - so cannot speak to the specifics as I don't have a pro to test on.

#6147 6 years ago
Quoted from gunstarhero:

From what I read all versions need the adapter for for the LCD but the LED should drop right in.

IMHO; the game is already bright enough that I wouldn't necessarily want an overly bright LED product in the game.
I guess it's possible that ColorDMD designed their LED panel to fit the newer games... but i'd really be shocked if it fit all modern sterns properly.

That said; I agree the LED may fit better because it's not as tall as the ColorDMD LCD panels... but I'm still not convinced there aren't clearance issues with the center studs on the game.

Quoted from Zitt:

As Spidey stated; ColorDMD does offer a solution for $24 but I don't know specifically what it looks like or how it works as they added this option for the newest Sterns.

Pictures of the ColorDMD mounting solution are on their product page:

Only thing not spoken for is the blackout mod fyi.

I have plenty of stock of the Green Laser (Red and Blue too). I also have my version of the Blackout mod which will allow any percentage of the GI to be set in both modes.

I am no longer waitlisting for the Stern KBOP as the ships are becoming more and more rare (hence more expensive). Once I am out of stock of the WingLEDs; I don't plan on restocking. If anyone is interested in the Stern KBOP; you need to PM or email me ASAP.

IMO, I needed more light I went with some other lights.

I agree; it needs more light - however, on my machine - I noticed adding more light = more current = which causes the already overwhelmed controlled GI circuit to overload and go into short circuit mode. On my LE (and several other machines); this symptom shows up as the RGB inserts not working properly (flashing or completely dark).

IF you aren't seeing it; great. But keep it in mind.

A customer of mine graciously agreed to sell me his Shooter housing decal for Aurich 's Alternate decal set; as a result, I was able to finally finish my custom shooter housing and knob.
Custom 50th Anniversary Shooter KnobCustom 50th Anniversary Shooter Knob
I had a shooter housing custom powder coated LE blue and installed the Decal. The knob is 3D printed at Shapeways from my custom design:
https://www.shapeways.com/product/H2B8KG6NH/star-trek-50-shooter-knob-r3?optionId=60922094
in polished Nickel and I powder coated it LE blue to match the housing.
A Star Trek 50th Anniversary Pin was then JB welded to the knob and it was encased in EasyCast Clear Casting Epoxy to give it a smooth surface for the palm of your hand.

Overall; I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Before ordering; I'd carefully examine the triangle extender board for cold / cracked solder joints.
I'd unhook the long "triangle insert" board, remove it from the machine, and reflow the white connectors with a soldering iron.
If that doesn't fix it; then yeah ordering a replacement board set would be my next shotgun approach.
Keep in mind; that main triangle board is the a main board in the machine... I wouldn't expect it to be cheap.

Welcome. I also second the ColorDMD mod. There is really only ColorDMD... while there are copycats out there... their tools and coloring capability are garbage. Further the ColorDMD only colors dots that are there, so the cartoonish nature are the dots stern provided. Unless Stern sells a retrofit with all-new high rez dots; I don't think you are going to find anything better.

I thought of you almost immediately last night after seeing the announcement. Hold on for another year at least it would seem, as I will for sure be needing them... either on a new VE, or on a gently used premium.

LOL, thanks.
I need to "invest" in some new games so I can do some modding... but TBH; I'm pretty "Meh" with most games coming out.

Quoted from StylesBitchly:

Is it worth spending the cash on a Color DMD? I know this game doesn't have the best dots?

IDK who's telling you that... ColorDMD is a must have IMHO.
The color dots are 100x better than a red LED dmd... and Dmod 's team can't work wonders when there isn't art coming from Stern across the dmd interface. I personally don't think the game looks right without a ColorDMD - it's must have.

#6701 5 years ago
Quoted from J85M:

Is there any games or themes at all John that you would like to create some mods for? Maybe not something you would like to own but just create mods for?

IDK... I've considered doing a GOT popcap set... but the issue is I'm not sure how "hungry" people are for that game.
I've also considered a GoG popcap set... and batman 66. but again; not sure how people feel about those games.

I find I have to be "invested" in a title... to make mods. That's why I do games I own... because I can iterate on the mods until they work like I want. I don't subscribe to the "generate random kit based on an off the shelf toy" crowds that just throw some random LEDs as a toy.

