This oughtta be nice! 1984 Arcade in Springfield, MO has announced the start of construction of their new custom one-off machine: Spinal Tap!

Donor machine: Flash Gordon

#2 6 years ago

I would definitely play this.

#3 6 years ago

They are going to be limited in what they can do by using a FG.

#4 6 years ago

why does flash gordon always gotta be the donor?

Hello there. This is Devin, one of the guys who is working on the Spinal Tap pinball. This is my first post here and I am posting mostly just to answer any questions or whatever. It's something we are excited about.

Methos: I would agree that we would be limited if we were using the Bally MPU and other circuit boards, but we are not. We are going along a route that will give us more more flexibility in both the rules set and displays/sounds we can bring to the playing experience.

Toyotaboy: That's a cool looking ghostbusters, I didn't know that one was around. I will have to look it up. The main answer to your question is that there were 10,000 Flash Gordons built so it is fairly easy to find one in the condition that we were looking for: beyond it's value to repair back to factory spec, but not so trashed as to be entirely unusable as a building platform. Also with that many being made it doesn't feel like we are destroying history. On top of that the angles have already been figured out, which would be a pain if we were developing from scratch, and the major pieces are already in place. Toyotaboy, if you don't mind I would like to add that question to our FAQ on our web site.

My favorite theme ever. Big Bottom Multiball in the house!

#7 6 years ago

TheFamilyArcade: Flash Gordon didn't come with a multi ball. On the other hand we are *heavily* re-engineering the table, and already are planning on adding an automatic ball launcher, so it isn't impossible. We have discussed it. At the moment it doesn't look like it is in the cards but as development continues, time will tell.

Spinal Tap will live in our arcade, which is open to the public. That includes exposure to 8 year olds. Because of that it will have two modes, a "family friendly" mode that will probably NOT include references to such things as "sex farm woman" and a "full" mode that will include David St. Hubbins' reply to the famous question "Are we going to be doing Stonehenge tomorrow?" The game will switch automatically at 9pm.

There is actually SO MUCH that I want to tell about our plans for this game but it would fill paragraphs and I don't want to spoil the fun.

#8 6 years ago

Mmm I have plans to use Spinal Tap for a build( from scratch ) for a 2015 finish date. I think the theme requires more than just a rehash.... I am still pondering whether to proceed after seeing this post?

That's like when the band in it's early days called themselves The Originals but then they found out there was another band called The Originals so they named themselves The New Originals.

I think that a scratch build Spinal Tap could be an amazing thing. Just because we are working on one doesn't mean you shouldn't. We are both ambitious AND inexperienced and you know how that usually ends up.

You should include an Ian freak out mode - or some sort of album mode that goes through songs of each album.

I hadn't actually thought about an Ian Freak Out mode, but that's an interesting idea. If I steal that, I'll give you credit.

And we are going to have some musical surprises in the game.

#17 6 years ago

Don't forget about Break like the Wind or Back from the Dead - lots of great tracks from those not on the original album.

#18 6 years ago

And a Stonehenge… built to scale at 12"!

#19 6 years ago

Sounds like you will be making it quite a bit different from Flash Gordon. But there will always be someone who says it's just a re-themed FG. They won't be able to prove it though -- you can't dust for vomit!

You should have a third mode.....the "commentary" mode. Maybe add it as an easter egg.

I actually SAW Spinal Tap in concert while they were touring for the Break like the Wind album. No joke. I have a concert T shirt and a pair of earplugs that have "The world's loudest band" printed on the box as proof. So I won't be forgetting those albums.

There WILL be a Stonehenge toy on the table. You'll have to shoot between the stones... If you are familiar with a Flash Gordon table it will be where the "Wood beast" is now.

We are actually going to be re-engineering the table pretty heavily. None of the original boards will be present, and we are adding some new opto sensors to the table as well as some other modifications. Someone with a keen eye will be able to spot that it was originally a Flash, though. I am also going to keep the Flash Gordon logo somewhere on the play field, as an homage to how the game existed for 34 years.

