While I enjoyed lots of individual sequences, I was underwhelmed by the sum of its parts. On paper, I felt like this was a more original story than TFA, but it was missing a lot of the heart that carried TFA past the plot holes and repetitive story beats. The only new characters I felt any real interest in were the code breaker and Rose’s sister. Rose started out slightly promising with her nerdy excitement over meeting Finn and her potentially valuable technical skills (and potential force skills) but then just turned into a mess of nothingness punctuated by puppy-dogging after Finn as he puppy-dogs after Rey as she sees if she can transform Kylo Ren through love. Also, instead of getting a build up, like on Hoth when we see the AT-ATs marching slowly to the base, we get told verbally that the Dreadnaught is a really big weapon and wouldn’t it be cool to blow one up, and same with the cannon later. The whole movie felt long and surprisingly dull given the relentless challenges that were being shown.
Oh but I wanted MOAR PORGS! That was the one great new thing in the movie.