TBH; I thought the STNG popcaps were a "slam dunk"... but they just haven't sold like the Stern ST caps. I guess most people aren't looking for mods for the older games.

The problem with any Laser kit is the Pro lacks the software hooks to "turn on" the laser at the appropriate time.

I have some worn rubbers on my ST. Any suggestions on type and color. What about super bands on flippers?

Which ST?
Regardless; I'm Titan's rubbers on almost all my machines now.
I think I'm sill using superbands on my Stern STLE; mainly because they were installed before Titan launched their competition rubber line. The superbands are still functional; so I haven't needed to convert to Titan.

IIRC:
Blue Titan's STLE
Pink Titan's STDE
Yellow Titan's STMU
Purple Titan's STNG

I generally match the flipper rubber to the sling color which is usually a color present near the slings on the games.

#7029 5 years ago

I'm not aware of any off the shelf replacements for the Blue LED+ Harness.
IIRC; Stern hotglued the whole blue led+harness as a mess inside the nacelle.

If it were me; I'd go get a blue LED and try to un-mess that mess so I could splice in that new led. But agreed; it an't gonna be easy or fun.

It's easy to look at; just unscrew the two phillips screws on the nacelle and then you might have to break some of the hot glue which will be on the nacelle to get it off. http://pinball-mods.com/blogs/?p=476 briefly talks about the removal.

Announcing a soft launch of a new product I've been working on for a few months... I finally got a product I was happy with so I'm making them available to all Star Trek pinball owners.

This product originally started as an embellishment for the Data East Star Trek machines to go on top of the "Red Alert" flashers:
Condition: Red (Alert)Condition: Red (Alert)
This Data East kit comes with 4 "Red Alert" Decals for 7.49USD w/ free shipping if ordered alone:
Data East (example install)Data East (example install)
Data East (incandescent flasher bulb)Data East (incandescent flasher bulb)

I then realized the kits could be expanded to both the Williams Star Trek: The Next Generation and the Stern Star Trek. Both of these games are currently still packed up from TPF'2018 (yeap, it's been way too long) so I can't take installed pictures.
On the STNG; the kit only comes with a single Red Alert decal for the beta ramp; so is considerably cheaper at 2.49USD.
On the Stern ST; the kit comes with both a Red Alert and a Yellow alert decal for the two flashers on this game and runs 4.24USD.

These are in stock now and available for immediate shipping.

I know.
I just don't have the room for any more pinball machines... and I can't convince myself to buy any of the latest title to mod. I was tempted to buy GB and Star Wars... but room, price, and quality issues have ended that.

I need to make something happen... but we'll see.

#7043 5 years ago

Pinsound isn't compatible with stern AFAIK. It would be pointless given the links posted above.

#7045 5 years ago

Other than an upgrade to a speaker kit and/or a subwoofer... I'm not aware of anything.
The Audio tracks in the ROMs are not very impressive. They may even be downmixed to mono or have a low bitrate to save space. You'd have to look at the roms in Pinball Browser to get an idea.

Given these machines use a uniform board for everything. An "add in" soundboard isn't likely given the soundboard was never a separate board in these games.

No. Blackout requires laser motor which is only on premium or le.

#7060 5 years ago

Thanks for the reply.

To be specific. The Pro code doesn't wiggle the appropriate transistor to turn the laser motor on. As a result; none of the blackout mods which attach to the laser motor will work properly.

Someone who had "patch ability" to the Pro code could -in-theory- toggle that transistor on a Pro... but I'm not aware of anyone whom has tried to accomplish it. Pinball Browser doesn't seem to have that level of granularity.

I've seen it both ways.
I think bally used whatever they had on hand to build games.

I'm guessing it's not centered, imparting little kentic energy into the ball. Check to make sure the launcher is square on the ball.

Those balls will magnetize. You need to get the carbon ones or some other companies balls meant to be used with games with magnets.

Exactly this.
Star Trek has a magnet.
Don't use Chromium Balls in magnet based games. N's ball are chromium based; it doesn't matter what he says... They WILL magnetize in these games.
Go back to standard carbon steel.

No.
Those popcaps are mine and are available on our site.

#7290 5 years ago

I'm surprised that worked.
On mine; the GI litterly freaks out if I put anything more than the 4smd in more than two pops.

