    Quoted from bigehrl:

everyone, it's just a movie!! an excuse to get out of the house and eat popcorn. it's designed to make you escape from real life, not compare it to it.
anyway, i thought it was fun.

like the, its just a pinball machine saying

Saw it yesterday at 7pm by myself since we have Moviepass cards but my wife didn't want to go. I'll see it again with her so she can see it. It was ok and a LOT of scenes would be better written by smart fans. But whatever, the Star Wars we loved died with ROTJ, but it's still Star Wars so I'll keep watching them even though they are inferior to the originals. Still enjoyable to watch. I might even see it 3 times in the theater, but only because of Moviepass and I'm not spending any money.

I also had read all the spoilers on the Starwarsleaks Reddit, so I knew everything of the plot going into it.

    I found this funny

    Quoted from InfiniteLives:

Did you find yourself not liking anything in particular, or pretty much on board with the whole movie?

Oh, yeah. There were a few things that I didn't like, or wish had been handled differently (or simply left out entirely), but overall, I thought the movie was great.

When it comes to trusting reviews, I tend to agree more with Rotten Tomatoes/Metacritic than audience scores. For example, Daddy's Home 2 has a higher audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes than The Last Jedi. I had to see Daddy's Home 2 during a work outing last week, and I can assure you that The Last Jedi is a muuuuuuuch better movie (by comparison, the critic RT rating for DH2 is 18%, while TLJ is rocking a 93%).

Hopefully we'll get ghost Luke in episode 9. I don't look at it like Luke died really. I look at it as he saved the rebels and it was his time to rest. Just like Yoda had trained Luke and then it was his time to rest. Of course Yoda was like 400 years old and Luke lived to like his mid 50's, lol. He was all forced out.

Take Obi-wan. Those of us that were alive before the prequels were introduced to Obi-wan in ep 4 and an hour later he's dead. We didn't know much about him and weren't invested in him so it wasn't a big loss. But If you watch the movies in order starting with episode 1, its different. You are attached to Obi-wan and in ep 4 he meets his demise. There is more weight with his death. Same with Luke. Watching the movies in order of 1-8...he has a life cycle of about 4 episodes, just like Obi-wan.

After ep 9, we will have a trilogy of trilogies and Luke's existence is in the middle. It's more than just about him now. There are others that come and go and only R2 and 3po will probably be in all of the episodes.

    #59 6 years ago

It was ok. Still not as good as the Original Trilogy. I may have liked the last one better.
The scene with Luke being the projection was great.
End where he just disappears was lame.
The original three, even with lesser special effects were better written.

    #60 6 years ago
    Quoted from DCFAN:

What relationship? Does Finn want Rose, Rey, or Poe. It is not exactly clear but I would guess Rey, but actors have been hinting at Poe.
Also, the original trilogy had at least one relationship and that added to the plot and made the film more than just another macho war movie.

This is true. But that whole feelings for each other in the original spanned the 3 movies. This was Rose risking her life for Finn after just meeting him and then kissing and what not. It's not necessary. The writers want you to be invested in them and it's forced and not there. I don't care. It was a fun movie. But it was just weak.

    Quoted from InfiniteLives:

Also, why even have the scene where Chewie, a beloved character, is eating one of the cute little critters. like wtf. people laughed, i cringed

That was my favorite part of the movie!

Not my favorite Star Wars movie on the whole. The fast travel stuff (getting all the way across the galaxy in just hours) is a bit much for me.

Also, I think the Republic being totally destroyed and the first order just being in full control is silly. The republic was tens of thousands of worlds. Blowing up a handful of planets in one system in the last movie destroyed the republic entirely? What happened? The scale of the battles makes no sense.

Many people don’t like the prequels, but the war felt like a war and not just a skirmish.

    #62 6 years ago

Just got home from seeing it. Really enjoyed it. No hate here.

    #64 6 years ago

I thought it was ok. On par with the last one.

I don't think there's been a really good SW movie since Jedi. I love all of the original three.

This one, the pacing was rough, it was way too long. Most of the jokes were even worse than the jokes from the original trilogy I think they could do without that stuff.

