My AFMr and AS Pro sit side-by-side. While I had the hood up on both, I noticed they both use Mean Well Power Supplies with very different specs.

Stern Spike uses a RSP-500-48 (http://www.meanwell.com/webapp/product/search.aspx?prod=RSP-500) in the backbox and CGC uses a RS-150-12 (http://www.meanwell.com/productPdf.aspx?i=419) in the cabinet.

The Spike PS looks more powerful and uses an annoying fan to cool itself. The CGC PS doesn't use a fan, which I prefer (obviously).

Do you understand why Stern wouldn't use the quieter, less expensive PS? Both of these are available on Amazon.

I'm a musician & software guy...not very knowledgeable about electrical stuff, but curious nonetheless. Not a fan of the fan

Would love to hear from a pinball tech/architect what the tradeoffs between these 2 Power Supplies are...thanks!

Seems like different voltages. Spike uses their supply for the solenoids (48V, 10A) while CGC uses theirs for the boards and probably leds (12V, 12A). Curious what CGC uses for their solenoid power...

good question, any experts able to comment. Very curious about the differences.

Two photos...looks like CR110 supplies the 50V?

Those are 2 very different power supplies. The AFMr is 12V, 150W while the Stern is 48V, 500W (much more powerful).

The Stern PS powers the whole game, solenoids, flippers, lights, etc.

I have not looked into the documentation but I doubt the AFMr power supply runs the coils and flippers. It probably runs just the electronics and maybe the lights.

Looks like CGC/AFMr has a transformer in the back of the cabinet that plugs into J104. I imagine that supplies the 50V?

I don't believe Stern/Spike has a transformer, so that may explain why they have the larger Power Supply w/fan.