Try flipping that Yellow undercap. It should sit flush with the sides of the popcap.
If it still doesn't work take a Dremel or drill bit to the holes on the plastic so you can move it into proper alignment.

*I* don't participate in Tournaments. I'm a casual Pinball Player... In fact I prefer to fix them rather than play them most of the time.
Therefore; *I* set my machines to 5 or 6 ball most of the time. For deep rule sets; like STNG and STLE - *I* want to play the missions and enjoy the games. I don't see this changing for me anytime soon.

Unlike some competitive players are are looking to hone skills (or keep that edge); I don't walk up to machine and credit up 4 players. 1 player and done unless I have 3 friends with me.

#7357 5 years ago
Quoted from dts:

Does the blackout mod get rid of the ramp shot GI dimming during Klingon Multiball?

I can't speak for exactly what you're asking... or for other products.
For my GI Dimmer; the product won't effect any light shows in the GI; except to dim them.
The way my product works is it basically puts a mosfet transistor at the "ground" side of the GI circuit and the drain of that transistor is then fed to the "bottom" of the GI circuit. The Gate of the mosfet is then driven with a PWM signal from the onboard microcontroller which effectively dims them.

This means that none of the light shows are changed; except that any "signals" then become PWMed to a lower brightness. IF you are talking about any controlled inserts (RGB) then my product... and AFAIK; no other "dimmers" would effect the controlled inserts on Star Trek.

If you can provide more detail or be more specific; I'll be happy to look into this further.

Marco is almost always overpriced.

#7693 4 years ago

Here's my take on Vendors for "Common" parts.
1) Pinball-Life - Large selection. Good quality. Fair prices on most things. They always seem to get my orders. Shipping is reasonable.

2) Pinball Resource ( http://www.pbresource.com ) - Awesome selection. Great Prices. Can't order "online"; requires setting up an account. After that; order parts by email (or call him) get the parts, send him a check. I *think* many vendors order parts from Steve at PBR as he knows who to get to make from original molds...but I could be VERY wrong. Very good vendor for hard to find parts for older games. Don't think he sells parts for anything "modern" unless it's a common item. Don't expect any modern currently in business manufacturer.

3) Marco - Probably has better selection that PBR … or seems to. IMHO: If the top two dont' have it. He might because he orders from many vendors. Prices are higher because he has to markup over other vendors as he buys from them. That said; I respect his selection of parts.

Not true. This started as one group to service them all... then someone started an STNG group... and then another a DEST group.
I'm not sure anyone has started a BallyST Group.
-----------------
Today I got a new garage door installed; and while moving machines (packed in PinArmor -except the ballys which don't have pinarmor which fits) - I accidentally hit my Bally ST too hard/too close and tipped it over on the head. I screamed and expected a shattered Backglass or worse. Turns out - the Pinball Gods must have been smiling on me because it managed to knock the top wood "channel" off WITHOUT shattering the Backglass.

I'll post pictures later; but right now the top wood is clamped for Gorilla Glue.

It could have been MUCH worse; I'm so glad I can fix this with some glue, paint, and wood putty.

#8035 4 years ago

Repair in progress.
Top Frame damageTop Frame damage

There was a stress fracture right above the top channel for the backglass. Rather than risk is working loose later; I decided to complete the break and glue the break together.

Clamping while the White Gorilla Glue works it magic:
Gluing top frame togetherGluing top frame together
I didn't have enough clamps; so the frame is no longer square from front to back. I'll have to come back and either CNC a new frame or do some aggressive sanding to make the front to back square. For now; I'm just going to move forward with the repair as I don't want to leave the backglass "out" and risk kicking it over.

#8039 4 years ago

After the break had the 60minutes to glue; I proceeded to reglue the top frame onto my head. A generous helping of clamps and the affore mentioned white gorilla glue:
Clamped FrameClamped Frame

I let the glue cure overnight and removed the clamps. Some bondo… a sand.. and some colormatched latex paint:
Latex paintLatex paint

And the game is put back into it's location in the garage-cade:
Repair CompleteRepair Complete

The game doesn't appear to be worse for the wear. I'm having a problem with the game not detecting the start button after a couple of games... I don't think it's related to the fall; I seem to recall something about the issue at this years TPF. I haven't even begun to debug it. I'll do that later after I get the rest of my games set back up after the garage door install.