There was some interesting stuff, I loved the scenes with Kylo and Rey.

What it really boils down to me is fatigue. I'm just kinda sick of all this shit - the light sabers, the droids, the cute animals, the space battles, the walkers, the lame jokes, the space casino/bars, the tie fighters, the force etc. etc. etc. - we've seen it all a million times at this point so regardless of whatever plot twists they try to pull, there's never gonna be anything new. I'm sick of it and so are you, even if you can't admit it.

Back to this one - I'd give it 3/5 based on star wars standards, with the original 3 all getting 5s. Decent, some good stuff, too long and really uneven.

    Quoted from RyThom:

They would have had to reshoot the whole back third of the movie to kill off Leia. I have no idea how they're going to figure that out in Episode 9 (they said no CGI replacement) so we'll see.

They got three options - 1) kill her off between movies, 2) recast the role, or 3) CGI fudge her for few minutes here and there and send her out in a blaze of glory.

My money is on 3, with 1 a close 2nd. I would have no problem with them recasting her but I Don't think they have the balls to do it.

Sex & the city in space....

    #66 6 years ago

Did not like it. On par with the prequels, but hated those. Really enjoyed TFA, but this one had bad story, bad pacing, and doesn't feel like star wars. I saw it with my 12 year old son and when it was over, he was like,"meh." I am taking my wife and daughter Sunday and for the first time I am not looking forward to seeing a Star Wars film.
Oh, and I hate the animal cruelty story/subplot/PSA that they threw in there. And the whole, "All guys are the bad guys" message from the code breaker/arms dealer. Plus the "she comes from nobody from nowhere" crap after literally the whole movie is building up to the who are your parents reveal. So much college campus granola protestor crap sprinkled throughout this movie.
And Luke just up and dies? After finally being a badass and saying, "see ya around, kid". No, he apparently won't. And Snoke, badass...umm nope...dead in 5 minutes. Who is he...doesn't matter. The whole thing was so bad except the fight with the red guards. But after it was over...back to crap.
Oh and amazing leadership on both sides. Rebel leader not telling anyone her plan so that she lets a mutiny happen. Plus the whole crappy, pointless Finn and Rose side mission was an unnecessary risk that eventually led to the near destruction of the Rebels. JUST FRIGGIN SHARE YOUR PLAN! And Kylo Ren/First Order plan of sending EVERY Tie fighter after the Falcon leaving your big weapon vulnerable. Just dumb. Ugh, like watching a prequel all over. Felt like a prequel with the stupid dialogue and bad CGI. I mean the riding through the casino was just as bad as the end of the clone wars.
    So, yeah, it sucked.

    #67 6 years ago

The movie tries too hard to be 'unpredictable' with so many plot twists. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, but some aspects of it like the slow space chase took up too much time. Leia in space was really, really bad though. The rebel ship hyperspacing through the imperial ship was cool though.

At one point..I thought I was watching Episode one again...

That being the worst one IMHO....

What a weak ass way to let Luke go..
The Leia through space thing... WTF is right.
Luke really reminded me of Frank from Shameless..
They could have kept Capt. Fantasma around like a new Boba Fett and built up this character..nope she's dead
I'm sorry ..Is there a romance going on between Rose and Finn? When did that happen? Sappyyyyy
How the hell is the Millennium Falcon still running?
So this is the end... I mean we have nuclear submarines here on earth that can sustain years and years being self-sufficient on nuclear power..
But the rebel star cruiser..well..It runs on AAA batteries..the same ones in your TV remote..
What was the point of the little bird things?
Uhhh..GOT people you lost your dogs on the Star Wars set. Please retrieve them...
So the whole ship is blowing up and everyone is dead but Finn and Rose.. but wait here comes BB8 to the rescue.. and "hey need a ride".
Oh look! it's Yoda again.. it's the Drunk silly Yoda ..Not the wise today master we are use to..like the one from a long time ago...yeah he's playing pranks on me.. ha ha haaa..look fire.....

This movie has definitely moved things in a different direction.. as a major star wars fan..It just is one that I want to forget.. forever.

    Disney..

