    Quoted from DerGoetz:

Funny that you wrote that just now.
I'm literally standing inside the entry hall of the movie theater. I'm here to see Star Wars with the family. Walked out after an hour and decided to surf Pinside instead.
The movie is bad. How did it go wrong that fast? The last one was decent to good. This one sucks.....

So you spent $10+ to go to the movies (with your family) and ended up going into the lobby because it sucked, to surf pinside and snap a disgust selfie?

    Alright.

I realize now my initial reaction to TLJ last night was solely based on my own pre-conceived expectations mainly built around Luke.
Today as I reflect on the flick, their are holes in it (as always) but I better appreciate the twists, the risks taken (for once in a long time), and ultimately the resolution for my fav character.
Like it or not, the franchise needed a refreshing kick.
    Thank goodness.

    #103 2 years ago

I think a lot may be missing the points.

The movie talks specifically about balance between dark and light.

Snoke versus Luke - both are dead. With Snoke dead, Luke had to die. I hope we get some back story at some point though.

    Kylo versus Rey.

We then have a little kid with power so my guess is the universe tries to balance the good and bad.

They did explain the tracking. I think they sad they specifically locked on to the main ship.

yeah, so my question now is why did not they just send all the other ships off in another direction and save everyone that way lol. still dumb.

even if they back story snoke, that doesnt help this movie stand on its own.

your balance theory, so where was snoke during 4,5,6 with emperor, vader, luke, obi wan, etc. ?

    #105 2 years ago

Saw it yesterday... was gonna say it was ok except for 5-6 things but the realized I was listing enough stuff that I can just say it was a super focus-grouped pandering piece of crap with a few redeeming/great scenes and moments interspersed throughout.

Apart from all the things others have already mentioned, someone in the movie refers to a blast door as a “big ass door.”

That is not Star Wars dialogue.

At least I liked Rogue One though so there may be hope for some of the spin off stuff.

I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first, kinda love/hate. I was definitely caught off guard by it... but that article helped me appreciate some of the choices that I didn't particularly like originally. I think I'll like it more the 2nd time

    #107 2 years ago

To me, Luke died because he'd used everything he had to projection-fight Kylo.

It could have been about 15 minutes shorter, but _absolutely_ better than any of the prequels.

    #108 2 years ago

the best star wars ever. loved it. different movie. hey, some of the folks taken out...unexpected right? that's good to have the surprises.

I was uncertain about how I felt the first time I watched it. After a second viewing, I loved it. You need to see this movie a second time if you felt conflicted about it.

My favorite part of The Last Jedi was at the end when Luke yells out,"Live from Tatooine, it's Saturday night!"

    #111 2 years ago
    Quoted from DaWezl:

Oh but I wanted MOAR PORGS! That was the one great new thing in the movie.

This sounds like a book for you:

I do not think they knew that until Poets hatched his plan and Laura Deen wasn't hearing him. Plus I think the empire specifically said they did something to track the main ship.

Snoke needs a back story and may not be Snoke, but another dark lord they may reference.

The thing with Snoke is no one has any idea where he came from.

Luke mastered the force and disappeared like Obi-Wan.

    Quoted from TigerLaw:

Light speed ramming was great, but question...why didn’t they just do this to destroy the Death Star in one of the prior movies that featured a Death Star? Seems like a simple solution to the Death Star problem, ram a cruiser into it at light speed.

    "That's not a moon..."

The Death Stars were the size of MOONS. Too big for that sort of stunt I imagine.

    #114 2 years ago
    Quoted from InfiniteLives:

you didnt roll your eyes at the horrible Leia flying thru space scene?

Okay, that one raised an eyebrow. But I didn't see how it was totally impossible that a force user might be able to do it.

    Quoted from InfiniteLives:

We knew as much about the emperor in 4 through 6 as we did about Snoke - he was the supreme ruler and he was evil. Didn't seem to bother anyone back then. Doesn't bother me now.

Very interesting thread, as a big Starwars fan, it's cool to see everyone's reactions, both negative and positive. Like many of you here, there were many moments I cringed and had to remind myself to give this all a chance...

