I have a mid 80s Bally machine where a standup target will only register the hit if if is brushed or hit softly. A direct quick hit does not register the hit. I replaced the target and the results. I noticed other targets are capped. I assume the cap would assist in registering a quick / direct hit on the target. Is this correct or is there something else wrong?

I put these caps on and it has not worked any different. Are these the right size? They are much smaller in actual size to the others.
Anyone else put caps on and not get a response from the switch matrix from machines of this vintage. The concept completely makes since. My local pinball repair tech shrugged it off and said he always cuts the caps when a switch went closed. He just said "that's pinball" when it came to quick hits not registering a score.
