Quoted from fnord:

Since we're just throwing shit out there that hasn't been guessed before there's a ton of room for a game based on Reno 911

We tried to watch the Reno 911 movie last night, but alas, it only starts streaming on Hulu on 7/1. Great theme idea!

Quoted from spandol:

Ben, still into lasers? Funny, I have a few I needed to sell. Criterion Halloween is one in fact. I like the collectibility of them, but no longer have a player. What do you like about laserdiscs that we don’t have today?

Are they collectible? I purged most of mine a few years ago for practically nothing. I still have a few animation box sets (Tex Avery, Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Family Dog) and a few other rando movies like Ransom Directors Cut (don't think that ever came out in any other format)...but I have 3 players in various states of broken and probably won't ever watch these discs ever again lol

Quoted from yancy:

H78 or just, y'know... Halloween.

There always seems to be an abbreviation, so it's just a matter of picking something that makes sense. I do like H78, since it's the original Halloween.

WEEN!

Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse.

It's a similar stalker theme to Halloween, so perhaps a re-skin could work. And the design could be gorgeous.

H78 for the win!

In that case. Terrifier!

Reskins don't have to be thematically similar.

Are they collectible?

Probably collectible if you’re Ben Heck and can repair the player.

#5310 2 years ago

I put my Goodwill find LD player under my living room TV. It'll be a great conversation piece. Movies look pretty ass on a modern screen of course.

Also got Cliffhanger and Maltese Falcon today.

If we are going down Tobe's work, I vote for Lifeforce!

Congrats Spooky on the reveal! It's always great to see people build the things they love and share them with the world. Also, making a little bit of money is nice too.

I may have Halloween on CED..... Too bad the player isn't working very good anymore....

I have a few CED discs. Nice wall hangers. As are LDs

CED is way cool as a theory and collectable technology, but keeping them running is basically impossible. Does anyone even make the stylus for them anymore?

Laserdisc players aren't nearly as bad. I got a couple Pioneers that work, although the "play both sides without flipping" feature is janked up on one of them

#5316 2 years ago

Bit rot can kill the LD themselves over time.

#5317 2 years ago

Are they all susceptible to bit rot or is that something that results from bad manufacture or poor storage? I haven't ran unto an unplayable disc yet but also haven't messed with them much lately. The only discs I'm really concerned with are my Tom n Jerry and Tex Avery collections; fortunately TheKorn transcribed them to DVDs for me a long time ago

Never had a player but great on the wall.

Maybe next pin will be one of these.

Edmiston is a fantastic choice. A lot of his prints go for serious money. His use of shadows is really gonna pop on a playfield I feel.

As for the theme, I think it's great. Why does everyone always want campy crap for pinball themes. Halloween as a franchise blows Evil Dead/Army of Darkness out of the water. While some niche circles may feel otherwise, fact is Halloween is the biggest horror theme in town. It's fans are many including Rob Zombie himself.

I need to see the playfield before I buy though. Danesi isn't programming so gotta see it first. This will sell out quick though. For sure.

Yeah there is really no reason to keep them running. I inherited mine from my father in law who called the laser discs for years......I was very surprised when I saw them for the first time and realized what they really were!!!

Woops! Saw the death dealer and figured they were all his, thanks for the info.

No was just saying Frazetta work is lets say a lot more well known then Boris but both very similar style artist.

Just collectible to myself, didn't mean value wise or anything. Some do go for some money though. My Criterion Halloween goes for around $50 on eBay and my Star Wars box set is worth something there as well.

I was always more familiar with Vallejo, thanks to his work being on so many Conan books back in the day. Also have one of his calendars somewhere. Very talented artist.

Well, I'll subjectively disagree that Halloween is a better movie than AoD But I'd also argue they're very different approaches to the horror genre, with the latter being a horror comedy. So... I don't know, is Star Trek or Galaxy Quest the better sci-fi theme? The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly vs. Blazing Saddles for Western theme?

I agree that Halloween is a more popular movie than AoD. Objectively, however, I think it'd be hard to support a claim that Halloween is THE biggest horror theme. Just as one example, the first Scream movie had 4x the domestic box office sales compared to Halloween '78 after adjusting for inflation (the-numbers.com). Scream also outsold the 2018 Halloween remake on an inflation-adjusted basis. If someone wanted to they could probably find other data showing other horror themes outperforming Halloween.

All that said, I think OG Halloween is an awesome theme for this pin.

Because pinball is fun and humor makes it more fun. Most of the best & most beloved games have some level of humor to them.

I love that this is HORROR!!

Not comedy horror.
Not a cartoony horror.
Not cheesy campy horror.

Rob Zombie is directing a new Munsters movie. Who's ready for another Munsters pin?

#5334 2 years ago

Just reveal it already.

I think I have a copy of a Peter Gabriel LD in my basement? Passion of the Christ soundtrack era, iirc.

#5336 2 years ago

I was hoping there was going to be a gameplay video today. Any idea when that might surface?

#5337 2 years ago

Quoted from digitaldocc:

Rumor is after Spooky can reveal the second theme. It's possible they still need licensor approval on the Halloween content, too. Sounds like they're working as fast possible to reveal more info.

#5339 2 years ago

I mean. At least just throw a date out there around the timing of reveal and sales... SOMETHING....

Ya think?

Quoted from SpookyLuke:

We are dropping content as fast as we can get it approved for you guys and will continue to drop it as fast as we can!

Just chill people, it'll come.

#5342 2 years ago

Licensing is a long winded red tape affair. It'll be ready when it's ready.

#5343 2 years ago

Presumably they've been working on this since R&M was released, perhaps before - not sure I understand why they're still waiting for approvals more than a year later.

#5344 2 years ago
Quoted from jwilson:

Well it probably took several months to get a layout finalized, then they can start locking down the art, then they can start getting approvals and going through any revisions. And somewhere in there they also have to figure out all the screen and audio assets.

And that’s all at a small company that doesn’t have the organizational experience or dedicated staffers working on these tasks full time like Stern

It is what it is. They finished R&M ahead of schedule, but this game development didn’t also finish ahead of schedule.

EDIT: When I wrote this I thought I was responding to the latest comment so didn't need to quote!

Army of Darkness is not a horror movie. People only talk about it as one because it is part of a trilogy that contains a straight up horror movie (ED) and goofy one (ED2). AOD is a campy action comedy with skeletons.

Entries in movie franchises usually stay within the same general genre (even if there's a lot of execution variability), but not always.

Question: What are examples of other franchises that contain movies from different genres?

#5346 2 years ago

I always put all three ED movies in the same genre. Weird as hell campy horror. None of them are true horror imo.

Jaws almost did. The first one was a suspenseful thriller, the second one leaned much more into the screaming teen horror tropes, and the original proposal for Jaws 3 was to be a comedy (Jaws 3 - People 0). But they got cold feet and did Jaws 3D, which is certainly funny in ways it’s not supposed to be. Really bad decision in retrospect. And Jaws 4 is best not mentioned

Star Wars genres:

Science fantasy

Midichlorian science fiction

Cartoony science fantasy

Carebear muppets wilderness survival

Spaghetti Western in space

Franchise self-destruction

Erectile Disfunction movies ?! Not sure that would be a family friendly theme.
