Spirit of 76 A relay (resized).jpg

I have a Spirit of 76 that scores points when the ball rolls over a lit rollover, but if the rollover is unlit it will score no points. Just silence.
Any idea as to which switch stack may be the culprit?

Check 'A' ... Series relay.

Thanks.
I will check it out and clean and adjust as needed tonight.

Well we are onto something.
The A relay is gapped and working well.
The problem seems to be that when you roll over a lit rollover something is making that A relay stick on and buzz really loud. After you hit any working 100 point switch the A relay will return to normal. That is until you repeat this process over and over.

I have also noticed that when it locks on it is not scoring the 100 points that it should.
It will not release until anything else scores 100 points.

Have you checked to see if the coil on A is good? You'll need a multimeter.

The A relay should only fire while one of the 9 rollover switches is closed:

If all of those switches are opening appropriately you may have a short that's sending power the the A coil.

Also check that the A relay coil is an A-9746 and that the 1-5B relay coils are A-1119s. Series coils like the A relay are sometimes replaced incorrectly with other coils which look the same but won't work reliably.

I have not checked for correct coil but will do so.
I know it does pull in but sometimes refuses to release until something scores 100 points.
Noticed that while in this state the pops will not score either until it fixes itself by registering a score on the 100 point score reel.
Maybe some rollover switch is stuck closed but you would think it would constantly stay broken if that was the case.

I was hopeful that I had a wrong coil or a stuck or shorted switch but no luck.
Coils are correct and all switches gapped good. No shorts on the wires either.
Arrrgh, EM’s can make you crazy sometimes.

I have now noticed that when a rollover is hit that the M relay in the backbox is staying energized.

The M relay wants to see one of the 100 point score reels advance before it relaxes so that's normal if you're not scoring.

You need to sort out why the A relay is staying energized. Next time it sticks on, try gently pounding on the playfield around those rollover switches to see if that releases it.