The laser motor and laser diode both run off of the same transistor (Q22) on the CPU board.
I know this; because I designed the
GI_Dimmerand the
Laser Diode upgrades… so know they both come off of this transistor. Proof is on page Y42.

So one of few things is the problem.
1) Blown transistor (Q22).
2) Bad connections from transistor to the diode and motor. (read wiring harness)
3) a Shorted Zener diode (crappy Stern way of regulating voltage to the laser diode) which has probably blown the transistor as well. See page Y42.

Serious question as an LE owner how does your blackout mod differ from zitt blackout/dimmer mod? I’m asking so I can decide which to install.

They are radically different - not even in the same category. My more closely resembled a GI OCD than a "blackout" mod.
Kapsreiter's is relay based which only allows one on/off of three of the four GI strings. I think he has an option to do all strings or all but one but that's it. He can be specific what his product does. Feel free to chime in if I'm incorrect.

My modallows for any dimmer value between 0% and 100% on the four standard GI strings. You have two settings... one for normal mode; one for Klingon mulitball. The microcontroller on my device allows you to change either setting to any value you choose. This means not only can you dim the GI strings during multiball; but also dim them for normal mode. Each channel has a KMB setting and a "normal" setting which is activated with the laser assembly.

Additionally; my mod provides for 9 additional "auxiliary" channels for controlling other lighting mods.

http://pinball-mods.com/oscom/modifications-bolt-on-mods-star-trek-gi-dimmer-p-41.html
If you haven't programmed it; you should have the ability to set R14 for your desired brightness for KMB.
See PP13; first paragraph for the description of default functionality.

This should allow you to use the board until you figure out the programming computer.

Quoted from J85M:

Awesome thanks John I totally missed this in the instructions, I’ll check this out tomorrow and report back.

To make your mod even more expensive... if you want to fly me out first class; I'll help you customize it with my personal laptop when this pandemic is under control.

I know you wouldn't do it... just messing with you.
Thanks for the nebula recommendations guys; Appreciate it.
I want to do another Kelvin run... but honestly; I doubt I'd sell enough to make it worth it. it took forever to sell the 25 I had in stock IIRC.

Quoted from J85M:

i would love a lit base for my enterprise

You mean the stock enterprise for the LE?
or did you add a hallmark enterprise to a non-Premium/LE in a similar spot?

#8328 3 years ago
Quoted from J85M:

Don’t know how much it would cost to make up a base for it, or if there’s any interest other than me..?

Yeah... not sure myself.
Send me a picture of how you mounted it... as mine is still stock. I have an enterprise somewhere; but never did the mod.

Only if it includes a special game mode only available with the side art package.

So, We take a 150 Amazon monitor... and a 30usd raz pi... play movies to it. and this is a topper?
Does it interact with game play? Nope; I'll save you guys time... "Does Not Interact with Gameplay" from the fleabay ad.
Is it 17" or 16" ... nah; doesn't matter.

I mean; I'm TRYING real hard to be positive here... I'm clearly not the target audience; and I'm obviously missing something, right?

Sorry; the "mod" gets a downvote from me. Not even marginally tempted to buy it.

Quoted from RCA1:

Prototype backgass, nice!

Unlikely a real proto bg... probably a CPR repo.
That said; my Bally has a real set of prototype plastics that I acquired by pure accident on a TPF swap meet playfield.
The PF was shot; but the plastics were nice. I didn't even realize they were proto until I compared against my original.

Quoted from joshvandam:

Looks awesome. Wish there were a way to get the laser projector in the pro.

The pro lacks the code for turning on the laser project; else it would be easy.
Without that code; unsure how anyone would "detect" klingon multi ball to turn on said laser.

#8509 3 years ago
Quoted from hoby1:

Heres the way I am looking at it because of what I want to do. I paid 4k " very cheap" for a 1 owner HUO with pro from the original owner. The same in a premium would have cost me 6500 or 7500 for an LE taking into what I would have added is my theory

Wow. The entire list; and nearly none of my mods unless the KBOP is mine.
Regardless, enjoy your machine.

Thats tricky but .... but a switched timer relay. Could be run of an insert or any multi ball using possibly the ball trough for a certain amount of time.