    #69 6 years ago

They lost me after the original three.

    #70 6 years ago
    Quoted from Coz:

It was a wierd movie with some very strange plot twists, I want to really like it, but something just didn’t feel “right”

I know what you mean. I still liked it but overall thought it could have been better. Luke shouldn't and didn't need to die. He could have easily and should be alive in the 9th movie.

Disney has now killed off one major and beloved Star Wars character in each of these sequel films. I can understand one but now with Carrie Fisher sadly passing they will eliminate her character from the 9th film. So Disney will have essentially killed off the entire original cast in 3 films...thats dumb and frustrating.

My favorite parts of the film were Yoda and Luke scene, very cool, and Luke appearing at the end to confront Kylo.

Overall though I feel like Disney wasted the literal one opportunity to bring Luke Skywalker back in a big way. The plot with the First Order just chasing the Rebel ship at slow speeds seemed weak as well.

    #71 6 years ago

I did forget to mention one funny scene. When Luke goes out to confront Kylo he passes C3P0 and 3P0 just slowly turns his head as Luke passes him with well his usual blank stare as if he's saying "oh shit", lol.

Loved it, every minute. My favorite part was when Leia came back from space and was lying motionless on the bed. My 14 year old grandson looked at me and said "is that her real body?" Kid is too funny. You people have created a version of Star Wars in your minds that can never be made and anything would be a disappointment. Too bad too, you really missed a fun experience. Stick to your Ewoks and frozen Han bullshit, that was so much better!

    #74 6 years ago

I have never walked out of a movie. But once snoke got taken out maul style. I got up and walked out. Tfa was acceptable borderline acceptable but this was just fucking terribly done with characters you just don’t connect with or care about. Star Wars is dead to me.

    Man, tough crowd!

People bitched about episode 7 because “it was just like episode 4!!!”

This one is really different than anything that came before and now it sucks becuase it’s so unfamiliar.

I don’t know if this one was “trying too hard” but people really
Seem to be trying too hard to outsmart the movie with their clever criticism.

I don’t know. I mean...it’s jusf Star Wars! You’ll never be 11 years old again people, so it’ll never be the same.

Original trilogy is awesome. Saw episode one, once. So friggin bad compared the originals that I have had zero desire to watch any of the new shit.

That’s where I disagree it’s the underdeveloped characters & misused original characters not the taking risks with doing something new.

I know it’s sad to see the original characters “underused and killed off” but that’s life folks.

The whole POINT of these movies is to kill off the old generation of characters and replace them with new ones so this shit can continue forever. The old actors and characters are getting old and dying off...just like you!

That being said, man they can’t get rid of c3po and r2 fast enough, huh? Like, they didn’t give them ANYTHING to do this time around!

Hey don’t feel too bad about Luke. He’ll get some quality force ghost scenes in the next one I’m sure.

I saw the movie last night and enjoyed it. I was entertained and not bored throughout the 2.5 hour runtime. I thought the acting was mostly good which is the main reason Id rate it ahead of the prequels. Adam Driver is a far better actor than Hayden Christianson and I thought Mark Hamill and Daisy Ridley played their roles well. Would have liked to see more Benicio as I liked his character. You have to remember that Star Wars is designed primarily to appeal to kids so things like character development and plausibility and laws of physics and realism don't always need to apply. This isn't supposed to be "The Godfather" or anything. I enjoyed it more than most of the Marvel movies that are geared towards the same audience. If you try not to be too critical or expect the greatest movie ever I think you'll be entertained.

While I enjoyed lots of individual sequences, I was underwhelmed by the sum of its parts. On paper, I felt like this was a more original story than TFA, but it was missing a lot of the heart that carried TFA past the plot holes and repetitive story beats. The only new characters I felt any real interest in were the code breaker and Rose’s sister. Rose started out slightly promising with her nerdy excitement over meeting Finn and her potentially valuable technical skills (and potential force skills) but then just turned into a mess of nothingness punctuated by puppy-dogging after Finn as he puppy-dogs after Rey as she sees if she can transform Kylo Ren through love. Also, instead of getting a build up, like on Hoth when we see the AT-ATs marching slowly to the base, we get told verbally that the Dreadnaught is a really big weapon and wouldn’t it be cool to blow one up, and same with the cannon later. The whole movie felt long and surprisingly dull given the relentless challenges that were being shown.