Regarding Rey's parents, I think there may be more to it. Remember when she touches Anakin's Saber in episode 7, in her flashback image, she sees herself as a young girl crying while a ship is leaving, as if she were abandoned. But maybe she was left there for safety. Just like Luke was left behind as a baby to protect him and hide him. So when Ben (Kylo) tells Rey her parents were nobody, hard to believe. Seems they were somebody, as likely at least one of them was on the ship that left her behind.

I also read a few posts here about the relationships. At least the way I see it, Rey and Finn share a brotherly family friend type of love, deep but not romantic.

The fact Rey is so strong with the Force might point to a very interesting lineage. Then again, we see the recurring theme of breaking tradition all throughout the film. Seems the saga is evolving. The pragmatic, dogmatic old school Jedi way is now gone, and those strong with the force will maybe still manage to control it. The old way was that Jedi never dabble with the dark side. Now we see Rey (according to Luke) went straight to the dark side during her training. But she wasn't necessarily afraid while there. I'm interested to see how this all plays out in episode 9...

The light speed ram destroyed many First Order ships, not just the giant Dreadnaught. Maybe it takes two or three cruisers to take out the Death Star but one would clearly damage it at least. Should have at least been discussed as an option.

I don’t know, I enjoyed TLJ enough (I’m a pretty big Star Wars fan in general) but I do feel it was the weakest of all the entrees in the series. Star Wars is supposed to be a fantasy soap opera in space, it needs things like good villains and consistent mythology.

Does any one really feel like Captain Phasm was as interesting as General Grevious or Bubba Fet? Does anyone feel that there was a light saber battle in TLJ as solid as the two on one Jedi/Sith battle to close Phantom Menance? Does anyone think Snoke was as interesting as the Emporer was in the prequels? Did the land battle at the end of the movie match the intensity of the land battle to start Empire?

boba fett didn't do jack shit. he stood around in the background holding a gun in a few scenes, and then eventually went out like a chump in ROTJ. big deal.

Well that was the status quo of those movies. We we're introduced to that as the norm. His death creates a power vacuum that no one knows how snoke filled

The only reason phasam was in this movie was to sell toys

I think ultimately there was too much comedy, it felt very much like a Marvel film or Transformer film. I enjoy movies that have comedy and don’t take themselves too seriously but quick easy jokes like Luke tossing the lightsaber over his shoulder (and kind of ruining one of the best moments from TFA when he was presented the saber) hurts re-watchability. This will be the first Star Wars movie I do not go see more than once at theaters.

Star Wars should not be cheesy, this movie had several moments of somewhat cheesy scenes that were designed to get a quick laugh. I think Disney is applying their super hero movie formula to Star Wars, it doesn’t fit organically...at least this is how it seems to me.

    #122 2 years ago

I can't believe stuff like the milk scene and the porgo crying that Chewie was eating another porgo was filmed, let alone made it into the final cut.

That seems like stuff people would joke about adding in a SNL parody or something...

I want to see this again more than I wanted to see TFA again (which I just watched once and thought, eh...) just to see how much more I notice on a second viewing.

A lot of the movie seemed a bit weak, but I also appreciated that they did not feel the need to explain every little plot detail. I also appreciated how unashamedly weird they decided to go in some scenes, but still, that doesn't necessarily make for a good space opera.

The fact that the internet seems to be reacting worse to this movie than it did the prequels, AND the fact that Disney looked at this movie and thought "solid, we need this guy to write and direct the next one" just blows my mind.

Considering they have fired two other sets of directors on in progress SW movies, but thought this one was solid gold on track is troubling... how far off track were those other ones, or are the people in charge just that out of touch?

Even Rogue One needed a tonne of reshooting and the first half seemed like a mess of stuff likely due to this. If Disney manages to kill its SW cash cow before I die, I will actually be kind of impressed with that level of incompetence.

Loved all the humor. It worked a million times better than the cringeworthy attempts at slapstick in the prequels. Finally a Star Wars movie where the dialog isn’t stilted and pretentious. Maybe there’s hope for the franchise after all.