There isn't a KMB insert; right?
How many people really want a "laser" running anytime there is a multiball in progress?
It's a serious question; seriously.

Quoted from Juzz:

I wouldn't sell you one anyhow. lol

LMAO... I wouldn't take one if you GAVE it to me. Well; ok - maybe it'd make a good LCD photo slide show for the home pics.

Quoted from pipes:

Yeah, they most likely won’t work together. I have the Pinbits pop bumper kit as well and I think they look really good with the stock caps.

Reminder; this is my Stern popcap kit:

which you can order here:
http://pinball-mods.com/url/sstPopcaps
This is the final batch of these popcaps. Once they are out of stock; they are retired and will not be restocked - five years is a long run.
These are anodized aluminum with custom chemical etches - they are not 3d printed plastic.

If you like the pinbits thicker plastic; I imagine the
Substitution for All Blue Matte UnderCaps
option would be a suitable alternative.

That said; there has to be something in our star trek mods that you don't have:

I used light blue on my Stern Star Trek...

#8586 3 years ago

I get that CPR wanted to match the plastics to the play field... but imho; those plastics are just too blue as is the background on the PF.
I mean if you were going to go that dark; why not just make the background black?

Is it just me; or a trick of the pictures?

#8591 3 years ago

I just don't understand when you have a light blue background that they could make it primary blue.
Originally; Ive heard them say that they account for fading... but the blue in these pictures is really not a fade problem.
I guess I'm ok with it ... but it's not idea.
I'm pretty sure I ordered an original gold PF. I just don't have any immediate need to swap it out as I did a really massive restore a massive center repaint.

Promium is coming along fantastic. Waiting for my vengeance mod, stainless speaker panel and EL paper. Also have brushed stainless T molding coming and all the hardware goes off to Powdercoat next week..... Alien Silver

Did you get some "Promium" armor or are you planning on just repowdercoating the existing stock product.
I ask because I recently acquired some Promium" armor from Pinball.Center for exactly these type of projects.

Thanks! How do I tighten a coil stop? Tighten the screws at the top of it?

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/vids-guide-to-upgradingrebuilding-flippers#post-284670

That said; Stern used some crappy coil stops during the non-vault runs of Star trek. They barely lasted 200-400 games.
If you take the coil stop out; it will probably be brass... and would need to be replaced. See the afore mentioned thread for details on that process.

Ouch. Stock Popcaps. Good thing they are about to be retired.

3 weeks later
#8696 3 years ago

that looks like the laser isn't "centered" on the hole.
Not sure a bend of the bracket is going to fix that.
Can someone take a picture from the same angle. I would; but mine is buried in some product right now.

#8700 3 years ago
Quoted from zephee:

That button depresses another button inside the mechanism that 'powers' the laser. It needs to be depressed when the motor spins in order for the laser to shine.

Quoted from J85M:

Upgraded your laser with one of zitt laser upgrades, the difference is night and day plus you can see the upgraded laser from Zitt in the day as well!

Quoted from D-Gottlieb:

The stock laser is made from a laser pointer, a cheap item, and mine started to flicker badly due to the switch malfunctioning. I went with Zitt's laser mod and it works great now.

Thanks guys.
Yes, sorry - I've had my lasers so long that
1) I didn't realize the "green" in your pictures WASNT laser light.
2) Forgot the stock laser pointer had a button.

zephee if you're in the market for an upgrade to Green or Blue; please let me know. I am planning to eventually do a Last Time Buy for Red... I just haven't made any definitive plans.
My lasers do not have a button, are more easily visible, and are bolt-on ready.

#8703 3 years ago
Quoted from darkryder:

I’d love to buy Zitt’s laser upgrade for my LE, but want red just like factory. Hopefully, the part is available again at some point.

As I have stated; I'm only going to be ordering enough to fullfill pre-order demand as I cannot be left with stock with an out-of-manufacturing pin.
So; the best thing to do is to contact me via PM to get on the "list".

#8717 3 years ago
Quoted from Scoot:

The spotlight is either loose or the metal wires on the led are not connecting to the socket tabs. It helps to push the wires on the led outward a bit before installing them into the socket.

It's also been suggested somewhere this thread to wrap the wedge base with electrical tape to make the fit more "Snug"

EDIT, all good, I found the pinball supernova video.

Why did you ask here?