Oh but I wanted MOAR PORGS! That was the one great new thing in the movie.

    #84 6 years ago

I was never really a big fan, more of a Star Trek guy (gasp!). Anyway, I tried watching Eps 4,5,6 with my son. It was painfully slow, even for me (knowing outcomes takes away suspense time and all).

The prequels didn't do much for me, but at least they were action packed.

Now the new installments; I gotta go with Levi here, I'm tired of cute puppets and EMPTY plots and character development. If this movie is the sacrificial lamb to start a new path I'd be grateful.

As to my Star Trek, I was happy with movies 1 & 2, , , 3 was utter crap. So I guess I'm in the same boat as Star Wars fans. We can't go back, and Hollywood wants money, not good stories, so old folk take a back seat!

    #85 6 years ago

I think all the nerd boys are just pissed off all their stupid fan theories didn't come true.

I am *pumped* at the way they killed off Snoke like a little bitch! I was totally surprised! Imagine being surprised in a Star Wars movie... like Vader being Luke's father!

The casino planet was an important story arc to show Poe wasn't as smart as he thought, that his decisions ended up costing most of the rebellion their lives. If he hadn't sent them off, the transports would have been fine, and the whole plan FAILED ANYWAY. Rushing in and being the hero isn't always the best solution.

Luke being tired and fed up was good too - guess what, he wasn't perfect!

Rey's parents being no one at all was the best part of all! It shows that the Force isn't a dynasty of one family, that it seeks balance on its own.

Was it a perfect movie? No, it had some abrupt tonal shifts I found off-putting, and it was about 15 minutes too long, it could have been tightened up a lot. But it was WAY WAY better than Force Awakens. Not once did I find myself rolling my eyes and saying "SERIOUSLY?!" during this one.

You all need to let go and declench.

    #86 6 years ago

Also non-CGI Yoda and light speed ramming was AWESOME.

    Quoted from jwilson:

and light speed ramming was AWESOME.

Light speed ramming was great, but question...why didn’t they just do this to destroy the Death Star in one of the prior movies that featured a Death Star? Seems like a simple solution to the Death Star problem, ram a cruiser into it at light speed.

    #88 6 years ago
    Quoted from northvibe:

I don't think they could ever make a movie that original fans would like.

I think I agree with most of your opinions of the movie and that seems to have proved this comment you made wrong.

You sound like a fan of the originals and you also sound like you liked The Last Jedi. I'm in the same boat...so that proves there are some old school Star Wars fans that DO like the newer movies.

Now I'm gonna rank the movies from shitish to shiney (in my opinion):

    Attack of the Clones
The Clone Wars (It's a canon movie. I only watched it one time so I would say it may just be more forgettable than bad)
The Phantom Menace (Many missteps here, but I still don't think it deserves the hate it got from bitter, old Star Wars fans)
    Revenge of the Sith
Return of the Jedi (I really only loved the Tatooine / Han rescue opening. Even at 13, I thought the Ewoks were a bad idea and felt a bit disappointed with the movie. Vader's redemption at the end was good though)

I would put the break here from "not so good" to "good"

The Last Jedi (a very different Star Wars movie...yet it has some very familiar parts to it)
The Force Awakens (The most "Star Warsy" Star Wars movie of all??)
    Rogue One
A New Hope (also gets an honorable mention for being the first and without it...none of them would even be here)
    The Empire Strikes Back

On a final note....if it's one thing that I LOVED from The Last Jedi it was Kylo saying Rey's parents were no one of importance. That is great in my opinion, especially after all of the speculation. I don't think she needs to be or should be, from a family that we have heard of before. I really hope that was true and it did seem to be what she also believed in her heart....so I really hope they don't back peddle on that one and try to explain she IS born of someone with force importance and he was just saying that to her.