    #126 2 years ago

My god I forgot about the milk scene

    Why was that in there

    #127 2 years ago
    Quoted from TigerLaw:

I think ultimately there was too much comedy

I think you're taking it all a little too seriously.

    #128 2 years ago
    Quoted from jwilson:

I think you're taking it all a little too seriously

The dialog was great in the original trilogy, sure all of the movies have some humor, but they went for lower brow jokes on this one. Some of it worked, the Porgi trying to copy Chewies battle cry was great. The light saber over the shoulder, not so much.

Again, I’m a pretty big Star Wars fan. I did enjoy the movie, but it is not in contention for best movie this year for me ..not even in my personal top five (IT, Logan, Thor, Blade Runner, and Switch were all better movies in my view) which for a Star Wars movie is a shocking thing for me to say.

    #129 2 years ago

Imagine if the internet was around with the originals.
Space station that can destroy planets gets defeated by a single small craft by shooting in a tiny hole. And how did they get the plans. All they say is many were lost to get them. What’s the story? It’s like the movie starts up half way through with no explanation. They make another giant space station but let’s leave out the tiny hole that leads to the core and make a giant one a ship could fly through to get a point blank shot. The bad guy has some giant hologram telling him what to do and he is supposed to be all powerful but we get no back story on him and he gets killed by the guy he’s training and he doesn’t even sense it coming.
    Etc...etc.....

I’ve loved all the movies. Sure parts are terrible and parts are great but it’s a time to escape for a couple hours into another world and have fun. I’m not going to pick at it. If you start analyzing it you find the faults. Nothing made will satisfy every fan and there are tons of people that never liked Star Wars in the first place because the originals were terrible to them. If Disney didn’t buy Lucasfilm we’d probably have nothing new so keep them coming and I’ll soak them up with my wife and kids and love it every time.

As a kid I saw the original Star Wars -in the theater- more than two dozen times. I've seen all of them on opening day, including the first one. So I really like Star Wars.

You have to watch a Star Wars movie with the mindset of a ten year old. It's kind of silly to expect anything more from a lightweight fantasy franchise like this. Grab a bucket of popcorn, turn off your brain and enjoy the ride.

It's even sillier to try and map actual physics to Star Wars. There's literally nothing about the whole series that conforms to reality. But who cares? It's fun!

The bomber sequence was awesome. Who cares if bombs don't drop in space? It was epic!

I loved it when Luke threw his light saber away! It totally set the tone for the movie.

The lightspeed ram attack kicked ass! Who cares why they didn't use it before?

    Etc, etc, etc.

I laughed, I clapped, I enjoyed the hell out of it. I spent about an hour having about as much fun talking shit about it with friends too. But you know what, I'm going to go see it again.

    Quoted from Trekkie1978:

Wow, you're rough on the movie.j
I will admit, the part with Finn & Rose going to the casino planet was weak. IMO, they should've shortened that up.
As for Kylo Ren telling Rey who her parents were...I think he was just lying to her. In the original trilogy, Leia & Luke, Luke & Vader have a connection...due to being family. Kylo and Rey have a connection...I still say they are brother and sister.
The humor is kind of needed, for how dark this movie is.
As for tracking, remember, Darth Maul was able to track the ship to Tattooine in Phantom Menace.

I dont think he was rough at all. He called all the crap parts out. Unfortunately there are a lot so it seems hes being rough.
Im a huge fan of force awakens but this movie drops the ball for the whole new trilogy. I might watch the next one at cinemas but it would want to be better than this offering. Major disappointment

    #132 2 years ago
    Quoted from CrazyLevi:

If everybody hates these movies so much why do they keep seeing 'em?
Hell I'm one to talk. They haven't made a good Terminator movie in 25 years and I still go.

Nobody who sees star wars hates them. Bad assumption. I dont. But this just wasnt a good star wars movie. Average at best. Better rhan the prequels but that isnt hard. Very clear now why disney has handed the director chair straight back to abrams.
Why do posts with huge assumptions always get upvotes on this site.

