I am having trouble with a lot of air balls when hitting the stand up target on my Ironman pinball machine. There are 4 stand up targets but only one is doing this. The air balls are occurring about 80% of the time. I am concerned something will eventually break. Is there a way to fix this behaviour?

Quoted from schudel5:

Compare it to the ones that are fine. Chances are either the target foam between the target face and back mount is missing or the back mount bracket is bent back. You want to make sure the foam is there, but more importantly, that the target is perpendicular to the playfield or slightly forward of perpendicular. You might need to bend the target to get it right.

Yes the foam is there, I am figuring that I have to bend it forward some, what is the best way to do this without breaking it?

Quoted from slochar:

Remove target from under playfield, if switch stack is screwed into the bracket, remove switch stack, 2 pairs of pliers to bent slightly. If switch stack is riveted same thing but be careful with the switch stack.
It will probably bend back over time, if there's space you can use reinforced standups instead - pinball resource sells one with a rib on it as do possibly other vendors like marcospec. It's a Capcom pinball design.
The disadvantage to beefed up targets is that instead of the bracket bending, it starts to rip out of the playfield. If you find old discussions of twilight zone's slot machine target you can see all the discussions of solutions over the years for this type of issue.
EDIT:
If the original stern brackets have a stiffening rib in them and it's stretched/separated probably best to replace the bracket vs. bending, based on the subsequent post about the swinks bracket.