    #89 6 years ago
    Quoted from RonSS:

The prequels didn't do much for me, but at least they were action packed

The prequels were action packed with Jedi duels and the mythology of a functioning Jedi order (revealing lots of fascinating history) with a war that seemed to be the scale of a real war (and not a skirmish). They also were generally paced well, they just suffered from some dialog challenges (particularly in the last one) and a character that bothered people (mostly in the first one).

The two on one Jedi battle at the end of Phantom Menance was far superior than any light saber duel we’ve seen in either VII or VIII, not even close frankly.

    #91 6 years ago

For those who are defending on the point that it was original, I think we all want and like original stuff. I just want GOOD original stuff. Having 3/4 of the movie spent watching the Rebels slowly running out of gas was just painful. Can't believe this was how they decided to have a B story for everyone except Rey, Ren and Luke. If you wanted to do a chase, look at Empire or even the second episode of the new Battlestar Gallactica. The cylon fleet was able to track and keep up with them like every 45 minutes. So the crew was having to calculate a new jump point constantly. The Cylon plan was to literally exhaust them because as robots, the cylons don't need rest. This was a very creative way to have a drawn out seige in space. So much better than, "fly fast that way" for 2 hours of runntime.

yeah, thats what i posted in the first post. like a serious slippery slope with that technique making everything else that ever happened pointless.

    #93 6 years ago

Here is where I'm at: Better than the prequels...worse than the originals. I gave it 6.5 to 7 rating.

    1) You can certainly drop bombs in space! The ship they are being dropped from has gravity. Therefore the bombs drop from the ship. Once they hit open space they continue on their path at the same speed until they hit something.

    2) You can survive in open space for several minutes. In fact you would die of suffocation before you would die from freezing.

    3) Leia has always been strong in the force. She's used it to some degree in every movie she's been in. Makes sense that she would be even stronger with it at this point.

Good God man, this movie was even more embarrassing than The Force Awakens. I knew as soon as they opened with the phone call trick...wow, also a lone ship taking on a star destroyer? I was just shaking my head. Only R1 was done right. This is the after effect of endless super hero movies and JJ fucking Abrams. Thanks Disney now GFYS.

I agree with most of your points. Killing Luke off after he was a badass, poor choice. Leia not dying in space, poor choice.

This movie ruined all of the questions posed by TFA. JJ Abrams knows how to HYPE movies to the max. Jury is still out on if he makes good movies or not.

There should be two types of movie ratings entertainment rating and overall movie ratings

The Last Jedi was entertaining but not a well done, good movie. Similar to Jurassic World. Entertaining but not a good movie.

Couldn’t disagree more. This was the first good Star Wars movie.

May you live long and prosper so long as you don’t multiply.

    Quoted from Astropin:

Here is where I'm at: Better than the prequels...worse than the originals. I gave it 6.5 to 7 rating.
    1) You can certainly drop bombs in space! The ship they are being dropped from has gravity. Therefore the bombs drop from the ship. Once they hit open space they continue on their path at the same speed until they hit something.
    2) You can survive in open space for several minutes. In fact you would die of suffocation before you would die from freezing.
    3) Leia has always been strong in the force. She's used it to some degree in every movie she's been in. Makes sense that she would be even stronger with it at this point.

lol, you can survive in the vacuum of space for several minutes? good luck with that. according to the google monster:

"At most, an astronaut without a suit would last about 15 seconds before losing consciousness from lack of oxygen. (That's how long it would take the body to use up the oxygen left in the blood.) Of course, on Earth, you could hold your breath for several minutes without passing out "

obviously its a sci fi movie and doesnt need to conform to actual science, but it was a bad scene, even just they way the depicted it was bad. I think it was shot poorly and her "flying" style just seemed out of place. but yeah.

everyone, it's just a movie!! an excuse to get out of the house and eat popcorn. it's designed to make you escape from real life, not compare it to it.
anyway, i thought it was fun.

It drew a lot of parallels to real life, lots of film/art ask you to compare their vision to real life. Like, the whole casino planet had the message "Look past the success of wealthy, and you'll see people being exploited/suffering." That's not fiction.

Didn't she just put a "force bubble" around her and fly back?