    Quoted from Coz:

It was a wierd movie with some very strange plot twists, I want to really like it, but something just didn’t feel “right”

Yes. So that Johnson can get to work on the new trilogy Disney gave him to head up because they hated it so much.

It was good, but not great. The issue for me was it felt like the director wanted to start over from Episode VII. Fans have been discussing questions set up in Episode VII for two years. Despite being the longest film in the series, Episode VIII failed to provide satisfying answers to most of those questions. This film may have been received better if it wasn't the second film in a trilogy. However, it just didn't seem to fit seamlessly with the previous film.

I’m a huge original trilogy SW fan, first movie my father took me to go see! I have to say 4, 5 and 6 will always bring me back as a fan even after 1, 2 & 3 were a disaster, with the exception Darth Maul who was pretty memorable. 7 & 8, just Ok and after seeing #8 opening night, I’ve come to the conclusion that there will never be a new release that will compare close to the originals. That said, I‘m thankful Star Wars is alive today with new movies, sequel spin-offs. I mean we’re seeing a movie every year up until 2020 and it looks like we’ll see a new trilogy start up right after #9. #8 wasn’t half bad. Imagine if we had waited 3 years with no spin-off’s in between...this thread would be blowing up 10x with hate...lol.

I hope the later movies do get better. My son is too young to know SW now, but I hope when the new trilogy begins, and I take him to see his first SW movie in the theater that he will forever be a fan as I am today.

    #144 2 years ago

Do have to say, Leia flying in space back to the ship like a scene from Harry Potter or Marry Poppins was bad. That was the worst scene of the movie for me. Not sure why one of the directors, casts from the movie didn’t say to rethink the scene, and do over. 2nd worst scene...Luke squeezing milk from a Tit, downing it and then wiping his mouth as if he pounded a beer. Again, why...the significance, this scene should have been deleted.

    Quoted from InfiniteLives:

    //FLAME SUIT ON
Wow, what a bad movie. I am clearly a big fan of star wars and went to the 1 am showing when I work at 8 am.
Spoiler Alert, turn back now if you havent seen it or do not want any spoilers
From start to finish it was just bad.
I'll try to break it down chronologically
    Exhibit A:
So at the beginning the First Order tracks down the Rebels, yadda yadda yadda, then they TRACK THEM THROUGH LIGHT SPEED / HYPERSPACE
and everyone is like, wow that is impossible! but they never deavle into the details of just how that was pulled off. stupid.
    Exhibit B:
The Rey with Luke stuff was pretty blah. Just was. Nothing really came out of it.
EDIT: EXHIBIT C1: How could I forget about this one haha. When the rebel ships bridge gets blown up and Leia is floating in space, instead of freezing to death, running out of O2, or whatever would actually happen, she used the force to float back to an entrance of the ship and get back in. I was in disbelief at how bad that scene was.
    Exhibit C2:
The whole Finn and, I think Rose?, going to some Casino town to get help was not great. I feel like they only added this stuff to check off the box of weird animals and puppet aliens. Then they meet some random guy who is going to be their code breaker who betrays them and it all just seemed so forced.
    BONUS WTF MOMENT:
They try and go to Maz for help. Like why? what is her role.
    Exhibit D:
Snoke! Like What the actual F&^K. He is the Supreme Leader. He tapped into the force to get Rey and Kylo to see and talk to each other. No back story on who he is/was and how he came to power. Super powerful in the force then gets cleaved in halve without ever fighting. We see a glimpse of his power with some lightning he jams at Kylo and that is it. Like what was the point of his existence other than to be "bad guy number 1" He was super strong with the force so he had to be around during 4,5,6 days but just nothing about his back story and hes gone. LAME
    Exhibit E:
Speaking of being really strong in the force. Kylo stopped a blaster bullet in mid air in episode 7. Then in the fight with the elite guards after Snoke was killed he doesnt even use a single force push or choke or anything. You would think this kid could crush skulls with his mind. meh
    Exhibit F:
Oh, the whole "Rey, your parents come from nothing, just a bunch of junk finders." Way to kill another plot point.
    Exhibit G:
Well, so Force Ghost Yoda comes and visits Luke to give some advice. If they are going to use Force Ghosts and Vader came back to the Light Side as a force ghost, why wouldnt he just tell Kylo to quit being a D bag. But that is not related to this movie. What is questionable is that Yoda blows up the Jedi teachings, but alas, at the end we see Rey had taken all the old texts. Like Yoda and Luke couldnt sense that or what? Whatever.
    Exhibit H:
Why not have droid manned ships just light speed thru all the star destoryers, or heck, the death star, anything really and blow them up. slippery slope.
    Exhibit I:
The part of the movie that I thought was the best was Luke projecting himself in front of Kylo and that whole fight/exchange. Super cool to finally see some of Lukes ultimate power. Oh wait, then he died right after. lame.
Sprinkle in some bad jokes for laughs and what not. bravo. made a star wars worse than the prequels.
I probably will never watch this episode again, and for sure not going to see the next one at a midnight showing. Very disappointing
EDIT: added these things to first post so all my rage is listed here:
Addendum 1: Ending episode 7 on a cliff hanger with Rey anding Luke his lightsabre, then Luke tossing it over his shoulder for a cheap laugh in E8
Addendum 2: Showing Chewie eating those cute little critters for no reason, kinda messed up to portray a beloved character that way.
Addendum 3: Just a terrible plot device as "running out of gas" as being the big event that is causing all the turmoil.
Addendum 4:If they are just tracking the main ship, uh duh, warp to hyperspace in the other ships and stay alive and save your fleet. derrr