A friend of mine (actually the guy that first showed me the movie, way back in 1984) suggested that we harvest the strobe and put a green filter on it, so that we have have a "green flash of light" when a drummer goes down.

Best of luck with the project. another poor FGordon bites the dust. At least you are starting with a great pinball layout. IMO

#24 6 years ago

I will be making a special trip to Springfield when this is complete.

#1: I dig your flying spaghetti monster.

#2: It already bit the dust. Let me put it this way: I bought a Taxi out of a warehouse where the ceiling had collapsed years before. There was water everywhere and animals living there. The glass was off the play field and the back box was open. The game had obviously been a parts donor before being abandoned. There was actual mold growing on the play field. It had one usable display, no coin mechs, and a variety of missing pieces. It took three years, but that one is on our floor right now. So please trust me when I say this Flash Gordon was dead, it was dead. I have a psychological problem with taking something that is working and intentionally breaking it. This was a perfect candidate for repurposing.

#26 6 years ago

How much would you guys like to see here in the way of progress reports? For example, the play field is about halfway depopulated now... Would pics be nice?

#27 6 years ago

The pops have to trigger 'Artie Fufkin, Polydor Records'

#28 6 years ago

Definitely needs a "greased naked woman on all fours with a dog collar" and some kind of glove toy.

#29 6 years ago

Artie Fufkin will make an appearance, in voice only. But he will be there.

Derek, I have some feedback on that but since in involves a risqué back glass I am not sure if I can post it here.

If you didn't see it, I redacted it. I am giving too much away too soon.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, you missed it!

The play field template is finished!

The play field template is now all measured and completed and ready for Marty Salsman to begin adding art to. Also the text markup is finished, showing how the game is supposed to be played. The rules set is complete and everything is ready for the art!

Keep in mind that this is not what the final table will look like, rather this is a mock up. The art you see here is just to give some reference, and the game will not be all black. The text will not be green and it will be sized, angled, curved and worked into the final art. This is just a markup version of the play field.

Obviously this doesn't include any of the plastics.

Exploding drummer multi-ball!

Dozens of people spontaneously combust each year. It's just not really widely reported.

#36 6 years ago

May be nice to do the conversation to a JM too...then you could really smell the glove.

Not the answer I was expecting for "How much more black could this be?"

#38 6 years ago

Looks great Devin, I can't wait to play it

None. None more black.

And play it you shall!

Well Eugene now has the top of the play field cleared off, and I wanted to take some artistic photos before we started cleaning it. All that dust and grime and those scratches represent a lot of enjoyment.

I was talking to Eugene yesterday about this and he said that this pinball had been pushed around from one location to another at the place we found it for 10 YEARS. It was bought by them non working and it just just left to sit.

It's sad to remove what was there, and at the same time it is going to be unique and awesome.

So I guess this is sort of pinball porn. A play field exposed. Enjoy!

Donor machine: Flash Gordon

Looks more like "Thrashed Gordon".

Great project pin to use as it's former life was clearly used up.

Looking forward to the Puppet Show.......I mean Spinal Tap.

I was going to ask who else knew what game this picture was (from their website), but then the artwork on the right gave it away pretty quickly....

Simpsons! It's art I found online. When I get a reflection of our actual table, I'll replace it with that.

We are working on a variety of emulated display types for us to choose from in the game. Here is an example video. The top is an emulated Gottlieb, the bottom an emulated Williams alphanumeric.

Obviously these aren't meant to be perfect copies. But so far they are looking really good.

I told them... Spinal Tap first and THEN the puppets.

So in the display video was "Peter Gabriel." I don't understand why you have a Spinal Tap theme but with Peter Gabriel music?

Seriously, I'm curious how you got the measurements from the Flash Gordon in terms of where the holes are, etc? Anyway you could send me the file of the original playfield? Is it CAD, PS? Thanks!

Peter Gabriel was playing on our sound system while I was doing the testing. That was recorded in the arcade... we live in the 80s there.

We got the measurements by measuring the play field and where all the holes are.

I can send you the final photoshop template, if you PM me your email address. I am told that all of the FGs are slightly different so YMMV.