Totally agree with you. Also, the whole movie seems pointless. Had the main characters NOT done anything to rescue Leah's ships (going to the casino, etc), the smaller ships would have just escaped to the smaller planet ala Laura Dern's plan, and Benicio Del Toro would not have been able to inform the First Order.

Best part of the movie was the Boba Fett ship cameo joke (ala the iron).

Movie was good entertainment to me. I really enjoyed it. Would rather play pinball though. The new Star Wars code 1.00 is really good!! It will only get better!!!

Would rather watch a scene describing how rough sand is than watch Leia in space. This movie was ridiculous and I think the people who say this is the best star wars movie ever should share whatever they are on.

    Quoted from pezpunk:

boba fett didn't do jack shit. he stood around in the background holding a gun in a few scenes, and then eventually went out like a chump in ROTJ. big deal.

He didn't even have ONE line of dialog in RotJ!

I can't wait for the fan edit that cuts about 30 minutes of unnecessary garbage out and makes it a better movie. The forced comedy was awkward, cringeworthy and needs to go. There was no need for leia to not die in space, she woke up and blew down the door to stun Poe. Then got the golden fuzzy dice from Luke and said, don't look at me, follow him. All of those scenes could be cut from the story and seeing Leia frozen in space only to die after Kylo changed his mind, by his own wingman no less, would have been a good end befitting the late Fisher.

I saw the same forced comedy that didn't feel natural in the second GOTG and it was the one thing that if it had been done better, would have easily stood up to the first.

Overall I feel like I did when I left after watching Kingdom of the Crystal Skull; disappointed that another great legacy and childhood memory was cheapened and made a little less special just for some lousy gags, one liners, and pandering to the young and immature base mentalities.

I personally don’t think the humour was what wrecked the movie for me. It was unnecessary at times but if it was a good movie it wouldn’t have been an issue at all. Unfortunately the disgraceful plot choices, poor 2nd act and overall disjointed and out of place storytelling is what blew the movie. Nothing made sense or connected and when something did connect it was like so what? Heh? Or... well that was a dumb decision!

The feel of this movie was totally off. A lot of reviewers who like it are saying that Ryan Johnson took risks and made some different decisions. I’m going to call it now and say they were simply bad decisions not different. He dropped the ball pure and simple.

The only redeeming or memorable part of this movie was Kylo Ren. Adam Drivers character is a compelling villian and he plays it perfectly. Pitty about the rest.
